A Dominican woman and her daughter perished yesterday afternoon in Marie-Galante when the vehicle in which they were travelling plunged into a swamp.
Efforts to save Nelly Thomas and her daughter Nathalie Marne were unsuccessful, but Marne’s four-year-old daughter was rescued. She is now at hospital in serious condition.
According to media reports the accident occurred at about 6 p.m at Lespine in the parish of Grand Bourg.
Sources in Guadeloupe told Dominica News Online that Nathalie Marne, a recently licensed driver, was reversing her new car when it and tumbled and fell into the swamp.
“It’s like it (road) has a edge so she reversed too near it and the car was powerful so the car tumbled and fall in the swamp. A man who let her pass for her to reverse said she didn’t need to go as far to do that, so she lost the control of the car and the front of the vehicule start to sink first. That’s why who was behind could escape but not them,” a resident told Dominica News Online.
“She had come and pick up her mom and a cousin by the side of the road. She was already with her four-year-old child, so she went to reverse,” the resident added.
The mother, born Nelly Thomas, hailed from Penville in Dominica. She moved to Marie-Galante many years ago where she married a local Max Marne.
Marie-Galante is an island of the Caribbean Sea located in the Guadeloupean archipelago. Marie-Galante is constitutionally part of France, as Guadeloupe is an overseas region and department.
