Marigot Village Council Chairman vows to address lack of firefighting resources

Scene of the fire in Marigot earlier this week

Chairman of the Marigot Village Council, Egbert Jeremy, has vowed to address the lack of resources for fighting fires in the area.

He spoke in light of a major fire in the community earlier this week which destroyed a house and a garage, despite, according to him, efforts by firefighting personnel.

“As the Chairman of the Marigot Village Council, I will be addressing this …” he said on local radio station Q95. “I believe we have to come together and address these things.”

Jeremy explained the basis for his concerns. He stated that when the blaze broke out, he was the one who called the fire department and they responded quickly.

“They were there by 15 minutes,” he stated. “I stayed at my home and I looked, I saw the fire almost extinguished. So I walked from my home to take a look at what really took place.”

He said when he arrived on the scene, there was still fire on the roof of the house but was told that the fire truck had run out of water.

“It only carried like 400 gallons of water, so they had to go and get water somewhere,” Jeremy explained.

He stated while on the scene waiting for the truck to return, the nearby garage caught fire “and burnt flat before the truck returned.”

“The house was burning and no flames were in the garage before,” he remarked. “The truck went for water and by the time it came back, the garage was burnt completely.”

He further stated there was a fire hydrant in front of the building which was opened but it had no water.

“If that hydrant had water, there would be no need for the fire service,” he stated.

Jeremy said that he spoke to a fire officer on the scene and he was “taken aback.”

“Having lived in Marigot for so many years, worked in that area, was around the fire service, I never understood what is really taking place in Marigot,” he said.

He explained he was told that if a house is on fire in the area and there is a plane at the airport, the fire service will not leave to attend to the fire.

“That took me so hard,” Jeremy said.

Jeremy went on to say that although there are two fire trucks at the fire station, one cannot cross a bridge in the area since it is too big.

He said he spoke to the government about the size of that bridge in May and “they haven’t done anything to that bridge up to now.”

Jeremy also said that he will be contacting DOWASCO to raise concerns over lack of water in hydrants in the area.

There has been no official report from the fire department on the blaze.

A village Council should not have to wait until something like an accident happens to try and put things right it’s the duty of all village councillors to make sure most things are in order that is what you guys are being paid to do. Look at that ……. guy – Sorry Marigot lazy Linton this guy is useless walking about in Roseau doing nothing later on popping up on Q95radio talking rubbish and lies to make his self feel good, and not doing anything for his people in Marigot. Once again this guy is getting paid for doing nothing this sort of nonsense has to be address by the government. The saying is no work no pay simple as that.

It’s the reigning government’s job to ensure that every village/constituency is equipped with the important /live saving necessities for basic survival. There should be no need for any parl rep to meet with any minister to say my constituency needs a hospital, or this or that. The minister of health should know which constituency needs better healthcare access e.g. and do his job to make sure hospitals and clinics are fully functional. The minister of agriculture should do his job and find out what the farmers need, help them find the markets for their produce regionally, internationally etc. If the ministers are waiting for the parl reps to do their jobs for them then what exactly are their roles in these ministries???

Here is the problem. The government has a right to service every community for the people and not for the representing ParlRep. This 2018.Maybe when persons and communities start suing the Government for their losses, this irregularities will stop.

Is anything in this country working satisfactorily? The police force, the fire and rescue services, the ambulance service, water and electricity services all these services because of their abysmal performance are putting people’s lives and properties at serious risk. It is evidently conspicuous that the lives of ordinary Dominicans are of little value to this uncaring administration. Too many people are already living substandard lives and this is further exacerbated by the government’s woeful negligence and dereliction of duty. The only hope the citizens have to turn their misfortune in the opposite direction is to vote these corrupt bandits out of government in the next general elections. Failure to do so will only lead disastrous consequences for the population.

These are the issues the PArl Rep need to put on the front burner. He is too busy trying to be PM he forgot his own constituency who put him in Parliament.

I have already stated on this medium that I abhor and condemn the way in which Marigot people are treated by Central governmet, not only in this case but generally… These are talented, brilliant and hard working people. It’s not because they are smart enough to see the deception of the ruling DLP regime, that the requisite services should not be optimally provided to them .I am in support of the council’s chairperson to lead the struggle to stop the marginalization of our own brothers and sisters of Marigot .A flourishing Marigot, means a flourishing Dominica

What do you expect when its Parl Rep considers it beneath him to walk to a Minister’s office to lobby on behalf of his constituents? It was Linton who equated seeking an audience with a Minister to discuss issues that plague persons of the Marigot constituency to a “fish market!”

The underdevelopment of the Marigot constituency is a direct result of years of neglect and appalling representation by its leaders, not central government. Did Dayton Baptiste need central government to secure the help of the “internationally-based Dominica Charity Organization” to build and deliver houses to Maria-affected constituents? The problem is one of lazy and incompetent leadership. Constituencies where the leaders actually work on their behalf, not run to a radio or a camera to pretend to be doing something, but actually mobilize, organize, and fight on behalf of their constituents are the most developed and this is no surprise.

You never fail to disappoint. This is precisely what I thought the ovine supporters of this divisive ill-admonition would think. The government hogs all the country’s financial resources. It’s incumbent on the government to serve every citizen, and by extension, every constituency fairly. All workers pay taxes to help to keep the government afloat. Therefore, all people should benefit from the government’s resources. The government is not a political party. This is a misconception of the present regime and many electors. That’s the reason it’s important to elect magnanimous persons of integrity to govern the affairs of this country. This administration strives of interminable political tribalism which severely suffocates progress. Skerrit has proven himself incapable of thinking his way out of this stalemate. The DLP lacks the requisite vision to bring relief to a gravely suffering nation.

Lazy and incompetent leadership you dare to mention? Well, look no further than to your master Skerrit. Infact I personally would award him a few more attributes, namely corrupt and dishonest! What does that say for his supporters though, in particular the vocal ones like you??
