Haitian wants Dominicans to know about ‘real’ situation in Haiti

President of the Haitian Dominican Association, Roland Desir

President of The Haitian Dominican Association Roland Desir has said that he is convinced that most of the world is ignorant about the real state of Haiti, despite what is shown in the media.

Desir told a press conference organized by Digicel this morning, that what has been publicized by the media is only a small glimpse of what the real situation is in Haiti.

“All yesterday, I have been calling; there have been tremors, all yesterday afternoon. It’s only this morning they had on the internet of the 6.1 that hit. But all yesterday they calling me and I talking to them, they telling me they still feeling shaking… They [people] need to understand the magnitude of what happening down there,” the president said.

“I call my stepfather… He said to me what you are seeing on TV we are seeing it too, it is nothing compared to what we are living here,” Desir said.

According to Desir, he learnt that residents were being asked to move from the flat areas to more mountainous terrain because of the risk of a tsunami due to the earthquakes. He said that this has resulted in scores of residents rushing up to these mountainous areas. They are all sleeping outside.

Desir also added that while there are a few persons who have money, there is a very low supply of food or water.

“They told me that, Roland… we have the money, but we don’t have no food…Our mouth getting split because we have no water. That is something that you all have to understand…Their lips are being split by the cold, because they are sleeping outside; they cannot sleep inside and they are thirsty,” the president said.

Desir described another situation which caused additional panic for residents in Haiti last night.

“And worse again, something happen last night again. The rain was drizzling and everybody panicked. … They panicked just because they sleeping outside… They are on the concrete on the street sleeping, if rain is falling what going to happen, will they sleep under that rain?” Desir asked.

    Dear Mr. Otherside

who ever told u Haitian was a role model for any Caribbean country to get independence? i mean they got theirs a full 150 years before the other CARICOM countries even attempted their Independence struggle, and when we did get our independence we weren’t totally left in the dust as to how to move forward.
It funny to talk about blight cuz Haitians are proud to say they helped the USA get Louisiana state and build New Orleans…. i dont know if most of can remember Hurricane Katrina?
On their religion, thought naivety u mentioned that 80% of Haitians are Roman Catholic, something u most have seen on CNN and other American media. Well on Haitian tourism booklets promoting the island states their main religion is voodoo. all their former leaders since the 1950’s (papa and baby doc, even the ex catholic priest Aristide) practiced and embraced the religion as Haiti’s main religion (Aristide said so himself). You mention only the ‘INCOMPETENT ONES’ do voodoo, well my friend vast majority of haitians are illiterate so i guess a vast majority of them are into voodoo.
All i glad u say haitians are so hard working, they are also the most corrupt, greedy, divisive and selfish people in the Caribbean- just take a short look at their history.
… and if ur’re not too busy could u explain to us on the haitian pact with the devil? The pact in 1791 that kicked off their independence struggle- the most bloody in the western world’s history. Kinda interesting that all of the independence leaders died unnatural deaths….hmmmm

SO I WAS READING THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS AND IT SIMPLY SPELLS OUT THAT SOME DOMINICAN’S THESE DAYS NO LONGER USE WHAT THEY CALL A BRAIN AND FORGET WHAT A HEART IS….SUCH A SHAME!!

HAITIANS ARE SOME OF THE MOST HARD WORKING PEOPLE. WHILE MOST OF YOU ALL CRYING YOU ALL DON’T HAVE JOBS AND WHAT NOT, THEY SOMEHOW DO! WHY? BECAUSE THEY SEE THE FUTURE.

AND TO THOSE THAT THINK THAT HAITI HAS A BLIGHT..COME BETTER THAN THAT!
HAITI WAS THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE ONCE UPON A TIME WHICH PAVED THE WAY FOR THE REST OF THE CARIBBEAN TO EVEN THINK OF WANTING INDEPENDENCE. THEY DIDN’T TURN THEMSELVES THAT WAY, THEY ARE IN THIS CURRENT STATE BECAUSE OF THE DEBT TO SPAIN ( Y’ALL NEED TO READ ).

THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TREES AND RIVERS BECAUSE CUTTING THEM DOWN WAS THEIR ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME. GIVE THESE PEOPLE A BREAK.

NOT ALL OF THEM PRACTICE VOODOO BY THE WAY ( IT’S A RELIGION FOR THE INCOMPETENT ONES ) 80% OF THEM ARE CATHOLICS…SO WHAT DOES THAT SAY? MAYBE ALL CATHOLICS ARE EVIL…THAT’S WHAT SOME OF YOU ALL CONJURED IN Y’ALL SMALL MINDS.

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR THESE PEOPLE….HE DON’T LIKE UGLY, WATCH YOURSELF!!

  7. January 23, 2010

wow, i had such a great night watching bill clinton, jay z, sting, wykliff, denzel, justin…. and so much more wise rich and talented people talk sing and give there all for haiti , then i cried when i saw a little girl was pulled out alive frome under the rocks and debri, then i smilled and tell myself why worry about the ignorant people that make this folks like haddash, sassy, miss fact, dominican in canada and any body else who wish to share those negative comments on haiti i realy wish u all well . and i,ll quote [ forgive them lord for they know not what they,re saying.] and truly fools die for lack of wisdom. and to my fellow dominicans who cannot give money, water or food prayers works wonders if u believe. and take care of the haitians and other nations in dominica as we would like to be treated in peoples country.and my apreciation goes out to charles savrin the prime minister and the good ctizens of dominica for your contribution not just for haitian but for humanity thanks.

