UPDATE: 45 candidates including 19 independents, to contest 15 seats in December 6 general election

The December 6, 2022 general election could earn a spot in Dominica’s history as the one with the most independent candidates.

At of end of nomination day yesterday, November 18, 2022, 45 candidates were duly nominated, 19 of whom were independent.

The 19 independents were nominated in 14 constituencies. These include Castle Bruce- Kelvin Cadette, Grand Bay-Henry Shillingford, Mahaut-Dunstan Maggie Peters, Marigot-Anthony Samora Charles, Morne Jaune/Riviere Cyrique- Kertney Matthew, Portsmouth-Magdalene Heather Vidal. The St. Joseph constituency recorded the highest number of nominations for independent candidates who include Tyani I Behanzin, Ferdinand Marcus Germain and Dr. Irving Pascal. Other independent candidates are: Roseau Central-Karshma Richards, Roseau North- Sherman Hartford Boston and Tyrone Fred Nicholas, Roseau South – Davidson Julien and Wayne Norde, Salisbury – Jesma Paul, Salybia – Vincia Massala Casey and Muta Justine Laville Matthew, Soufriere-Tahira Blanchard and Wesley – Clint Rolle.

In six constituencies, the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidates were the sole nominates hence they were duly elected. Consequently, come election day —December 6, 2022— voting will only take place in the 15 remaining constituencies.

Those elected unopposed are Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who was nominated in the Vieille Case constituency along with newcomers Lakeyia Joseph – Paix Bouche, Roland Royer – Cottage, Daren Pinard – Colihaut, Jullan Defoe – Petite  Savanne and returning MP for the Roseau Valley constituency, Dr. Irvin McIntyre.

The other constituencies where the DLP will seek election are Castle Bruce- Octavia Alfred, Grand Bay- Dr. Vince Henderson, La Plaine- Dr. Cassandra Williams, Mahaut-Cassani C Laville, Marigot-Gregory Riviere, Morne Jaune/Riviere Cyrique- Gretta Roberts, Portsmouth- Fenella Wenham, Roseau Central- Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, Roseau North- Miriam Blanchard, Roseau South-Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, Salisbury- Lynsia Frank, Salybia- Cozier Frederick, St. Joseph-Darron Lloyd, Soufriere-Denise Charles and Wesley-Fidel Grant.

Team Unity Dominica (TUD) is the only opposition party to contest the upcoming election with five candidates. Three of Dominica’s opposition parties, including the United Workers party (UWP), the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) and the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP – its leader Tahira Blanchard is contesting as an independent candidate), have announced that they will not be contesting the elections, due to the absence of the long-awaited electoral reform.

The Team Unity candidates include Carlos Charles who will be contesting in the Marigot constituency, Ian Rolle – St. Joseph, Jason Jno. Baptiste- Roseau Central, Jason Fontaine – LaPlaine and Lyndon Peters – Grand Bay constituency.

Photos of the 19 candidates are posted below as well as the full list of all 45 candidates as released by the Electoral Office. Missing from the photos is Tyrone Nicholas.

Skerrit did not buy the country,he built the country after Maria, and that is what the majority of Dominicans know. While Skerrit was in the US in June 2022,UWP said he couldn’t go there. They spent 3 years talking about election reform, stolen election and $4.5 billion missing. They spent 3 years listening to a white convicted money laundering and jailbird, and a handful of American- Dominican prodigal sons.I have never heard UWP or Irvin Andre mention the 2019 observer report, where it said the election was free and fair, reflected the will of the PEOPLE according to LAW.They saw the power of the people on Saturday 19 November 2022

I thought Tyani would have gone up in Wesley where he spends quite a lot of time. Though Wesley people like rich oratory, they are a proud group and would always support sons of the area rather than transplanted folk. Tyani from what I have observed you are reducing the peoples respect for you and you now appear as a confusion causing troublemaker.

It is true IP lives in St Joe but he is a Marigot man and all in Marigot know his root. It would seem more sensible for him to have run in Marigot. Lennox is on his way out of politics, he would be the next prince of the soil to wear that mantle. Marigot folks are a proud people who would never turn against its sons.

Well well well. We are missing a few more candidates such as Paros, Rasters, Haitians, Venezuelans, Cubans, Iranians, Turban Dubai and Chinese. This would be a nice mix of candidates to represent their country.

Marigot voted Lennox because they thought he would be PM.In Roseau North,Danny lost more than 100 votes in 2019.St.Joseph and Mahaut are DLP strongholds.St.Joseph 5 of 5 and Mahaut 4 of 5 with a better candidate now.DLP has won the last 5 elections in 10 constituencies. The main opposition UWP is not taking part.4 of the 10 new candidates have won their seats uncontested. The only chance UWP has is Salisbury.

Yes Roosevelt Skerrit is an autocratic dictator. But boy does he look like a political tactician.

