Magistrate Sunil Scarce on Monday adjourned to July 5, the case against a 15-year-old girl in Guyana, charged with 19 counts of murder arising from last week’s fire at the dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School.
The teenager, who is also a student of the school, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when she appeared at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, via Zoom.

What does a nation do about a juvenile lacking in worldly wisdom for perpetrating such an unthinkable crime?
I mourn for the nineteen (19) children who perished in this inferno. Just the thought of what they suffered makes one shudder. But, I’m sure the culprit has serious regret as to the deep-seated agony she has caused an entire nation.
I hope after her punishment it will be possible for her to be rehabilitated and contribute some good to humanity.

In a fit of rage, this adolescent acted without weighing the enormous consequences of her action.
Our natural instinct is to pay back evil for evil. If we all were to continue to do this, and never find it in our hearts to forgive, the world would become as unlivable as a black hole in space.
