Today we the members of the Young Business and Professional Women (YBPW Dominica) join the international community in observing International Youth Day 2021, under the theme “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.”
According to the United Nations, this year’s theme highlights the crucial need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.
Along with this, other challenges such as climate change, healthcare, social inclusion, and conservation of biodiversity will also be addressed.
On this occasion, we recognised and celebrated the contributions, intuitiveness and potential of our youths. We also reflect on the issues and priorities highlighted by the young people as the day aims to highlight that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of youth.
With the world’s population expected to increase by 2 billion people in the next 30 years, it has been acknowledged that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.
Young people can be and should be looked at as a positive force for development. Therefore, we sound a call to all in society to assist with the advancement of our youth where possible.
Echoing the words of the General Secretary of the United Nations Mr António Guterres, let’s all play our part in guaranteeing young people a seat at the table as we build a world based on inclusive, fair, and sustainable development for all.
Though the current spike in the COVID-19 figure locally has caused us to reassess our plans for today, we the members of the YBPW pledge to continue to provide the youths of Dominica with a platform where their issues can be voiced, heard and seek to be addressed.
As we continue this fight, we challenge the youths here in Dominica to take leadership in the battle against Covid-19. Use your youthful vigour to heal a wounded global community and fight misinformation by spreading factual messages of hope in the communities.
On behalf of the executive of the YBWP and the BPW by extension, we place on record our profound gratitude to all our health professionals and everyone on the front lines of this pandemic.
We also call on the citizens to model our behaviour on their selflessness and sacrifice and play our part in reducing the spread of this virus.
You forgot to thank Skerrit for handling the pandemic so well and you should show your gratitude for his selflessness and responsible behaviour when he returned from his jolly in Venezuela. Have you ever written to your PM to question the way elections are conducted in Dominica, or asked him to explain his consistent refusal to account for CBI money, or questioned him in regards to the way his ‘social houses’ are distributed and the criteria how to receive such? I rest my case, you and your organisation clearly are satisfied with the status quo in our country.
