The Dominica Manufacturers Association (DMA) will host a Youth Symposium on Manufacturing under the theme; “Igniting the Wheels of Production”, in an effort to stimulate interest in the youth to get involved in the numerous career opportunities the manufacturing sector presents.
The Youth Symposium 2019 will take place at the Dominica Public Service Union from 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday 26th November 2019, with three major objectives:
- To generate interest among young people in the manufacturing sector
- To stimulate economic growth and development through the recommencement of operations and/or expansion opportunities in the manufacturing sector
- To provide the youth with an opportunity for employment, management, investment or ownership of manufacturing facilities with innovative initiatives.
Invitations have been extended to the leaders of the political parties to make short presentations on their plans for the manufacturing sector specifically as it relates to youth participation, which is considered very appropriate for discussion, in view of the upcoming general elections.
Other presentations will come from existing manufacturers, young emerging manufacturers, CREAD, the Invest Dominica Authority (IDA), Financial Institutions and potential investors.
The highlight of the Youth Symposium on Manufacturing 2019 will be a pitching exercise where the young people will have the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas for manufacturing ventures and existing manufacturers will open the possibility for youth involvement and investment.
Manufacturers and service providers will also have the opportunity to display their products and services, to interact with participants in one-on-one discussions.
Since Hurricane Maria, numerous manufacturing facilities have not recommenced operations, major companies such as Bello Products are still in rubble, the Dominica Breweries Beverages (DBL), the producers of Kubuli Beer and LoubiereSpring Water, has relocated to St. Vincent and the numerous producers of coconut cheese, virgin coconut oil and other coconut-based products, have disappeared due to the absence of raw materials and the apparent abandonment of the coconut industry, since there has not been any coconut rehabilitation programme since the destruction of the coconut farms by Hurricane Maria.
The Dominica Manufacturers Association is of the expectation that new energy from the youth will ignite the wheels of the manufacturing sector to get Dominica back on the production line. Participation is open to all young persons interested in pursuing a career or investing in the manufacturing sector.
The Youth Symposium on Manufacturing 2019 on November 26th, 2019 is the beginning of the process.
