Government seeks US, French assistance in Layou Valley disaster

Government is seeking assistance from the governments of the United States and France to deal with an ecological disaster that occurred in the Layou Valley this morning.

That is the word coming from Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who indicated that his ministry has made contact with these two governments to assist with a helicopter to inspect the Matthieu Dam in Layou.

“We have been in touch with the US and the French to see if they assist us with a helicopter to make an assessment to decide what is the situation with the dam because we cannot venture close to it at this time,” he said.

He said government and Disaster Preparedness Office officials are currently trying to further assess the situation but have been warned that they should stay clear from the area since another disaster could occur at anytime.

Meantime he said several millions of dollars will be needed to repair Clark Hall Estate Bridge (near Glo Chaud) which was extensively damaged.

“We have to see to what extent the bridge has been damaged. If it means that the structure is not sound enough, we have to have it demolished and consider a new bridge. Looking at the span of the bridges, that about $8-9-million. We also have to look at the lives of the people of Layou and those who are going to be unemployed as a result,” he said.

Of course wealthy nations should help others, in cases of natural disaster, the point about aid in general is that very little of it goes to help the poor, quite the reverse, forget the American’s because America is bankrupt (no cash) and if France decide to helps I hope it does not vanished into a corrupt black hole.

It is time that DA started to fend for itself and make that a priority instead of always looking elsewhere for aid. If the administration here made the welfare of the people a priority for a change, this island could be self-sufficient in the light of almost anything.

-We in the U.S. cannot provide aid to Communist supporters when we have our own issues to deal with.Where is Daddy Chavez? Let him help.
-22.7 million dollars to campaign for election two years ago could have fixed this problem in the Layou Valley and still have money left over to patch the millions of craters in the road network around the island.

A disaster in the country and look who are playing politics.

Do any of you remember (around 2002) the USA threatening to withdraw Military aid to Dominica (that aid amount to about EC$300,000).

If Dominica failed to sign a bilateral agreeement regarding the ICC (International Criminal Court).

So that no US citizen can be brought before the International Criminal Court.

A Court (the US does not recognise) but some are asking/saying Ghaddifi should be brought before.

So PM asked US for help, so what.

If he had not, you would still have had something to say?

I for one would expect the PM to have asked ALL of the countries Dominica has diplomatic relations with, for assistance.

In such times, it does not matter to me and should not matter you, which one steps up to the plate first.

But if political points is what you want, when the citizens of Layou are suffering, wallow away.

All you people out there be it in DA, US etc. Where do you all think the Gov’t of Dominica get it’s money from? How much money do we make in DA? Only a small percentage of you my people are able to contribute to taxes. We rely on returnees, visitors, customs and the few tourist who are told before they come ashore that there is nothing in DA to buy. How do you think the roads and bridges are being build? Most of us who believe natural disaster should not happen should get off our backside and help to do something. I am sure if we all can come together we would come up with something. Please stop blaming the govt.

So Dominica is miniscule and unimportant now? That shows what some people think of themselves and their families. The u.s has problems, china, the entire Europe, asia, even Russia. It doesn’t mean that there is not money for help. There is always funding or some combination of funds. Is the east of Africa nit in crisis? Are they not receiving help as we speak? The PM stated that he asked for a helicopter to assess the area and he never said he asked for money yet. Afterall how can he ask for money without an estimated damage? He just stated how much he think the bridge would cost. He has no idea the extent of the additional damage since it has not yet been assessed. Whether he will actually ask for money, we will see.

Stop making the US and French look like surperior forces in the Caribbean. These countries always have a few tricks up their sleeves. They pretent to help but they destory instead.
Sorry PM you should look somewhere else.
It’s time OECS and Caricom set-up an emergency response team with enough equipment to handle the types of disasters that we are likely to face.

