Accident near Calibishie

The front of one of the buses

There was an accident near Calibishie on Monday afternoon.

It involved a school bus and a taxi bus, an alleged eyewitness told Dominica News Online.

According to the eyewitness the two buses ran into each other over a small bridge near the village.

The school bus was filled with students while the driver and a passenger being taken to the airport were in the other vehicle.

No one was injured but the eyewitness said the students were shaken up badly.

“They were crying and I had to go and hug and console them,” she said. “They are just lucky the bus did not go over the bridge.”

The school bus was involved in a another accident recently when it overturned near Calibishie.

Another accident? Fortunately no one and the children of all were not hurt. The shock of it shook them up and scared them.
It appears to be a case of negligence. One would think that after the three accidents on Friday, they would drive carefully and on their side of the road and slowly when they come to a bend.

More activity more crimes…. More vehicles more accidents…. are you totally innocent? It is up to every driver and pedestrian to do our part and cut down the number of accidents that occurs. Accidents will happen, and crimes will happen, but it is up to us to raise our children with respect, and teach them to be humble and forgiving, if we teach them to always fight they will be fighters. We are responsible for some of the crimes that are happening because we say many things in the presence of our children for years, and just because they don’t say anything, we think they don’t take notice, but it is planted in their head like a seed, and when they grow up, hm, is beff la largeyay.

That looks like the bridge over the Hodges River between Woodford Hill and Calibishie. It is the most dangerous bridge in Dominica because it has no railings, it is approached by a curve and a steep hill, and if you go over you land in the river below. Time to fix it!

    • LOL
      April 17, 2012

Calibishie People need to block the road again. Put pressure on the PM to fix this. What are we waiting for? I made that observation, and that is a major disaster waiting to happen. Let’s start the pressure now.

Yes drivers can be careful, but this bridge is a bad one. Atleast install some rails PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The minister has his job and so does the police. What is all you problem…. Stop being selfish. All you want the minister to come and follow everybody to make sure they drive safe. Commion sense is needed when you drive on the road.

Drivers up nort learn to drive on your side, and stop driving so fast in the middle of the road.
Allu thinkin the road is all own.
Stop blaming the government for everything people do wrong. If the government say to jump off a building, will you do it…. we were all born with commonsense……it beats education…STOP BEING SELFISH AND MAKING THE WORLD KNOW IT. this is the internet…. Foreigners read the column, and they will see how dumb some people are.

Now is not the time for politics, it is time to live in peace with each other, stop acting like animals, they suppoedly don’t have all the senses that we have.

Animals come together with their own, WHY CAN’T WE DO THE SAME…HMM?

:-D aright DNO ure trying to be politically correct here…WTH is an alleged eyewitness…..u people are funny

  26. April 16, 2012

We all can learn from each other and is with that in mind I wish to say to Who ever is posting the news for D.N.O. Please lets not throw the word “Alleged” this and Alleged that all over the place and out of contex. I am aware you all are trying to cover you all A???? from a law suit point taken, but do not join those who do not know when to use the word “Alleged” Just read your head line. An eye witness is a eye witness ie some one who saw something plain and simple there should not be any implications in my view is either the person saw something or did not witness anything. I always need correction my self so no hard feelings to any one, and I hope my post passes the smell test. Respect.

      April 17, 2012

The reporter is using alleged because in other words he/she is printing hearsay that has not been confirmed as yet.

      • Man in Dominica
        April 18, 2012

It’s not “hearsay” when someone tells you what they themselves saw. It’s only “hearsay” when someone tells you that something is true because of what they heard a third person said. You usually can’t rely on that because you yourself didn’t talk to that third person and so can’t judge whether they are credible.

There are two much better ways to indicate in a news story that you are relying on a source: “According to an eyewitness, the accident involved…” or “The accident reportedly involved…” If DNO doesn’t actually believe that the person was an eyewitness, then they shouldn’t bother talking with them at all!

    • anonymous
      April 17, 2012

To alleged is to declare or assert, especially without proof. The eye witness who alleged this or that, is just simply expressing his account of events seen. His or her version is yet to proven as fact. Until proven, it remains an allegation, in the court of laaaaaw.

Just happened to be passing by there today shortly after this happened. The bridge wasn’t wide enough for two vehicles to pass, as is typical for that road. The taxi was fully on the bridge when it was hit. The school bus was coming towards it, down a hill and around a bit of a curve; there were skid marks visible from where it obviously tried but failed to stop in time. I have my own conclusion from seeing that evidence…

Does anyone know, did the school bus have the same driver when it was involved in the previous accident?

    • smile
      April 17, 2012

      yes, the same driver

  29. Tiger
    April 16, 2012

Only if one had slowed down to allow the other to pass. I don’t think I have ever seen that many accidents in DA. So you see, potholes are a traffic calming device.

And all along we used to say how DA drivers were some of the best in the world? Well we all know why there were not as many accidents before – POTHOLES.

You know the bridge situation, don’t approach that bridge quickly. You’re driving that road several times are day, your driving pattern is unacceptable! Parents, don’t accept this. This could have been avoided.
