Two Dominican officials in Japan on training sessions are doing well after an earthquake measuring 8.9 in magnitude struck northeast of the country, says the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Julian Defoe is in Qushu, south of Japan, while Donny Bruno is in the capital Tokyo, reported Tatsuya Morita, representative of JICA in Dominica.
He said Defoe is from the Fisheries Division and “he’s okay” and Bruno “he’s also okay”. It’s not confirmed whether there were other Dominicans in Japan when the earthquake struck Friday.
The deadly quake triggered a tsunami leaving many dead and many more unaccounted for. The death toll is expected to exceed 1, 300, with most appeared to have drowned, Japanese officials say.
While earthquakes are not new to Japan, the latest one has been described as the biggest on record in more than 100 years. Japan has asked Britain to come to its aid.
