Loftus Emmanuel passes on

The man who was associated with organizing Harlem related musical events, businessman Loftus Emmanuel has died.

He passed away moments ago (Wednesday morning around 11am) at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

A diabetic, 65-year-old Emmanuel is reported to have been hospitalized at the PMH for the past week.

He is also reported to have undergone surgery.

Emmanuel is well known among music fans – he had a stall at the old Market in Roseau where he sold CDs, and also had a business on Cork Street in the capital.

Colleague Alex Bruno says the lifelong promoter and activist’s passing is a tremendous loss.

“What Jeff Joe (of Grammacks fame) was on stage, Loftus was behind the scenes,” Bruno said of the tall, lanky Rastafarian.

It’s not yet confirmed officially, but it’s being reported that Emmanuel’s death may be linked to some diabetic-related complication.

Lofty was first and foremost a dear friend of mine.I spent numerous hours at his home in Roseau reasoning with him on various issues. He sold hundreds of my CD’s to tourists from all over the globe. Some folks tried to demonize and scandalize him,but we must remember they also crucified Christ!!A word to the wise is enough.
He was the only promoter who brought myself and many other Dominican artists down to Dominica to perform on two occasions. He was Dominica’s #1 cultural ambassador.
Dominica has lost a true champion, patriot, and unapologetic promoter of Dominican art and culture.
Lofty, you will surely be missed,my brother. If there is another life,I look forward to our re-union .Somethings we just have no control over.
You are out of sight, but you will never be out of mind.Have a safe journey through the underworld.
My condolences to your family, and especially your children.
Till then,my brother!!Can’t imagine coming home and not being able to go check Lofty!!

when gramacks started in the early 70’s Lofty heard about the band and came down to st. joe to look for us,we’re reluctant to go perform at Harlem Festival, cuz we’d just started. Lofty insisted that we come perform,we did and that festival got us on the map. I remembered playing on stage in uniform white bell buttom pants, and long sleeve purple and white shirts. Lofty remain very close to all gramacks members he shall surely be missed by all of us.

There is always room for improvements…And right now we need that at PMH!!!
A few are rebuking the facts that something mysteriously dangerously is lurking in the halls of the PMH….Claiming more lives then saving….Most of you who made comments to the facts that WE are being negative and peoples do die,you are citizens of Dominica living aboard…Most of you have not been back home in ages…And yet you dare to fight against a simple request of investigations of PMH!…So many of my relatives and friends have dead at that hospital, over the past year and half…It is a unbelievable…Some went in for minor problems and had their feet cut off..Claiming that they were diabetics….Only to die at the ends in the hospital!!!…My Mother was wrongly diagnosed for years as a diabetic…Thank GOD she believed strongly in her home remedy..She refused to take the doc meds after feeling more sick on taking them….On a resent visit to another Doc,he confirmed she was not!…Can you imagine the ends results had she taken those meds?…Many of you have lost one or more family members in this Hospital…Maybe at the time you thought not much about it..A natural deaths or you accepted the results from the Doctors…But believe me peoples, something dangerously is taking lives at PMH and it needs to be taken seriously…Until then, every life that goes in and is exposed, is at some risks danger of not coming out alive!!!..Go on and think I talk nonsense…Just watch and you will see!!!!

A great loss to me personally. Loftus was one of my dearest links with Dom. No visit to the island went by without a visit to him with my dad, his cousin. Now they are both gone hopefully enjoying some sweet music together. People come and go, Lofty had a cool way with him which was kind and giving. My love to family at this time and may he rest in peace.

Now looking for souvenirs at the old market wii never be the same. His booth was a must stop for me. Always he would look me up and down as I approached and then take my hand and joke “boy you still looking young and sexy eh” in his slow soft way, and I would respond “and you still have that same ole talk eh”. Then we would laugh and banter like that for a few more minutes, and then get into which CDs he wanted me to buy. Then we’d get into lengthy, more serious discussion about changing times in DA. Such a sweet soul. Man, I’m really going to miss my friend. We knew each other from way back in 70, 71. Weh papa.

