UPDATE: Hilroy Ambo is victim of Jimmit accident

Scene of accident in Jimmit.

Fifty-two-year-old Hilroy Ambo of Salisbury has been identified as the man who died in a fatal accident on the Jimmit Public Road on Saturday November 12, 2011.

Police Spokesman Kenth Matthew has said that Ambo and Joseph Lavernier of Petite Soufriere were both passengers in a pickup driven by Leroy Williams of Salisbury, when it collided with a truck in the said area. The incident occurred at about 11:50 a.m.

At the time of the accident, Williams was driving in a northerly direction while Kertiste Baptiste of Jimmit drove the dump truck, in a southerly direction. Williams and Lavernier were both injured and taken to the hospital.

To the family: May you find love, comfort and support in those around you during this difficult time. I know it is not easy, especially considering the way he died. I hope he had a chance to give his life to Christ. I am sure the driver is very sorry and at the same time will see this as a learning experience for him. Don’t judge or criticise anyone here. This is a very sad situation, one which I am sure the driver will never get over. Remember our God is one of comfort and He is in the midst of all our trials.

Now with the new road it takes me longer to drive to town . I am very scared the way people drive and I must be very carefull. Often now I have to stop to allow the driver coming from the oposite to finish overtaking.

I am deeply saddened that someone has lost a life in this accident. My heartfelt sympathy to the family.
Who is to be blamed for careless driving? DNO will keep us informed.
In Toronto, only tonight while coming in I noticed some drivers of cars will not allow pedestrians to cross the street even though they have right of way. They also squeeze their vehicles either in front of them or behind. They are always in a hurry. I certainly wished that a Police cruiser would happen to be around and notice them.
I thought I will telephone the Traffic Department again requesting that cameras be installed at that intersection. I had once done that and was told that the cameras are in certain areas of the City and from time to time they are moved to other locations. I bet there never was one at that busy, heavy traffic intersection. I had told the officer consider how much additional money the City would make if cameras were installed at that specific intersection. I heard that the City makes a lot of money at other intersections by issuing tickets which are mailed to drivers’ homes when they violate road regulations. Yet, some drivers will still disobey the Law. These lack road courtesy. Accidents, injuries and deaths have occurred in that area and other areas of the City, be it the fault of drivers or pedestrians.
On Saturday afternoon I was on my way to the store near where I reside. I saw a fellow West Indian lady standing alone, not at the area, at the lights where she was supposed to cross the street when the lights changed. I am always on the alert and pray that I will never get into an accident as I ask the Lord for protection and thank Him for keeping me safely. I went up to the lady and told her that she should not be standing there for when the lights turn and she commences walking, a vehicle could turn around the corner and will not see her and she could get hurt. I further informed her that if there is one person or more at the corner, then it could be safe for her to stand there and cross as soon as the lights change. I also told her this is what I do and so be careful. She thanked me.
Returning, I saw another fellow West Indian lady who said to me I heard what you stated to the lady and you are correct. I told her if I am able to offer good advice in anyway wherever I may be and at anytime I will do so. She said, “Praise the Lord”. This is a nice thing to do. She could get knocked down by traffic but she would have right the way. I replied, not where she was standing near a telephone pole and was not at the lights. Drivers would not have seen her when turning the corner if she tried to cross the street. I told her we are all each other’s keepers, one way or the other. I told her we are all each other’s keepers, one way or the other. However, some people cross the street without looking one way or the other. They think when the lights turn since they have right of way they can cross the street without looking to see if the traffic has stopped. The word is drivers do not look out for pedestrians.
Someone told me that a woman was crossing the street and she did a car lifted her up and threw her on the ground. God preserve me from that. I thought she was dead but was told she was badly injured and the family is getting a lawyer to sue the driver. Know that it will be an exorbitant sum of money. Pedestrians have to look out for drivers.
It all boils down to drivers be careful.
I do not walk or cross blindly. Prior to crossing, I turn around and look around and then cross. Pedestrians are told when the lights change wait for the vehicles to come to a stop. Reason being, the driver(s) brakes could give way and plow into pedestrians who are crossing the road/street. This happens occasionally at intersections and in the middle of the road at that as if it is a curse. :) It is rather embarrassing for those drivers. Traffic slows down and is held up; bad enough during rush hour. The stories are many.
Drive safely. In the case where a pedestrian may be concerned (not this time), pedestrians be careful. All of us know that a life lost cannot be regained. Those who are injured could be maimed for life. Be responsible people and look out for each other, no exception drivers.
I am unable to comprehend why drivers do not (always) obey the road regulations. It could be either their life or the life of a passenger or a pedestrian. What will it take for them to pay heed?

How silly some of you are and also to make silly comments which make no sense. Someone comments sensibly which is an advice and message for everyone, drivers and pedestrians alike and you give the person thumbs down. No problem whatsoever! I suspect what type of minds would do this. You see, the world comprises of all types of people with all types of mentality and some warped ones which are unloving. You have depicted as always that you do not want is good for you, for others and for your country and could not care less. These are the constant critics which do nobody any good. Who cares about you and your reaction?
I have much to share with you which are sensible comments. I could write a book about that and of my experience.
In my estimation, your reaction does not count and is null and void where I am concerned. I know better than you do. Eat your heart out.  I am at peace and for having written! Thanks be to God! Can you say the same?

I really don’t want to see the dead body and if it was my family in an accident, I would not want DNO blasting their mangled bodies on the website. That would not be the lasting image I would want of my mom or uncle etc. Thank you very much.