UWP is in pure disarray. In the midst of trying to mobilize popular support against the elections we see: contradicting/confusing strategies, resignation from party by former deputy leader, accusations from a leadership contender of being undermined by a faction of the party. It’s just messy at the worst time.

When we do not offer the people pf Dominica a viable promising alternative, Roosevelt Skerrit will continue to be appealing to the citizens of Dominica. Even after almost 20
    years. Sad😔.

Wow. Using the word Dictator and then using diatribes to castigate others you on their own free will decided to participate in an election. Tells me you don’t understand the meaning of dictatorship. Sadly, you naysayers are filled with ignorance and hatred. Trying to persuade and abusing others for their personal choice is dictating to them. Just maybe the pot is calling the other one black. Insanity and ignorance breeds morons.

Woe to Skerrit and those 20 other hungry, greedy, hypocrites and traitors that joined that wicked and heartless son of a gone to further assist him in the destruction of our country. May God’s wrath be on all you wicked soul from the youngest to the oldest. Wicked sons and daughters of hell

It’s turned into a free for all to gain favour with the dictator, be appointed Senator and subsequently get hold of some of the endless money that is controlled by him but actually belongs to the citizens of Dominica. People stop entertain and vote for these greedy gangsters. Boycott this shameless charade. Whoever goes to vote puts another nail in Ma Dominique’s coffin.

When he dangled the carrot infront Lennox last elections what did you say? Instead of kicking LL out as leader immediately his gross mistake, you kept him in still. It’s his disgusting decision to suddenly resign in disgrace which prompted Skerrit to call early elections.
Ultra UWP supporters fail to see Lennox as the cause of these problems. Skerrit been playing him like a fool, but they believe Skerrit is afraid or fearful of him. It’s like they live in an alternate reality. This election would have never taken place if Lennox hadn’t contested in 2019, and if he hadn’t suddenly resigned in October giving Skerrit the opportune time. Had he resigned in January-May I’m certain Skerrit would not have called snap elections. We know skerrit likes December elections, it’s a trend, common knowledge.
Also, why did Lennox sabotage the UWP in resigning, and still want to be involved in it, he even wanted to stay as Opposition leader so he could keep his salary.

Boy you people something else. You say you want democracy. A whole host of people decide to put up a fight instead of just sitting around and complaining about reform that you know you will never get and you making allegations of corruption. How about you put up yourself or some other candidate that you trust? What you all going to do when the DLP sweep on Dec 6? Cry and protest? Burn stuff? get more people locked up for emotional outburst that turn violent? Sit around and complain?

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Majority of people in Dominica don’t understand how the political process works, and that includes opposition supporters. Sad thing is the prime minister understands that well and is taking full advantage of all the ignorance and lack of intelligence and strategy on the other side.

A lot of these so called independent candidates I believe are sponsored by Satan himself, in constituencies where he doesn’t want his own ministers.
First I wonder why Alex BruNO did not run in Calibishie his home village, where a 23 year old went uncontested. So I see Skerrit there.
Soufriere where Tashira decides to challenge Denise Charles. Could it be Melissa does not like the competition from Ms Charles and demanded that she be fired but PM kept her so Melissa sent up Tashira to see if she won’t defeat her?
Roseau South. No doubt Skerrit doesn’t want Chakira so sending Wayne Norde and offer him AG is no brainer. So to take more labor votes from Chakira to ensure Wayne wins Skerrit sent Davidson.
In St Joseph Skerrit and Alex Bruno sent up Clivian , Tyani and Ferdinand to take UWP votes from Dr IP.
In Roseau Central Skerrit and Alex sent Jason Jno.Baptiste to take UWP votes and ensure Melissa
In Marigot Skerrit and Alex sent the 2 Charles to get rid of Gregory Rivière

Forty-five (45) candidates of ill-repute. Most can’t even manage a rum bar in a sleepy rural community. With candidates like these, the country will be dragged to the deepest depth of the abyss, if that is even possible.

An independent will most likely win in Salisbury and Marigot since these constituencies are very anti Skerrit. Roseau North too as the out-going Parl. Rep. is almost unbeatable there. And a strong possibility is St. Joe. I know the UWP has asked its supporters to stay away from the polls, but I believe many will buck that call in order to cast a protest vote.

Hey maybe we might end up with a government with Irving Pascal as Prime Minister.

Glad someone else sees the strategy of IP. Really hope this starts a trend. Political parties divide more than they rule. It’s high time to put all colors to bed and give the Dominican public the reins. Vote each candidate in on his/her merits, evaluate achievements, and then fire the non-performers come election day. Much easier for the electorate to fire lone wolves than eject an entire party. Job #1 for such a government, hold a referendum on selecting a FIXED election day. Enough games. Our country is 44 years old – infancy is over. Time for some serious adulting.