It is true that people die all over the world during and after surgery, but there are also many policies and procedures in place all over the world to ensure that patients do not contract other illnesses such as infections(nosocomal infections they are called), while hospitalized. Do you know that in the U.S., if a patient contracts an infection while in the hospital the insurance company will not pay for treatment, after the infection is diagnosed. That is why there are things in place to try to AVOID infections, like good handwashing, proper disposal of soiled materials. Ventilator acquired pnuemonia is a big killer and almost all hospitals are stepping up to avoid that and other infections at all costs. I just saw a program where a British doctor was describing a new solution that is being used through the breathing tube to make sure patients do not acquire pneumonia while on the ventilator. There are many other errors that can occur while one is hospitalized, such as wrong medication administration, mistaken diagnosis, wrong test results reported for a patient(in which case a patient is treated for something they don’t have),poor or inadequate medical management,
poor wound care, resulting in an infectious process in someone whose immune system may be already compromised, because they are ill, elderly or just went through major surgery. It is the responsibility of the Health Care System to be accountability to the patients by putting measures in place to make sure that quality care is what is delivered at all times. That involves proper training of ALL Healthcare workers, including the housekeeper, the food handlers, nurses, doctors, nursing assistants etc, anyone who works in the hospital needs training. Quality care should be everyone’s business. I am not criticizing PMH, but it should be a normal standard of care to avoid all these and other situations mentioned above. Is there a quality assurance dept. at PMH? who is making sure that quality care is provided? These is some food for though for the Ministry of Health, and these are basic policies that should be in place in a Health Care System. We may be taking too much for granted, but now that some people are asking questions, the powers that be, needs to look into these areas and see what can be done. There is always room for improvement.

The littlee that you can do for the country do but do not criticise. Be swift about hearing and slow about speaking. Lofty was a wonderful person and has been battling this for a long time.

Gone but never ever to be forgotten your shocking death have harlem really messed up in a way many had not fully anticipated.
The brain child behind the original concept f the WORLD CREOLE MUCIS FESTIVAL when he set out the idea of it to the then DFP leader ( his cousin Mamo) and a similar idea was further advanced at a DLP MASS lAGOON MEETING by Rosie Douglas ; when Douglas said that it would be be a great thing to have all our top cadence bands and others from all over the world performing on a big stage in Dominica; However it was the UWP’s Julius Timothy who took the idea to the practical level with persons like another Harlemite the late Eddie Toulon.

It must also be stated that it was out of the success stories coming out from the HARLEM ROCK FESTIVAL in NEWTOWN which was done under the leadership of chief organiszer LOFTUS EMMANUEL that actually gave birth and inspired the WCMF. Jeff jo always spke in glowing terms of hie beloved brotherlyfriend LOFTI. Loftus also owned the Harlem Jam City in HIGH STREET Newtown another platform directed at exposing and nurturing local talents.

It was due to loftus that NEwtowns name was ably transformed into HARLEM; the name given to the ALL Time CHAMPION FOOTBALL TEAM OF DOminica. There was also the Harlem Limers which Lofti was part of. He was indeed a key promoter of CADENCE MUSIC and once managed GRAMMACKS .

A soft spoken yet very intelligent LOFTUS the guru of promotion in Dominica will be sirely missed by the people of harlem and the dominica musical fraternity and off course a very large family and deep freinship base not only in Newtown but near and far !

People are not liking the comments about an investigation at the hospital but we need to seriously know the rate of persons who go in for surgery who makes it out alive vs those who do not. The death rate appears to be high, and instead of defending it let us inquire about it and find out the reason.

@ Teacher,I totaly agree with you…Something is really wrong…this is what I read on the forum of another page by two persons concering the death of Mr Charles Maynard!!…..
      Quote….”@WELL Well-loved. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 25 Thumb down 3 May 8, 2012

The Ministry of Health need to take an extensive look into the sudden deaths of older patients at the hospital. It may not be published but having worked in a medical environment the case of persons dying soon after surgery and the or short time on the hospital ward could be linked to a hospital borne bacteria called staphyloccus aureus or MRSA. I know it is rampant at the PMH because I contracted it when I did a C-section there less than a year ago. The hygiene practice there may be good but not sufficient. Perhaps the dissemination of information to the clinical staff, the ward aids and even family members is not clear. The simplest lack of care during convalescence could trigger this bug and the untimely death of the patient. More care needs to be taken during those times. I do hope that whatever measures are in place at the hospital are looked at more closely. Because for those of us who know what it is is becoming concerned. And yes I know the hospital board and authorities will jump up and claim that the best methods are in place…nothing beats revisiting the policies and measures in place”

Bush Doctor Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0 May 9, 2012

      “@WELL:
You are correct. With my limited research I know fist hand of at least 5 recent cases where the patients either died in ICU or while recuperating, IN THE HOSPITAL! In most cases if there was any operation performed they have been documented as “successful”. The problem therefore could be related to severe lack of post operative “after-care”. The MRSA is methicillin resistant and can be deadly to someone whose immune system is reduced especially after an operation. It has been noted that Vancomycin and other more potent antibiotics may help. The question is are the care givers aware of the proper treatment in these cases.

