
According to the Weathernetwork, this hurricane season produced one of the most intense hurricanes to make landfall, Hurricane Melissa which devastated Jamaica.
However, the season began quietly and ended in a similar manner. With the latest start in a decade, tropical storm Andrea formed only near the end of June with long and unusual stretches in between the season.
The report described this season as an all or nothing season with uncharacteristic lulls followed by some of the most intense recorded in the Atlantic Basin.
In all there were 13 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes as compared to an average season of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes.
