Mahaut man serving life sentence for murder freed after 21 years in prison

Augustus Dennis, an adult male from the community of Mahaut who was serving a life sentence for murder is now reunited with his family after 21 years.

On March 10, 2003, Dennis was convicted of murder for the death of Elizee Alexander also of Mahaut. Having spent 21 calendar years in jail, which is equivalent to 27 prison years, on July 28, 2023, attorney-at-law, Zena Moore Dyer filed an application of motion for resentencing.

At the hearing, the defense attorney told Justice Thomas Astaphan that in 2003, during the murder
trial of Dennis, the defense of accidental death was not presented to the jury nor was the conviction appealed. She further stated that Dennis was eligible for remission and asked the court to deem his sentence as time served.

The application was then granted and the resentencing of the court was therefore time served. Earlier that week, a 50-year-old Wesley man who was serving a life imprisonment sentence at Dominica State Prison was freed following his incarceration of over 30 years.

At the age of 18, Ike St. John was arrested and charged with the murder of Kell James of Marigot. He then spent three years on remand until his conviction on October 25, 1994. St. John was sentenced to death by hanging, however, then President the late Crispin Sorhaindo commuted his death sentence to a term of life imprisonment.

Having spent 32 years in jail, on July 24, 2023, attorney-at-law, Zena Moore Dyer filed an application of motion for resentencing. At the hearing, the defense attorney told Justice Thomas Astaphan that St. John was eligible for remission 10 years ago.

Consequently, Justice Astaphan in resentencing, sentenced St. John to time served.

If your are convicted of murder by a jury of your peers, you should forfeit your life or rot in prison.

These two murders can go home to their family but the family of the deceased cannot get back their loved ones. Is that justice?

You, shady Lin, seem to know the background of these murderers too well for comfort. I’m curious as to the reasons.
