Kalinago Chief in U.S. Sponsored Leadership Program

Kalinago Chief, Lorenzo Sanford

Lorenzo Sanford, Chief of the Kalinago indigenous tribe in Dominica is currently in the United States participating in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

He is taking part in an exchange focused on Human and Civil Rights for Marginalized Communities from August 20 to September 10.

During the IVLP program, he and participants from several other countries such as Turkey, Ghana, Austria, and Mexico will learn best practices to prevent and address human rights violations against members of marginalized communities; discuss advocacy strategies to reform discriminatory laws and policies and to develop improved legislative protections; plan public education campaigns to promote tolerance, inclusiveness, and/or awareness of minority communities and their contribution to society; and examine interfaith dialogue and cooperation efforts in communities.

The IVLP is the Department of State’s premier professional exchange program which brings together emerging leaders in their respective professions to engage with U.S. counterparts and share best practices with program participants.

Alas it’s a pity that he couldn’t get that training from his mentor the Dr Dr, thanks America for saving the dignity and pride of our future generations.

I suspect Mr. more about his personal development than that of the Territory. Soooooooo many opportunities for indigenous people, but nothing going on for Kalinago people. But, the “chief” on tour getting training. Bravo. They are grooming him to be the parl rep soon.

The USA has done a lot for Dominica. For example the current Prime Minister of Dominica was educated in the USA on a US based scholarship.

I not even talking about the thousands of Dominicans living and working in the USA.

The USA has contributed significantly to Dominica’s development.

Cuba, Morocco, China has helped, and China in particular but are we prepared for payback time? Civil Rights/ Liberties are important. While I respect the contribution of the countries you mentioned above, they have a terrible record on Civil Rights. The USA also has a bad track record on Civil Rights but if you were given the opportunity to relocate, honestly tell us where would you relocate to: 1. China, 2. Cuba, 3. Morroco?, or 4. The United States of America (USA)?

Keep eyes open all times. I wonder if there are any so-called American Indians left to attend, after their whole empire was stolen and they were scattered on ‘reservations’ as a huge part of this genocide.

Yes Possie there are approximately 326 indian areas in the US . The largest is the 16 million acre Navajo Nation Reservation located in New Mexico and Utah ,in the US the indian community get over 20billion dollars a year which is still a drop in the bucket, they pay no taxes they do every thing with in the reservations. In alaska alone there is 5.2 Million and there a 14 states with over 100.000 thousand they as powerful as ever . Every reservation have there own chief, but when they get together they move mountains. No government can control there going and coming as long it’s within the Law of the state, but they have there own Laws on the reservation . They can handle their business, not like in Dominica where these guys, come up to the Kalinago Territory lie to the people , give them rum and cigarette and think thats what they deserve. Young man stand for your people demand what you want for them, plenty more northing less, you have that power…

And can you explain why the first so-called American Indian at the Dept of Interior broke down and cried just reading of the treatment of her people, the orphanages of misery to scatter them in order to make stealing their empire easier. All while you watch cowboys in their movies shoot & kill those so-called Indians by the thousands and you rooted for the cowboys. But, the Indians were YOU!

“Lets be fair, the repatriations alone from Dominicans living in the U.S is enough to answer your question.“
What if family members decide not to assist families in Dominica, you are suggesting there would be uncontrolled poverty in Dominica because the economic infrastructure would not be able to sustain them?

Tyrone, are you right, repatriations from Dominicans living in the US is a one manner which has kept the economy in Dominica afloat and many Dominicans alive, but has the US engaged in any direct activity that would positively affect Dominica’s economy?

How many Cuban trained Dominican doctors are in Dominica, as opposed to the number of those trained in the US?

“This result is debt stricken impoverished “developing nations…..”
Please Tyrone, Google the US debt to China, then you may want to modify the statement above.

“They have afforded our diaspora the opportunity to work!!”
Working in Dominica would be much better, don’t you think that would be…

Young man is nice you got the trip to the US ,when you have to sat and listen to history of you people you will think differently . In the US great history of the Indians that why they don’t take nonsence from there oppressors, they pay no taxes they stand up and demand what they want especially their land . In Dominica the Laba rite come around and fool your people year in year out , especially during election . Now you will learn for yourself where they a taking advantage of your people . Young man when you get back home call your people together and tell them enough is enough and don’t let them divide your people stand as one, like the indians in the US . Please don’t let that trip fool you ,set they setting you up they have their own adgender, look out is coming.

I have read a lot of possitive comments of this subject. As a Dominican-Amrrican I can say more Dominicans living in the USA have FAILED,than Doninicans living in Dominica. It is all about believing the grass is greener on the other side.A large number of Dominicans send barrels to Dominica, not because they can afford to.But because of FOODSTAMPS ,given free by the state, and clothes given free by the church.A lot of Dominicans would be better of living in Dominica.Lin Clown would never be able to build a house in the USA,,but have built a beautiful and very comfortable one in Dominica.

Someone should verify this guy’s academic background. They should also listen to him talk from off the cuff.

He does not have the acumen to contribute to any high level, meaningful discussion. He does not give public speeches, nor hold press conferences. He is too afraid of embarrassing himself.

