January 12, 2024, is the new date set for the Miss OECS pageant.

The show which was initially slated for last evening, November 1, 2023, had to be rescheduled “in light of recent unforeseen logistical circumstances” as stated by the committee.

“We understand the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the Miss OECS Pageant and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by this rescheduling,” they said.

“Rest assured that we remain committed to delivering an exceptional and unforgettable event that celebrates the talent, culture, and empowerment of young women from the OECS region,” they added in a statement.

The Miss OECS Committee extends its gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and supporters for their understanding and continued commitment to the success of the Miss OECS Pageant. Dominica’s reigning national queen, Adicia Burton, is set to represent the island in the competition. Last year, on November 5, at the Old Mill Cultural Centre, Keriann Thomas, a law enforcement officer in the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, was crowned Miss OECS 2022. She emerged victorious, outshining six other competitors from across the region and earning not only the crown but also several other awards.

This is the time of the calender year when the country celebrates its political Independence. Here we go again splashing large amounts of money and state resources on another show.

My question is simply this. There are many dirt poor families in the country that are going hungry everyday. Why can’t some of the country’s finances and resources be used to bring some relief to these people’s lives of excruciating suffering and agony as we celebrate this momentous occasion?

We should put some REAL social programs in place to assist the least among us not only on special occasion but throughout the year. This can easily be done if the CBI money is distributed equitably. But, as usual with Roosevelt, it’s all about self aggrandisement.
