UPDATE WITH PHOTOS: House collapses at Yampiece

Collapsed house at Yampiece

A house collapsed in the Yampiece area Tuesday morning.

Owner of the small wooden structure, Jerry Joseph, told DNO that the incident occurred    at about 6.30 am. He said he heard a loud noise and felt the house moving, eventually falling on its side, to the ground.

Joseph said that at the time of the incident, the house was occupied by him and his five children. He said no one was severely injured but the other five occupants were taken to hospital with minor scratches.

According to our DNO reporter, fire services personnel were on the scene earlier and so were the police.

A large crowd of curious on-lookers had also gathered in the area.

DNO has not received information about the specific cause of the collapse of the house but parts of Dominica including Yampiece, experienced heavy rainfall Monday night.

Owner of the house Jerry Joseph

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the island, as Tropical Depression NINE, which is expected to become a tropical storm later today, draws nearer.

Thank God everyone escaped unharmed; however the Housing Development Dept. in Dominica should issue permits for anyone who decides to build. These permits would monitor whether or not buildings are being constructed safely. This “shack” appears to have no support.

This is a builder who I assisted with materials to build his house (safeguard) his house because of the concern of his small ones. And he never did anything some of the materials he even sold them. When called to do a job, he complains that it is raining or he does not have a ride.
There are two types of people; those who are ambitious and will turn something small into something marvelous.
There are the others who just don’t care and will not strive. God has bless each and everyone of us and we have to claim or take our blessings. Our blessings come in different areas and the materials which were given to him might of been a blessing. A man with his talent just had to act on that and he never did. God help those who help themselves also.

I am very sorry to see this but I pray that the children are safe. My concern are the children. Adults make their choices and children follow.

How long was he living in that house? It is a good thing no one was badly hurt.
Whatever type of dwelling house, a man’s home is his castle. I am certain that he was happy and satisfied living in it with his family. The house may not have been built properly in that it may have been on soil which erodes when heavy rain falls.

Some people plan their family and live in their nice safe house. Others don’t worry, make plenty children and have no place to put them. With all those children that man can never have money. What is their age? Some times we are very concerned while inside those shacks have big expensive flat screens and a blackberry for each child.

This is a sad event. Thank God that they are all OK. May the Lord put it in the hearts of those who can help to offer the family a helping hand. Poverty is not pretty, but it is worldwide. There’s no need to criticize. It was a weak structure, but mansions get destroyed as well. I wish them the best for the future.

And just to imagine that the dear PM is goin around boasting of that the his party has “revolutionised” the housing situation in D/ca. That’s just shameful. Those who are really in need of the assistance are not getting any, situations like these bring us to realise that the housing situaton is nt very dfrnt than it was 5 yrs ago. So shameful

There are not so bright and empathetic comments being made here. (Tiny)

Today you up tomorrow you down baby. The LORD giveth and He taketh away. He raises the poor out of the dunghill and makes princes into paupers.

The guy did with what he have and he deserves our sympathy and not to be looked down upon. After all, what are we but just flesh and bones; a reed blowing in the wind.

Atleast the guy was not homeless or in prison. He did what is expected of all fathers, he had a roof over his children’s head. Let us be glad and joyful that there were no deaths or serious injuries and support each other.

If there are any donations to help this family out, please let me know, I would love to contribute.

    GOD bless us all…

Wait a minute!! Didn’t I hear the government boasting of a ‘housing revolution” all over the island nuh?

Is that a sign on the ‘housing revolution?’

Or is it some of people getting houses? I know for a fact the parl rep of a certain constituency renting a house from a woman who was given a government sponsored house under the ‘housing revolution’. Now tell me, is that right? Does that woman really need a house? She have house renting for the parl rep. I am sure there are people who are more in need.

I not calling names eh. ok

    • Justice and Truth
      August 22, 2012

It is not right. This is taking advantage of the system and their generosity. She should not be renting a house which she was given free. You should report it to the authorities.

You should not compare the PM and his housing to that of this man. Use your discretion. The PM, one of his stature is entitled to a decent house. He will also be entertaining dignitaries. He needs a decent place to do so and also for those who wish to spend their visiting time with him. If it were you would you not be in the same position?
