Looking to Study Spanish Abroad?

Spanish Studies Abroad offers programs in Latin America and Spain with university-level courses. SSA’s locations for study abroad are Havana, Cuba; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Cordoba, Argentina; Seville, Spain; Alicante, Spain, and Barcelona, Spain. Coursework in Barcelona is most English-medium content. SSA also provides accommodation, student support, and exciting excursions.

Spanish Gap Year Ideas for High School Students

Gap years – taking a year between high school and university for personal growth – have grown in popularity in recent years. Gap years can be as simple as taking time off to “work in the real world” to save money. But they can also be about cool educational opportunities, epic travel experiences, or volunteering for social good.

For beginners in Spanish, spending a year with SSA at the Universidad de Alicante’s Centro Superior de Idiomas can provide you with a fun and fascinating experience on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. It also offers the skill of Spanish to use for the rest of your life. SSA provides terrific homestay families as well as hands-on activities for you in Alicante.

For students who already have an intermediate Spanish level, a gap year at our Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Seville, Spain, is another exciting option. Seville surrounds you with warmth, architectural beauty, and centuries-old culture. Students love the atmosphere and travel to see other parts of Spain, Europe, and North Africa.

Study Abroad Options for US Spanish Majors

Spanish majors from US colleges can take a wide range of courses during a semester or summer program with Spanish Studies Abroad. These classes can range from language classes to culture classes in Spanish, fully integrated content courses at universities in Spanish, or university classes taught in English.

Spanish majors can take one or two semesters (academic year) or shorter programs such as January term (focus on language classes), ¨May-mester¨or short, intensive summer term programs in June and July. With options in Spain, Argentina, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, Spanish Studies Abroad has something for every Spanish major, plus other areas such as Business, Social Sciences, and STEM.

A sample program would be to take a semester program in Seville. Spanish Studies Abroad would assign you a homestay family and provide orientation upon arrival. The first four weeks are generally intensive language study. After that, your program might consist of 1 course at Universidad de Pablo Olavide and three courses – one in Spanish language, one on the History of Spain, and another on Spanish Culture; all taught in Spanish. In the end, you could accumulate 16 credits with this type of program.

Spanish Immersion Programs for Adults

Most adults don’t do complete semesters to take a 4-week language immersion program in January. Our program with the Universidad de Alicante offers intensive Spanish study over the month, either all morning or morning and afternoon. A homestay with a local family from Spanish Studies Abroad will complete the immersion. And living on Spain’s coast is an excellent way to spend a month.

For adults with at least an intermediate proficiency level, the January term in Seville, Spain, is a second option. Just as in Alicante, students can do morning only or mornings plus an afternoon class for a more robust immersion program.

In both cases, there are Spanish language immersion programs in June and July as well. Consult more Spanish immersion options on Spanish immersion programs worldwide.

Tips for Funding your Study Abroad Program?

  • For US students, meet with your international education office on campus because many students are surprised that their student aid package can be used for a study abroad semester. Leave yourself enough time to plan to make sure you can apply the maximum amount of your aid to a program overseas.
  • Many universities have study abroad scholarships for their students. Similarly, there are national scholarships in most countries.
  • Fundraising ideas – Websites such as gofundme.com have made outreaches to friends, family, and community members much more straightforward. Keep in mind that people like to help young people achieve their goals, so think of a creative campaign. You can also reach out to local civic organizations and even your house of worship, if appropriate.