I have no idea why we dominicans can be so cold and heartless to other human beings just like ourselves. Let’s forget that they are haitians. Are tehy not human beings? christ died for every human being on this earth including the haitians and if we can be so heartless by writing all those negative comments whom do you think will want to help us if we fall in a similar situation? I do not live in Dominica now but I was home when hurricane david hit us and it was not good for us. we needed help. the haitian people need more help than we needed at that time. Let us concentrate on helping them instead of bad-talking them.. I can no longer look at it because it is too heartbreaking.

all i can say is send food, clothes, milk and lots of water don’t bring more haitions in dominica them people there have blight, god is calling on them and yet they are not seeing. u see they got crakers and the stamp on it saying it is not good , it was god food that he send . to me haiti is not poor as they think is the people that are wicked and the population together with all the evil, i have leaved in haiti and with my money i had every thing that we have in DA and the us. if there is 100 haitions 85% wicked they all can do evil but none can cure so that is why the country is like that , so my people try not to bring more evil in DA after what we self have already. please people of DA don’t let the PM and his government import them any more because poor da will be like them.if i had the $$$ maybe i would have taken all the babies they would not have time to learn the wickedness, send food da people, clothes and what ever u see is needed.

For all those who think that GOD is responsible for the terrible disaster in Haiti, should read this very interesting article by Mark Wignall, a Jamaican journalist.

IN THE BEGINNING MAN CREATED GOD

    By Mark Wignall

And then man created God in his own image to represent him.

Not too long after man created God to represent all of the whims and fancies of mankind, man created God to be the creator of all of the convenient bits and pieces of what he, as mankind desired God to be.

First of all, said mortal man, God must be our creator so, let us endow God with the power to create us even though, in the first instance, we were the ones who created Him.

Who are we, mere mortals, affected by many twisted illnesses of the body, and the ultimate expression of our existence, that thing known as death, to dare question the charted course that we know nothing of? If we are good and love our neighbour, we die. If we steal from our neighbour who loves us, we die. If we kill our enemies who hate us, we still die. But, in the mix we create versions of God who will redeem us. But, it is only after we end the only existence we know.

The picture is clear but at the edges it is somewhat blurred. This planet called Earth (who gave it that name?) is not yet finished with its building programme. Because of that, there are many natural disasters which are a fact of what Earth and its existence in the unknown entity called the universe must endure.

Over many years there have been these so-called acts of God, like hurricanes, earthquakes, excessive rainfall leading to floods and massive loss of lives, famine due to absolutely no rain, and of course, man’s ability to tell the gullible the reason for all of it.

In 1976 an earthquake in Tangshan, China (8.3 on the Richter scale) caused the death of over 600,000 people. Where was God?

Before that happened, God, fashioned by man, created a hurricane in a poor country, Bangladesh in 1970 and after the country was flooded as a result, the death toll was about 500,000. Was God sleeping?

In 2004 when most of us in Jamaica were enjoying Christmas, said to be the celebration of the birth of the son of God, a terrible tsunami swept over the South Asian coastlines and took the lives of earth’s brothers and sisters. Close to 300,000 died. Where was God?

Close to home, the deprived nation of Haiti has been over many years economically savaged by the might of France and the USA, and it has never gained acceptance in the league of black nations. Black, as in skin colour.

Haiti has been devastated by an earthquake, and maybe close to 250,000 may be dead. Where was God? This God that we so revere.

Have we not seen this before? Devastation. Hundreds of thousands of lives lost. Then, after many days, one little child is pulled from the rubble and people say, “Oh my God, it’s a miracle. It’s God’s work.”

Well, if God could save one person, why did He arrange the killing and the suffering of over 200,000 people in Haiti?

Why has God allowed gunmen to run wild in Jamaica and kill innocent people? The answer is simple but it is, at the same time, unpalatable for many.

    God does not exist.

Of course, the religious, especially those fervently into their convenient re-creations of God have said, like the preacher man Pat Robertson, that God is vexed with Haiti. In that lies the ultimate creation of God by mankind.

The ability to tell us where the mind of this God is and what He will be doing next week.

We exist on this earth and no man, no woman knows why we are here. We do what we need to be because we are here.

Think of it for a while. What is man’s main objective? To put food in his mouth. It is not to worship an unknown entity. But, if a man is hungry, there is a need in him to blame something for it. So, he creates the alter ego of God. Satan!

I am hungry and Satan is the cause. He gets a bellyful and he says to himself, “God has given me this to eat.”

Devastation in the form of earthquakes and hurricanes attract the ignorant and the gullible. And I entirely understand them. They need a reason to explain what lies beyond their understanding.

In Haiti, if it was God who caused a child to be rescued after suffering, terrible suffering buried under a dark pile of near-death, the same religious people will tell you that it was God that caused the earthquake in the first place.

