Death and/or injury should not regularly be the outcome of a collision if drivers all exercised due care and caution! It seems like it is ingrained in our psyche to be self- destructive and not to have anything good. When an opportunity comes to improve and advance we become critical. We fight among ourselves like peasants and instead of having constructive and meaningful discussions we give each other “mepwi” always on a personal level. Are we lacking in education perhaps. Here we see the island’s infrastructure being improved, beneficial to ALL one would think some road users would enjoy the ride but no, not us, it too good for us so lets use our new road surface to self destruct! No sense of value, appreciation or even respect of others. No awareness of safety! The whole idea of the roads is to improve our land travel experience, prolong the life of vehicles, improve your environment, raise our standards! But A-las, is it too good for us? Have we not learned from past accidents? It would seem that we were better off with the old roads, we were more restricted at least we had to slow down for a pot hole! Perhaps when the government attempts any other new project in Dominica if must be preceded with an education campaign and some sort of supporting policy to ensure the objective of the project is implemented safely for our own good. With new road surface there should be accompanying traffic controls especially on those who have the responsibility of transporting others, imposed speed limits but because we are a “pull string” culture and lawless, let’s face it, who going to challenge anybody for speeding, careless driving and drink driving????? “not I said the police cause I do it too and after all we are friends” so let’s just put each other at risk, kill off and seriously injure one another then we will make a public appeal for funds to go overseas for treatment cause guess what? We do not have the medical facility to fix our injuries. Self- destructive mentality!

These old pieces of junk like that red car should never be on the road. Mad drivers put them on the road to wreck new and up-to-date vehicles. After investigation it is never a shock to find that these outdated garbage have no insurance and liscence. Just mind my new car with all you ‘coshoni’. Get these dumps off the road!!

There is need to re educate our drivers on the safe us of these roads. I have observed about six to eight accidents on the road between the old DBMC building going north unto the entrance to Astaphan Fond Cole. It is clear that the stop reaction time have to be earlier, also the drivers must excercise better judgement regarding the speed at which they drive in these areas, those moving from the stop line into the main road have to be extra careful now, because the vehicles are coming through much faster. we all just need to double double careful now.

all drivers are educated and know how to use the road they are just too self centered and selfish thinking of themselves only.

Get Real Punk. Its not about who Built the Roads that causes accident. Most accident are caused by Drivers error having a significaant effect on his/her awareness and safety to other road users, the passenger and themselves.

An RTA (Road Traffic Accidents) can be avoided if only special measures of safety are introduced by your vehicle inspectorate in the form of the following.

    .Speed restriction.
    .Adequate signage
.Advance warning for potential accident black spots.
.Introduction of a Drivers defensive training.
. Stricter vehicle safety checks-100 point checks to be carried out by the insurance inspectorate 6 Monthly.Failure of which should invalidate their insurance
    .Traffic speed control cameras.

This is only as snippet of the actions i can recommend, there are many more, it would be my pleasure to recommend more if needed as this is what i deal with primarily in my routine job as and Accident investigator for the ABI Insurance/Police inspectorate in the UK,

Iam also a Dominican with good intensions.

We were saying the same thing. They use the roads like its a Grand Prix circuit. Lewis Hamilton better look out, he’s got competition in Dominica.

They drive with no thought for anyone else (not even themselves). Good or bad roads their mentality is still the same.

The term ‘road hog’ must have come to mind after witnessing the driving by some Dominican drivers.
I shudder to think what would happen if we had 2,3,even 4 lane motorways. The majority dont even know when/how to indicate.

The only saving grace, was that noone was seriously hurt.

There is not much more I can write about accidents and offering advice on driving cautiously. It is shocking that 3 accidents occurred in DA in a matter of a few hours or were they minutes. This saddens me. Poor people who are injured. I hope their injuries are not bad and that they are not suffering or at least, not much. May God help them. Take heart. My prayers are with you.

We do not need speed bumps damaging the roads again. Speed bumps even damage people cars. What we need is road signs/speed signs and the laws to be enforced. Dominicans need to learn the hard way can’t spoon feed them all the time. You break the law, you pay the price. We need traffic police alone the highways, giving tickets for speeding and checking for drinking and driving. Let them pay for their ignorance! If going above the speed limit pay the price. That’s money going towards the country. We need SLOW DOWN signs!!

    • Justice and Truth
      April 14, 2012

Morihei, please do not make me laugh. :) In all fairness this is one which I will defend. Drivers must drive carefully. They cannot blame anyone but themselves. One of the drivers or both were negligent.
You should know that they must drive on their side of the road and yield to the driver who has right of way. When approaching a stop sign, if there is one, they should slow down. If there is an intersection they must look carefully for other vehicles on the main road prior to turning.
Those who are driving along a side road should slow down when approaching the main road and stop, giving other drivers who are driving along the main road preference so that they do not collide with one another.
In other words, the onus is on the drivers who are driving along a side road to yield to the drivers on the main road, allowing them to pass prior to proceeding.
Dominica has many more vehicles than in previous years. Drivers should do their utmost not to try to overtake specifically on a main road. Many accidents, injuries and death occur due to this.
Why do they not adhere to road regulations, what they were taught when learning to drive and when they went for their license? Are they that absentminded that they also do not treasure their life and that of their passengers? They are not taking road safety seriously.
I hope they were not texting and also talking on their cellular while driving?

We asked these drivers to take it easy on the road but its like they have something to prove. Some drivers are senseless, selfish and stupid. They do not heed, they do not yield. I remembering yielding to another car when one driver came from behind and passed me. I was totally astound.

There is no way you can speed there… That’s near the part to go to stockfarm and the bus is in the centre road and no driver no matter how reckless would ever speed through an intersection on goodwill road. So let’s wait for the result of the investigation before we open our mouths and erase all doubt…

The area is not marked properly either. People making the turn from the main road to go up stockfarm way does come all the way into the oncoming traffic lane to stop. There should be some marking indicating where the lane for oncoming traffic starts since some people dont have good judgement.

Some don’t stop at all before crossing the lane of traffic. Is all that that should be included in the driving test. Some people act like they dont know. And i talking from experience that happen to me as a driver. Have to be very vigilant on the road them days. People not driving by the rules.

Roz… Good judgement or not… markings or not, drivers are supposed to drive defensively. Drivers simply donot like to stop at this stop line.
A while back I witnessed an accident at this same area, when a car did not stop at the stop sign, and it knocked a jeep in the process, and another vehicle was also damaged, leaving passengers hurt and had to be transported to the hospital, all because one man decided not to stop at the stop line, and YES!!!!! IT WAS MARKED…..STOP.
Drivers who drive buses are drivers of cars e.t.c. Some of them are very agressive, and when these people drive buses as a way of life, their negative attitude is always on display. Look to see who is speeding at night and on weekends, and let us start blaming the government and the police for reckless behavoir of drivers who act as if the road is theirs.

My diiar is u a driva?….. when people display their foolishness and lack of discipline, all you blaming road signs and all sorts of people for the faults of the culprits and they go free because of the blame game that is going on. I am a driver, and I see all kinds of assnees on the road everyday, and you would be suprised who braks the rules….SIGNS OR NOT…..
