More than 30 Barbadian event promoters and brands are standing together under the common banner “Barbados Cares” in a national effort to raise much needed funds for the disaster relief and recovery efforts in the storm-ravaged island of Dominica.
According to a release from the group, this was revealed at a press conference Thursday in Bridgetown, at which Damien Sorhaindo, a member of the Dominica Association of Barbados, brought reporters up to date on the extent of the disaster with a graphic audio-visual presentation.
The group revealed that its fund-raising efforts had already been initiated with the setting up of a Royal Bank of Canada account (Account # 5306311) designated “Barbados Cares” to which members of the public can make monetary contributions.
A weekend of activities designed to raise thousands of dollars, starts on Friday, September 25 with a cooler beach party at the Copacabana Beach Bar and Grill from 8pm to 2am, continues the following day with a Cooler cruise on the Jolly Roger from 12pm to 4pm and ends on the Sunday with a fun walk/run/ride for all ages and abilities from 6am to 9am starting at the Esplanade on Bay Street and ending at the Copacabana Beach Bar and Grill.
It was also revealed that the Barbados Cares’ immediate goal is to raise enough money, by way of corporate and general public contributions, to provide Dominica with twelve 1,000-gallon water tanks costing roughly US$9,000 to help alleviate the distress in communities, especially schools, where there is still no pipe-borne water.
The Barbados Cares’ members said they were in constant communication with Disaster and Government officials on the ground in Dominica and the latter’s recommendations would determine which areas of the recovery effort would benefit from all the funds that are eventually raised.
It was also noted that the response to the appeal so far has been amazing, with corporate Barbados, the general public, government departments and suppliers already contributing or pledging their money, time, resources and services to the relief effort.

Although this is not the time to continue on your political crussde, you just might one day get your chance to run the country into the ground as you so wish. If you haven’t noticed we’re in a disaster and the B’dos group is only trying to help.
Thanks a million to Barbados and its efforts to Dominica in our time of need its not the first time that Barbados has displayed such a caring and giving attitude towards Dominica. Let us hope that others follow as well and we keep the spirit of Caribbean love and togetherness alive and well for many years to come. God bless the Government and people of Barbados and all the other Islands to include Montserrat that has responded to my homeland in its time of need.
Thank you to Barbados for caring. Thank you also to Damien Sorhaindo, Dominican Association, Barbados, for making others aware of Dominica’s sad situation. Your spirit of helpfulness and generosity for the plight of Dominicans is greatly appreciated.
By now Dominicans are aware of the numerous people especially throughout the Caribbean who promptly came to their aid. I pray and hope that all Dominicans will apply the same love, caring, sharing and friendship to their fellow people, not only at this time but throughout the years to come.
These godly gestures will make D/ca a happy, peaceful and safe place to reside and where everyone lives in harmony. I recall the words of Martin Luther King Jr: “I have a dream.”
May they never forget the gracious help which is bestowed to them from those whom they do not know and may never know. In turn, may they project this godly virtue to their fellow people, in words and actions wherever they may be.
God bless everyone.
Thanks a million for this great gesture may the Almight bless you all. Thanks to all of you.
Thank you Barbados for your much needed contribution to the recovery efforts in Dominica.
This is an excellent example of Caribbean unity and must be applauded. It is heart-warming to see the level of humanitarian solidarity and CARICOM consciousness among our sister islands. Thanks for the gesture ‘Barbados Cares’ and indeed as a Dominican, I am grateful.
DNO is Mr. Hartley Henry, part of this group? What about CADRES and Peter Wickham? I find Mr. Wickham is damn good in predicting labor party constituencies; I wonder if he was able to predict the landslides and flood of Erica or if he advised Skerrit on work that needed to be done to ensure river beds were not tampered with.
Thank you Barbados
Thanks for being there for us…….. We are grateful for whatever you can do for US!!!