    Why?

Because, it was man who created God. Therefore it is man who created God’s job description and who decides which side God falls on. Like a good politician, man ensures that God is right on all sides. So, it was evil in poor Haiti that brought about God’s wrath.

God loves you if you are good. And even if he puts you under the pressure of Job to prove your love for Him, people like me have no right to question why such a powerful God would have need for so much evil “fun”, watching from His heaven.

If you are evil, all you have to do is say that you believe in Him. It has absolutely nothing to do with how you live. If you beat your wife on Mondays, starve the children on days in between Tuesday and Friday, kick the dog on Saturday and go to church on Sundays, it is OK in the eyes of God.

So, it was God who caused the Haitian earthquake. But it will be man who will help them recover, no matter the political intentions. Man will, after all, have his version of God constantly renewed. Why? It was man who created God in the first place.

These people has left the country sides and migrated to this town, the capital, got it from a Haitian source. there are no more farmers, nor do they try to help themselves. Everyone wants to be in the city. don’t get me wrong! i feel for the people, the mare fact that some got money, means that all is not lost

I have been reading a number of these comments, and it is clear that ignorance of history govern most of these comments. I have always had a problem with the fact that history is no longer a compulsory subject in many of our schools. It would behoove a large percentage of our population to read up on the history that governs Haiti. Haitians as a people should be respected for having a backbone and standing up to their colonizers despite what it cost them. It would do you Dominican much good to read; “The hate and the Quake’ an article by Sir. Hiliary Beckeles of the University of the West Indies. Maybe, just maybe, you would refrain from making such IGNORANT comments. The article can be found at this link.

All of them have tv, don’t they know about Sudan? One Million plus dead and millions more people displaced in the desert! How about Zimbabwe?
These are man made disasters which are way more severe- Haitian is like a Sodom with the voodoo religion, and dont get me wrong i feel sorry for Haitian kids with a future but not for ignorant adults who care only about themselves and feel the world owes them- anyone seen this vulgar attitude during the Asian Tsunami or in Sudan… or even in Iraqi?!

Where is your office, who is the vice president, and the rest of your executive, and committe members? When and where was the association formed or founded?
Sir, we hear Haitians all over complaining and when ask to go to the ” HAITIAN ASSOCIATION” FOR HELP and information, the response is, “:What Association, and where it is? Even in Roseau, Haitians in Roseau CANNOT give any information about any such association. Sir as a Haitian your self, do please give this information so that we can HELP YOUR PEOPLE with it. waiting for a response.

Dear DNO, you have given information to the public stating that Mr Roland Desir is the president of the Haitian Dominican association, it would be good if you could let the Dominican public know, where is the Associations office, and who is the members, especially the DOMINICANS that is part of that association. thanks for you help and support, do continue with the great job. Hey Sissereau, get over there and give those people some water.

There is also an outside chance that these earthquakes aren’t by chance.

Since the 1950’s, certain military factions have had the capacity and know how to drill into the ocean and plant detonations which result in affecting the tectonic plate and can cause an earthquake. What we don’t know is whether this was the case this time with Haiti.
The fact that the UN has a headquarters there is suspicous.
Never send cash donations over there. There are opportunists…..that take half the money.

It’s a stereotypical statement that you are making you do not the facts and imagine yourself in the situation. You want to call the Haitians name but It has been said that a stereotypical statement tells MORE about the person who says it than about the people who are being stereotyped. Again, if you have nothing good to say, stay quiet.

    Get the facts!!!

  34. Miss FACTS
    January 20, 2010

1st of all, I disagree with the excuse of fustration, cause it’s just a case of stupid and ignorant people who are not easing up the situation on themselves but are just making it worst.
2ndly i find that the same way dominican can struggle and survive with basics , the hatians can do the same! plus with the financial (billions of $), military and physical help of the of the europeans, the chinese, americans and the rest of the world they can make it in solidarity. Is not to say that domica cannot help haiti, because there are rivers and provision, but dominica itself needs help.
In addition, when people don’t have and they need, whatever they get, they take! Because they are asking for help and they want to be stepping and crushing food on worldwide news! Cé moun ca comparéson…
3rdly,If the haitians want to leave their country , who is going to rebuild it! And put the country back it’s foot!

  35. Hmmm
    January 20, 2010

    @ I’m confused!

This is very harsh and wicked thing you wrote. If you have nothing good to say, DO NOT COMMENT. This is a time where the Haitian people are trying to survive. Imagine yourself or your loved ones sleeping on the streets – On the hard concrete for days and barely eating or drinking and the worst thing to happen is rain at night. Some ppl can be very cold hearted. Rain is a good thing but NOT in the context you put it. My dear I hope you no that those ppl are strong and NO MATTER what happens GOD is on their side. About the money – it means that: they have it but you cant find food to purchase because everywhere is damaged.

Thank God for what you have and that the Lord has spare D/ca for such disaster because it could have been any country. Once again if u have nothing good to say about the situation, do not say anything.

CARICOM should use more Dominican and St.Lucian personnel in Haiti because of our common Creole background. There wouldn’t be a language barrier and they would have more trust in us.