Lets say thank god it happen in the night. Another thing i never heard anyone trying to find out who is missing in dominica and not only layou. The reason for that is someone could be driving coming to layou or going to roseau around that area and got wash away and nobody would know so lets start asking questions who missing around dominica PLEASE before we start talking politics.

  18. Patrick Benjamin
    July 29, 2011

I am not a fan of the Prime Minister, but all the government is aking for, is the use of a helicopter to have a good view of the disaster are and that is the best equipment to use to make that assessment.

  19. July 29, 2011

Ppl don’t be so quick to criticize. The PM only said he is asking for assistance with a helicopter to do assessments. He never said he was going to ask these two countries for monies

THE PM SHOULD NOT SEEK ANY HELP, HE SHOULD SEE TO IT THAT ALL THOSE CONDEMNING HIS ACTIONS,..SOLVE THE PROBLEM..

MAYBE IT WOULD BE A BETTER IDEA IF HE MAKE A BIG COOLMEA, BUY SOME CASS RUM AT SHILINFORD, LADIES COOK AND MEN WORK.. EVERY ONE INCLUDING HIMSELF SHOULD DO THE JOB FREE OF CHARGE….MAMA PAPA SON DAUGHTER ALL DOMINICANS, SHOULD BE FORCED TO CONTRIBUTE…WORK..

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT, NO MATTER WHAT GOOD IS DONE IN GOOD IN DOMINICA, YOU’LL STILL GET CONDEMN, DO BAD THE SAME…SO LET THEM MAKE ALL THE NECESSARY ARRANGEMENT TO FIX/SOLVE THE PROBLEM….ONE MONTH FROM EVERY HOUSE HOLD, VOLUNTEER…SEE HOW FAR THEY WILL GET….

I FOR SURE NOT CUMIN…..I WILL ASK OBAMA TO PICK ME UP IN THE AIR FORCE ONE JET…WHITE HOUSE FOR ME….

Listen to this bunch of beggars, once is dominican it not good??? So we cannot help ourselves?? At no time?? Never??? Not nothing we can do for ourselves, shame shame and shame…. In the next millenium will we still be begging dominicans???? Aid aid aid. Allu must get aids. So many engineers we have. All over the world. The diaspora can come to vote, but where them now???? Oh I forget bmoore say they not paying their loans. Alas poor us we. Continue to let outsides come and make millions on our resources. And never ask allu government why we cannot make millions too. And keep the mentality that we can always beg to use somebody else helicopter. We had helicopter we, allu say it frightening birds….when jet landing in dominica allu will want birds on allu runway?? Anyways papa. Ce la vie

  22. Charles Mason
    July 28, 2011

First, the US is not about to file bankruptcy.

Second, it’s only a helicopter that is being asked for. By replacing the current government, that would not create another helicopter. I’m sure the Dominica government will be equipped with a helicopter after this tragedy.

It’s not about politics. The government is doing its best with what they have and the resources that they can utilize. They can’t use the entire budget for an ecological disaster; even the US or China wouldn’t do such a stupid thing.

Libyan Rebel Commander Mohammad Abdel Younes and his military aides Col. Muhammad Khanes and Nasir al-Madhkur were summarily executed .Commander Younes was summoned before the Rebels Judiscial Council to answer for his ties to Quaddafi forces-under suspicion- since he was a former Int.Min. in Libya under Quaddafi. The summary executions do not bode well- and these are the people on whose behalf NATO is going bankrupt while fighting for them. There has to be an international fact finding now to these executions

People stop this – He is knocking on the door of our heart. We are not thankful and grateful. So much we have to him thanks and praise for. Before we make all those negative comments – let us begin to feel for others and love oneanother as he has loved us. Stop the hatred – this is not time for politics. Let us stand together as a godly Nation. Stop those negative remarks and the Lord will open the windows and send more blessing over this land.

He has given us so many blessings and this incident is just another blessing. Blessing? Yes I say blessing since not one life was lost and shouldn’t we be thankful for this? Come on people let us awake from our slumber and give thanks and praise to the only one who deserves praise and honour – Our Father who loves us so much!

