Increased national security measures in government’s plans – Finance Minister

As crime in Dominica increases, the government is placing a sharp focus on the security of the general public. Finance Minister, Dr. Irving McIntyre made the disclosure while presenting the 2023-2024 National Budget on Tuesday.

“Mr. Speaker, we are placing sharp focus on the security of the people of this country,” he said. “While Dominica continues to be a safe place, there has been a notable increase in crime in the region.”

According to him, this government is implementing several measures to ensure Dominica remains a safe place for our citizens and visitors.

“We have increased the number of officers in the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force to enhance the security of our communities; Police officers are continuously being trained locally, regionally, and internationally,” he noted.

Dr. McIntyre continued, “We are strengthening community policing and have engaged a Community Police Consultant to spearhead that effort. Also, to facilitate easier communication with residents, particularly during and after disasters, every police station in Dominica is now equipped with high-frequency radio capability.”

Furthermore, he stated that surveillance at the country’s borders has been strengthened with additional scanners at the ports to detect and deter illegal imports.

He said the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force and the Customs and Excise Division will continue to collaborate with external law enforcement agencies which has proven to be very beneficial in fighting crime in the country. The minister added that we commend the Customs and Police officers for their vigilance.

Meanwhile, he said the justice system will also be strengthened.

“Mr. Speaker, as we increase our efforts to deter crime, we must correspondingly strengthen our justice system,” Dr. McIntyre said. “Therefore, during this Fiscal Year, we will focus on strengthening the Magistrate’s Court to improve its administration and overall functioning to facilitate more timely, effective, and just disposal of matters before the court.”

Moreover, he stated that as its starting point, during this Fiscal Year the government will initiate a thorough review of the administration and functioning of the Magistrate’s Court.

He explained that the objective of this review will be to ensure that appropriate processes and procedures are put in place to enable all court users to have matters in which they are involved processed, tried, and disposed of in a timely, efficient, and just manner.

“The government will also take necessary steps to ensure the availability of sufficient and appropriate administrative staffing; enhancement of recording, video, and other electronic equipment; improvements in case scheduling and case management; and, last but by no means least, redoubled efforts to attract additional legally qualified magistrates,” Dr. McIntyre stated.

Folks what does increase national security mean? Really- I am not sure I understand. It’s not too early to put Human Right Watch and Amesty International on notice- This is about to turn.
So, the more the economy gets depressed tine more civil strife results. Just one example. The more police crackdown, the more violation of civil and human rights the more abuse by the political police- this is not good you’ll- take note.

And what about those who enter the country via the back door? Skerritt said it was our way of life. If the authorities keep looking at the legal ports of entry only then the backdoor criminals will continue to have a field day. A chain is as strong
as it’s weakest link. How about replacing the ineffectual police chief under whose watch crime has skyrocketed?
Considering the unmet promises by this cabal I’m not holding my breath that anything meaningful will happen anytime soon.

Since budget start is only Irvin that is being featured on DNO. What about the others?
I see all the ladies with their fancy hats… instead of buyinc then, could the monies not he used to buy food? How is that different from buying eyelashes? Why the PM did not comment on that? If he could make such an irrelevant contribution at a Caricom meeting, why could he not do the same here in the Dominica?

Melissa should be tasked with the responsibility of national security. She has the wherewithal to curb criminal activities dramatically. These local criminals should be no match for her snipers and navy seals.

Of course, I’m being sarcastic with my recommendation. How can a criminal enterprise fix criminality? Impossible!

Irvin, can you spell Community Policing first as it pertains to Corbett and his political crew at the HQs. If you are successful, then you can attempt to define Community Policing-then we can attempt to talk. But for now, that is a non -starter – too many political hacks in this force. On what criteria are police officers selected and promoted? I will tell you- Go and tell them and tell them my Parl rep sent me. If you are not red in the force them no promotion – period. Community policing my foot.

Man stop making a mockery of yourself- let the fake doctor Skerrit continue to make a mockery and joke of himself- that is his expertise. You are a real doctor and with that it carries some authenticity and legitimacy.

Hahaha, a dictators first move is to control law enforcement, then use them to control the population. Not surprised.

If anyone believes that BS or may I say propaganda spin that Irvin presented in parliament then I have a bridge made of 24K gold across the Layou river I am selling for $1.00. Any takers? This guy is living on a whole different planet if you ask me. How can you be living in Dca and be in touch with what’s happening on the ground but have the balls to deliver a laughable speech like that? That speech writer should be fired forthwith!

First, check all the soldiers, snipers, and navy seals that Melissa was talking about. The ones we all know in the respective communities like the one they held up in Antigua recently and all the others. I see a number of the usual suspects going to the 5th floor to see their partner. Some of them is to the 6th floor they going. They are all affiliated with the DLP. They are the top dogs that are involved in the illegal firearms importation and crime.