      November 14, 2011

      @ me

Always criticizing. Alway negative. I do think the pics are a good idea which give us, worldwide the extent of the damage. They may not be important to you as it depends on your mentality but they are important to others. Every one has a different mentality and what could be done and what should be done. Some of us appreciate it. TV Stations proviide this information. Why not DNO? Give this a thought.
DNO keep it up and thank you! I wish that drivers will be more careful in the future. Our duty is to preserve life; not to destroy it and to avoid accidents and injuries.

      @ Rene

Yes! It is sad that a life has been lost from this earth though an accident. The family are grieving. May God bless them and cover them with his mantle of consolation and strength. All of us have lost loved ones through whatever means and we know what it is to grieve and the pain of the passing of loved ones. I can state that it is no easy matter to bear.
If you are old enough, the words of Nat Kin Cole resonate: “Only those who have loved and lost could know how a heart can cry.” While it does not pertain to the passing of a loved one, we could attribute it to their passing as also Hilroy Ambo. We have reasons to be sad for his family.
As St. Paul said, “Rejoice with those who rejoice. Mourn/weep with those who do.”
I pray that God had mercy on his soul.
We are in the month of November when the Catholic Church specifically remembers the departed – the faithful departed. God who is the Judge knows who they are. Our concern is to pray for them. We have a Book of Life in the Church which is near the Altar. I have written some names of those who passed on from December 2010 to present. I will write his name in that Book. We leave all in the hands of the Lord.
I once again extend my deepest sympathy to all members of his family.
May Hilroy Ambo rest in God’s peace. Amen!

A road awareness campaign driven by the government or private sector is required urgently to address this. Too many drivers driving recklessly and selfishly. When the new westcoast road is complete the death
toll is really going to rise.. The number of drivers cornering too fast and then having to straddle lanes is at an all time high. The crazy overtaking and scooter/bike crew is another whole story.

    • only
      November 13, 2011

Right you are. If the govt. wants revenue, start by giving big fines to these reckless drivers. Then they may start to change their ways.

      • REALLY?

We need to drive with due care think and see that the road is clear that we can see ahead and be sure that nothing else is coming before overtaking people are taking other peoples life in their hands on the buses as well. It is not going to help this person now but others need to take heed. Even Police in there own cars are racing under the canecliff and overtaking. Motor Bikes over take on left and right side. Need to be very Alert out their. Police is needed to get the speeding under control. Having said all this nobody will be extra careful because someone died Remember Grace last year the case has not even been heard yet will be 2years going soon.

I travel this road 5 days a week. Whether is Chinese or Dominican, but the majority of these heavy equipment drivers drive carelessly because they know that they will not take the brunt of damage from any accident. They take corners wide, they drive in the middle of the road, they speed ! Just recently a co-worker and i were within a few inches of being squashed in her car by some heavy equipment on the road. Lord help us who travel on these roads frequently.

What indirect criticism? DNO is not only read by Dominicans, this is the WWW. And for your information DNO is correct, the vehicle in question is a Pick Up. A van is something else.

listen this a stupid argument, they are addressed as small or large trucks in some countries,it does not matter, this is not the issue here,we are witness to an unfortunate accident,we need to be sympathetic toward the family’s who are both impacted by the lost of life and lessons to be learned here.

We have the most reckless drivers in Dominica> They have no regard for human life> they over pack the buses, drive too quickly and when u complain they tell you you scared to die.
I am not scared of dying but it shouldn’t be in an accident that could have been avoided> Police officers need to take their jobs seriously and not only ticket illegal parking, but over loaded buses and reckless driving, senseless use of the horn just to name a few> sympathy to the family of the deceased

Drivers Drivers Drivers! take it easy on the road. All you can put all the amount of Thumbs down all you want, but some of these drivers are just too reckless. They do not care about the lives of others. There is a big sign which says “DO NOT OVERTAKE” right under the Canefield cliff, and what do they do, they do their darnest to overtake as fast as possible. The road from Pond Case to Canefield is as smooth as possible, so what do they do, they fly. I have seen so many near misses, It is scary. Drivers, you need to understand that roads do not kill people neither do vehicle, except your brakes giveaway, but it is the senseless judgment of reckless drivers who always seem to be in a hurry.

I AM PLEADING TO BLACKMORE, TO INSIST THE SPEED BUMPS BE PLACED ON THE NEW CANEFIELD HIGH WAY. PLEASE, SPEED BUMPS SAVE LIVES.

    • Response
      November 13, 2011

Either you were secretly listening to me or we think very much alike. You share my thoughts exactly. So many times I witness senseless overtaking and speeding under the cliff and the place is not yet even completed. What will they do when it is? SPEED BUMPS PLEASE because they are not recognising the no overtaking sign. My child travels there to school everyday. Please protect her and other innocent people. I am so afraid of the drivers.

Maybe because we live in Dominica and we witness the recklessness every day, all over the country. IT IS DOWNRIGHT SCARY. The younger guys drive really bad. Most drivers stop anywhere, drivers are impatient, they can hardly wait for a driver infront them to make a complete stop a turn. It is bad and it is getting worse with the new roads which are coming.
We see the drivers in Dominica everyday and it is the grace and mercy of God which prevents us from having more fatal accident. It is terrible. Our drivers are becoming very hostile, and not to mention the constant drinking which impedes some of these drivers judgement.

There is no question whether it was reckless driving. My concern is, of all the years I live in this country, the harshest punishment I have heard for vehicular homicide is suspension of licence for 10 years. And we all know they continue to drive even then. This we need to work on.

This is a dumper truck, not a trailer truck and therefore it does not need a guide. While information is sketch still, look at where the truck is, far to the left, which means he was driving on his side.