I recognized that prophets under the inspiration rebuked wicked and dictatorial kings. Elijah and Ahab and John the baptist and Herod are two example among many others. Skerrit keeps saying God is good and has no fear of God in Him; by his fruits you shall know him. John the baptiste died for the truth and Elijah had to run for his life.i am in support of justice- Skerrit needs to come clean and needs to repent.

That strategy will not work Mr. skerrit, you need to come again and make an international apology for the unfortunate comments you made about NATO. Isn’t the USA and France members of NATO? Here me Dominicans: When Mr. Skerrit gets help from USA and France let us prepare ourselves to give credit to these international giants and not Skerrit. If Skerrit wants credit then he needs to also ask USA and France to provide Dominica with the expertise such as the FBI to investigate the Fire bombing of Mr. Emmanuel’s home, the fertilizer bobol, the garbage bin scandal and the the blaircourt villas. What a grateful heart we should have instead of nuturing the hatred that we have for some of our fellowmen that we cannot separate enemy “Politics and the Evil One” from our speech. People if you cannot thank the Lord for his mercies and safeguarding lives in this natural disaster, then it is better you say nought.

Cool down people. No lives were lost. It is only material damage we suffered and that can be remedied. No point in playing the blame game. Let’s get help from whatever source we can muster. We were trying to promote “miracle” like another Dominican wonder and no one objected. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but absolutely useless unless you are willing to learn from it. We are a resilient people and we shall survive!!

The US and France because it is easier for a helicopter to come from Guadeloupe or P/Rico. I have never seen so many dumb bloggers.

  59. Pedro
    July 28, 2011

This is sad. However, the disaster managent office knew that this scenario was likely so there could have been a better game plan. Regarding the helicopter reconnaissance, of course that is important, but like we have contacts for health emergencies (air evacuation) we should have such contacts already lined up for these types of things (air reconn), and with all the taxes being paid, the should be able to afford a short flight for such purposes without waiting for foreign assistance. After all, helicopter services are available from other islands.

    • Anonymous
      July 28, 2011

All the taxes being paid? By whom? Do you know the number of Dominicans who shoule be paying PAYE or some form of income tax and are not?

Because Government afraid to tax the poor man. whilst that same poor man and all his children walking around with $900.00 Blackberry etc!

But I see your point. Although its difficult to just have a chopper waiting on standby in another country since you never know when this is gonna happen and where (as other islands too use their services)

Do you not read the news? I read that Gaddahfi and his regime’s food supplies are dwindling and they are in need of supplies as food. Gaddahfi refuses to relinquish his position.
Chavez is a sick man. How can they help?
Make it your business to read the news.
Dominica is presently in need of advice and help and the French and U.S. should assist.

Even though the US is in a debt crisis as it is stated, it can always help where there is a disaster. Furthermore some people as the Republicans and others make a mountain out of a molehill. The US will not sink.
The US has money in reserve for disasters and to help other nations in need.

thats the whole problem people… as Dominicans we think the because you criticize someone’s actions that you are against them. people get real… because i call myself a labourite or a worker… that does not mean i have to agree with everything my party does. we have to learn to think freely and agree to disagree instead of following blindly. stop being sheep.

the american foreign policy stinks at times. nato is wrong sometimes. when they are wrong and you believe they are wrong…. say they are wrong. other countries have criticized the american government’s involvement in Libya and other countries. we are a sovereign nation and our elected leader has a right to his opinion… (whether or not its the unanimous thought of the nation) america criticizes china on human rights and the treatment of the monks all the time… but who does america go to to borrow money to pay its bills???? china….

we are not supposed to agree on everything people. and we are not supposed to stifle our opinions either… but because we share a bond and certain commonalities… we should always have each other’s backs in time of need

The US still imports oil from venezuela (third largest supplier, if I’m not mistaken) So what is the big deal?