The Kalinago territory and people are deprived of so many essentials as livable, paying jobs, proper houses and roads, educational, health and sporting facilities, proper Internet service, and so many more.

Instead of procuring these things to lift the standard of life for his leople, be is living high off the hog.

I only engage in constructive, intelligent conversations with intelligent people, knowledgeable people, people I can learn from, people who can learn from me. But when I have to read all your nonsense and bull dust on this forum every living day, all I can do is scorn you all and laugh off all your …. everyday. Go get some rest and get off this forum, old man.

      • August 31, 2022

What have you contributed to the Kalinago people but talk, talk and more bull dust coming from your mouth. All you do is criticize and bring down your country. Why interest myself in having any meaningful conversation with you? You call Skerrit a pathological liar and you are the incorrigible liar talking trash about your own country. The Kalinago people do not need your garbage advice. I wish they would build a special canoe to exile you from this country. Aren’t you tired of Skerrit and Melissa laughing you off on this platform?

Mr. Sanford, you still have not come back to the country, more specifically, to the people of the Kalinago territory, to give an update on the controversial missing funds that were allotted to help to develop the behindhand enclave.

Have you lost your tongue? Or, is it that you are not fluent enough to articulate on the issues affecting your locality and a visionary plan to overcome them? I believe it’s both but you could disabuse me of harbouring such notions.

We can’t even rely on the lazy, dishonest, collusive media to bring us the facts. No wonder corruption is so ubiquitous in this country. Dominica is completely immersed in CORRUPTION.

First time I see such a young Kalinago Chief……..but I don’t hear anything from him. I thought he would have been more vibrant, visible, expressive on Kalinago issues. Is like he there but he not dere. I personally think that this could have been de best moment to set a vision for Kalinago development.
I hope he not using dat as an opportunity to put a chip on his shoulder….. and his resume.

I totally agree with you dissident! There is something about Dominicans and youth. It is as if pretty and young is automatic development of a country. For example, take a look at the guy who ran against Skerro. I am not hearing the man making any formidable political statement, has he ever made a statement of substance in Parliament? Pretty cannot be the conception and requirement to be considered for leadership.

One of the ugliest men in politics in Dominica; you cannot distinguish his head from his neck: Austrie, is the one attacking Linton about pretty and ugly, but Linton himself does not get down and dirty and fight them back same thing same way.

Knowing how Dominicans think, I am confident they are considering Marcellin as a replacement for Linton, all because he is “Pretty!” Don’t you see where pretty has gotten us thus far? Unless one can demonstration the ability to lead, she or he should not be considered as a leader and be placed in any leadership capacity.

After shortly obtaining his present position, I heard him tried to pronounce about issues affecting the Kalinago people. I don’t know if he has improved but he was embarrassingly incoherent.

Anette Sanford would have done much better at advocate for the Kalinago people. But, there seems to be a new phenomenon in these times. People are now voting against their best interest. They are gravitating towards the scumbags of society.

If the program offered housing and ways to assist in educational programs in that area on teaching people how to uplift themselves, then I believe that would be a step in the right direction.

However, one must question, how many CIA agents are participating in that training. Remember the Peace Corps that was loaded with CIA agents, and Greenpeace help keep Dominica underdeveloped.

Now, Cuba gave scholarships, even China and Morrocco did the same, how many did the US give? Anything the US Government offers for free, WATCHOUT!!

I would humbly beg to differ, as we all know, nothing is given for “free”. And why stick to scholarships when we know that “friendly” govt’s are building hospitals, bridges etc in the so called “underdeveloped” nations. But again at what cost? While we cannot deny that the U.S has its faults and is nowhere near a perfect democracy, we can also argue that govt’s such as Cuba, Morocco and CHINA in particular exercise a very aggressive form of diplomacy which cause these developing countries to slide away from Democracy and into quasi or full blown dictatorships. This result is debt stricken impoverished “developing nations” that are easy to exploit, Not just by the U.S, but by these very nations you listed. Lets be fair, the repatriations alone from Dominicans living in the U.S is enough to answer your question “what the U.S GIVE to us. They have afforded our diaspora the opportunity to work!! Remember, Nothing has any worth or Value, in a place where “FREE” is the most…

I beg to differ on your comment ending with “Watch Out!”

That statement should be towards China starting with all the infrastructure coined “Dca-China Friendship”. Those who fail to call a spade by its name will eventually be cut by that spade. Go read your history book and see how South Africa moved from a simple Dutch Trading Company on the Cape with a single post (Still there today and is the oldest building in that country) to apartheid. They started with niceness, then imported their people, then grabbing land and the rest is history. Exactly what the Chinese are replicating globally and with the Cabal’s help in Dca. Soon even your house will be located on the “Dca – China Friendship Avenue”

Stop and think before you start vomiting Booul Sheet on here. Cuba my friend on the other hand is doing right since its basically tied to one thing… you must vote against the US Embargo or not cast a vote at all at the UN annually 8) 8) . Considered yourself corrected!

I did not want to be as direct as you hit him. You see, these brothers live in America and act as if they such scholars and we Dominicans are so stupid. They are so busy trying to make a living that they do not have the time to read but come to DNO and act like scholars.

If it was meant as a rebuttal for my take, then I am still agreeing with what you wrote, that we are saying the same thing, just using different approaches!
