Efforts are being made by the government to export drinking water from Dominica to Haiti.
Minister for Disaster Preparedness Charles Savarin made that declaration at a press conference on Thursday.
Emergency aid officials have announced that water and medicines are amongst the primary needs of the island, affected by a major earthquake earlier this week.
“We have a long history of association with Haiti and there are a number of Haitians on island and this is the least we can do,” Savarin told Thursday’s press conference.
He said the question of water and medicine remains a priority for those who have escaped the ordeal.
“We decided that we would seek to coordinate a response from Dominica and governments have decided to coordinate a Dominica response to that it does not get lost in transit. We want to ensure that whatever we are able to send to Haiti gets delivered to Haiti. We will coordinate transportation to transfer as much bottled water as we can muster in Dominica to Haiti,” he said.
“We have been in touch with Loubiere and Trois Piton water and we will seek to mobile as much as we can from Dominica. We are also seeking to mobilize air transportation to take the water to Haiti today or tomorrow,” he added.
Meantime, President of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce Genny Astaphan says so far 900 cases of water have been donated for initial shipment to Haiti.
Astaphan is encouraging the Private Sector and the general public to gather as much dry goods as possible at DEXIA to ensure the proper coordination in the delivery of the items.
we need some strategists in dominica.dont we give water to the tourist boats for next to nothing?call up clinton and offer to fill up a ship from dominica..if it comes thru, can u imagine the publicity?use your heads u so called ministers with no brains that are running dominica.you jokers
On another subject, were there any Dominican casualties from the earthquake?
I hope we do the right thing and take some of the children who are now orphans. Like the United States, the wider Caribbean has turned their backs on Haiti. This is our sister island nation. They look and talk like us. It’s time for us to be our brother’s keeper.
Let’s do all that is humanly possible to help our brothers and sisters who have lost everything, especially hope. No more political pandering.
