West Indies suffered one of their largest defeats in a Test match when they went down to India by an innings and 141 runs in front of a huge crowd at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.
After winning the toss on the first day, West Indies folded for 150 runs all out on the opening day. Alick Athanaze top scored in the first innings with 47. Ashwin picked up 5 wickets for India.
India, in their reply, declared at 421 for 5 with Yashasvi Jaiswal top scoring with 171 runs. Captain Sharma scored 103 runs. Rahkeem Cornwall had the best bowling figures with 1 wicket for 32 runs.
In their second turn at the crease, West Indies were sent in to bat and were skittled away for 130 runs. Only debutant Alick Athanaze showed any resistance with 28 runs. Jason Holder was the last man standing at 20 not out. Indian Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 7 for 71 in the inning with Jadeja getting 2-38 wickets and Mohammed Siraj 1-16.
Captain of West Indies, Kraigg Braithwraite, said the performance of the team was disappointing as the team did not bat well in both innings.
Rohit Sharma was extremely happy with the result and said his team is looking to continue their dominance in Trinidad.
Both teams will travel to Trinidad to play the second and final test match.
India lead the series 1-0.

In short, more qualified Dominicans needed on the team.
The captain, Braithwaite, asked Dominicans for support and we didn’t disappoint, but most of the West Indies team players that was put to represent us did disappoint big time. I doubt that most of these recycled failures on that team, think they represent us. Their approach looked rather cavalier and amateurish. Braithwaite, should not be the captain anymore. He won the toss and put in India to bat when there were showers early in the morning of start of the match. West Indies scored 150 runs in less than one full days play yet India went on to score 400 plus on the same wicket. Therefore not only is the batting sub-par but our bowlers are not penetrative and effective in what they do. I strongly recommend that the ICC relegate West Indies out of world first class cricket for 5 years and evaluate them at the end of the period to see if they can be reinstated. They are pathetic, disgraceful and disrespectful to the once glorious cricket loving islands. Go to hell.
I agree with MEME.The Westindies team is not a young team.None of these guys average more than 35,except Chanderpaul who got a double century a couple years ago.Every test team except Westindies has a pair of aggressive open batsmen. Not like the chokay ones we have today.Where as in the past teams would score 270 and 290 in 90 overs, today they score well over 300,Westindies is not up there. We had people like Khanai the hurricane,Viv Richards the master blaster.Haines,Greenidge,Lloyd.We had the whispering death and the little master. We had His Logie, master of forward short leg.Today Westindies dropping all their catches like their hands full of poopoo. You doe expect to be losing for 30 years and expect people to support you. After a time you become a damn nuisance.
With all due respect the west indies captain needs to take a break because he has become accustom to losing 📉. Take him and at least two other top six batsman out and even freshen up the bowlers .new strict discipline coaching. The players are running around with big chains ⛓️ around there neck like it’s a fashion show lol.when they start winning they can wear what they want lol. West indies cricket 🏏 has become a job for the boys.we want tough competition and winners .not Flash losers. Smart winners 🏆. The Caribbean has winners everywhere but they keep picking a bunch of losers .the opposition must laugh when they see kraigg breatwaite opening the batting and still captain. Nothing personal but the young man needs to go and work on his game and give a winner 🏆 a chance please.
It was a devastating cricket match against india.. I don’t think they are quite ready to play against a team like india..
The captain said the team did not perform well with the bat…….
Talk about stating the obvious. They performed no better with the ball.
That team should be relegated to playing against teams such as Scotland, Ireland, Nepal and USA.
They need to stop embarrassing us on the international stage.
@zandoli, You know your stuff man give it to them, England has some fast bowlers west indies batsmen would not see day light with embarrassment.
West Indies cricket at the present time is not up to par with what is obtained in the top cricketing nations. Our regional competition is short, and we celebrate mediocrity. Just look at the First Class averages of the players. None stands out!
Both the batting and bowling department are struggling. For about 30 years, no improvement. Athanaze played fair enough, but very early in his career, he has to learn that once his eye is in, and he gets a good start, he should aim for a century.
I expected India to win, but i also expected the Windies to fight. They did not!!
West Indies senior men cricket team keeps on setting records for all the wrong reasons. First time not reaching the World Cup, now never have they been defeated so badly.
We can continue to fuss and denigrate the team after each abysmal performance. Solutions are what we need.
Shore up the grassroots and club cricket in every individual territory. Invest much more resources and give greater support to regional cricket academies. Create more opportunities for the youngest among us to play more cricket; to watch more cricket being played; to develop a strong love for the game.
We need to attract many more of our young, talented boys and girls to cricket before losing them to the other sporting disciplines.
Do we have to review the pitch curators because the result could be different if we prepared a pitch for our Pacers like Alzari and not for the Indian spinners. But having said that, us that the best set of batters we have today or do we have to recall Chris Gayle and Wavel Hinds….. This is very sad.
WI should have played a few practice games before the test series. The batters ought to do better, atleast in home conditions. Kudos to the locals for coming to the stadium to support a below-average team.