I just wish the responsible people could take note to clean up our health standards in Dominica”….Unquote

I believe some sort of investigations should take place…Too many peoples have been dying at this hospital…And I could share many more persons who passed away before my Uncle and this dear friend of my mom at the hospital..But one never took much noticed until it hit home…We believe that my uncle was given a wrong blood fusions…..But how could one tell/prove so?…My uncle knew it and told my mom he was not coming out here alive!!That since after the blood infusions he was not feeling well..A day later he died…What hurts most,is the fact that mom healthed him back on his feet when Doc’s said he would never walk again..She proved them wrong by giving my uncle natural herbs teas….My sister son is asthmatic…Spent most of his time in and out of hospital as a boy…On one of his attacks,he stayed in much longer and got worse..His body showed swellings….Mom instincts told her to seek the advise of another doc..Good thing she did..The child was being given the wrong med..Almost killed him at the early age of 10..So what would they say, natural cause of death-Asthma?…And we the families are most times not in the finance positions to seek help in investigating the deaths..We some how accept the verdicts the doctor’s gives..
I was at the health center,at the botanical gardens on a 6 hours wait..8am-1pm…At one point I had to use the bathroom…I stood up,cause ALL of the toilets rooms was a mess…And worse, some one had to pass me toilet paper which they them self had carried..To wash my hands was from the water bottle I carried with me..Non of the pipes was in running conditions..
I could continue on…But I know most of you who will read this, have your share of disappointments of the hospital…
Im not here to disrespect the family..It’s a time for grieving..We all mourn the death of this wonderful man,Loftus..But it’s maybe the best place to make awareness..That this Hospital has been killing more peoples then saving lives..And two well known persons, lives be gone after, after undergoing OP!??..In less a day apart?!!…Peoples starting asking yourselves some serious questions!!…There is nothing wrong in finding out the truths!!!..Just be prepared for the shock of it!!

Where are your stats? Express “high” rates numerically? What is the ratio of patients being admitted to those dying?

Primarily, people are admitted to hospitals because they are SICK – so what evidence can you provide to say that they “should not have died”? I am not saying that anything is justified, I am saying provide facts to support your claim. Just because a few people died doesn’t mean their was negligence on anyone’s part- there could be, but you can’t make this claim unless it can be supported by evidence.

So sad sorry for his family. He was a very kind humble pleasant gentleman. I will miss him at the Old Market. Good bye my friend Jah is Good and you are free now. Not a time for negativity but PMH is the last place a Rastaman wants to go, best you just lay down under a nice shade tree and call on the King of Kings.

  52. Waitukubuli-original
    May 9, 2012

Every time someone passes on at the PMH people are very quick to criticize the health care quality and blame the health professionals and even compare it to other nations (typical dominicans). Since “you” people are so quick to compare it to the good, old USA perhaps you should examine the Medical error statistics in the U.S. you will find out that which glitters is not always gold.

According to 2010 published reports by the DHHS those medical errors contribute to approx. 180,000 deaths of patients PER YEAR- those include error from medication, surgery, procedures and infection. So before you start to decry your country in the name of America do your research and establish facts. Stop speculating.

“A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards” (Prov 29:11).

    • And your point?
      May 9, 2012

Come on now … you guys need to stop this nonsense.

yes the hospital may not be the best – but where do you get off saying that there’s a high rate of death.

Honestly… people die – has anyone sued the hospital for negligence or claim that the hospital is responsible for hte death of their love ones.

I’m guessing you are not a doctor nor a statiscian to just say something like that because a few sick people die.

Sick people sometimes get better, or sometimes they die.
      that’s life…
if you wanted to say something to undermine the hospital and its staff who do their best beased on the circumstances, then back up your talk.

It’s easy to make such comments and not think of the impact they have.

      Grow up amdn and think

first of all the correct term is deaths and secondly it’s a hospital, people do die there. if is your time to go it’s your time to go; no amout of money or state of the art medical technology can save when the grim ripper comes.Whitney Houston as rich and famous as she was, it took them 6 weeks to comfirm what was really her cause of death, and they do medicine testing on humans in the US like it’s nobody’s business, so I dunno why you knocking down Da doctors like you could do any better.STFU and GTFOH.

The comment was made tongue in cheek, and I am sure it was a bit early for them to get a picture of the gentleman. But we have all seen many times when they do not have a picture of the person involved and most people are curious as to what the person looks like. Other people have said the same thing.
