Housing and Water Resources Management Minister, Reginald Austrie, was involved in an accident on Wednesday morning.

Police are now investigating the accident which took place on the west coast road near Castaways.

The circumstances leading to the accident are not known and Austrie had to be assisted out of his vehicle.

It appears that Austrie or other passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

DNO is following this story and will provide further updates when they become available.

I was the first to post a comment on this story. It was not carried. When I read all that is being said here I wonder what was/is the reason for not carrying my comment. Look at the kind of partisan vitriol that has been posted on that story. I wonder why DNO chose not to carry my comment. It was a simple comment devoid of any political over tone. Just recognizing that the Minister and others were not hurt.

I am patiently waiting for the day when road safety and accident prevention will be the main topic of discussion in Dominica. We are so simple minded. When we claim that all accidents occur on the island because of driver-negligence, we leave out so many other variables such as road design.

That corner in Castaways along with the one a few miles up the road in Salisbury has been certifiable death-traps for years. I recall an accident in the 1980s when welders were called in to separate two vehicles that collided with each other. That accident caused several fatalities in that Salisbury corner. To this date, that corner remains a death trap. No significant change has occurred.

Why not change the surface material in these corners to concrete to improve traction? It was done on the Morne Prosper road.

There’s enough space on the Eastern end to reroute the road and remove the sharp corner. Let’s just wait for more accidents to occur and do nothing as usual.

Looks like Mr. Austrie lost his neck in the accident. Just maybe he need to start eating less cow meat so he can grow a new neck. God has given him a second chance through this wake up call. Hopefully e will take advantage of this second chance at life.

Glad that Mr. Austrie is okay; an angel was looking over him, but this minister needs to stop making fun of people with disability, because his life could have been changed in an instant. I remember when he made fund of the late Mr. Frampton and it was not nice what he said.

    DNO
Never have I read such vitriol directed at a person. Some of the commentators are insinuating that they would have been happy if Mr Austrie had perished in the accident. What is it about Mr Austrie that makes him such a figure of hate?

Is he really that odious? I do not know much about him, so I am trying to glean the reason why so many are so contemptuous of him.

Mr Austrie, I do not know you neither do I condone the vitriol directed at you, however you may want to reflect on some of these comments and perhaps try to make amends for your alleged wrongdoings?

A good road,no broken surface, but once again an example of Poor driving standards. No excuse regarding wet road or oil on surface .Drive the road each day,see so many examples of poor driving practice.Never a policeman in sight despite all those nice Chinese motorbikes we have.

    • Twissted
      January 15, 2015

Buss i totally disagree with you concerning this portion of road. The surface around that area, including the corner, IS different from the rest of the road. To me it looks like too much asphalt and not enough “stones” was used in that surface mixture . It offers a lot less traction than the normal mixture, making it more dangerous. You not driving fast and your tires squealing like you racing. So don’t talk about when it wet. So that area requires that you drive with Extra Caution because you could “drag” anytime. So most likely on that morning, Mr Austrie was driving a little too fast for that special corner ( not that he was racing) , tires lost traction on the smooth slippery surface, he lost control of the the vehicle and VOILA! There always have that sort of accident. Thank God no one was seriously hurt. I now hope that since this happened to Mr. Austrie himself in that area, that the “authorities” will now seriously consider resurfacing that portion of the highway. Bad…

Accidents occur at any time in various forms. We do not know when they will occur and to us. Those who make uncomplimentary comments are not intelligent to know that it could happen to them or anyone whom they know at any time, wherever they may be.
Some of you wish others ill as if nothing could happen to you. Do not be complacent that it could not happen to you and in a worst way.
People also get a stroke and aneurism. You have no idea what could happen to you in the future. Learn to be wise and in your thinking and comments. Your comments are not educating. No one can learn anything from them. They also project your ignorance, lack of education and compassion. They should not even be posted for they make no sense and serve no useful purpose. You are only projecting the evil in your hearts which are unChristian-like./ungodly Your day is coming.

Facts machine, Canada is as dangerous as to live in the same of America. I have walked with death many times in my life, beginning when I was thirteen years old in Wesley, I could have died their by an accident I brought on myself, I could have also drown when someone who knew I could not swim pushed me into a deep part of the river, which caused me to immediately learn to swim and save my own life. I am a man when I was nine years old the doctor told my parents the sickness I suffered from would either kill me or I will recover on my own, because there was no medication in the hospital for me they thought I had jaundice In Dominica, somebody literally try to murder me; I survived, all of that I wrote about in my book.

In Germany I got caught between to electronic shutting doors of a moving train: I almost got ran over by an RTD bus here in Los Angeles; in Antigua I was attacked beaten, blood was everywhere. I survived, I live at the moment among the creatures of the night, I am…

Facts machine here is the conclusion I could not get it all in because it is too long!

I am not afraid, the mafia abducted my daughter: I the mud boy from Wesley dealt with them, yet I am not afraid, your little talk can’t frighten me!

And hear this: one day I was travailing to Canada going towards Lansing in Michigan, I had to deviate towards Flint on to Port Huron, I doing about a hundred ten miles plus per hour; when I was about sixty feet from the transition when I saw it; I slowed down but not enough, I decided to proceed to the transition, anyway at over sixty miles per hour, there were cars, behind me, and ahead of me; and to my left. Once I made the decision to transcend I had to continue because one way or the other I was about to cause an accident. You will not believe this, neither god Elizabeth will, but I believe God saved my life that day when I felt as if a giant hand lifted the front end of my car, and set it down on transition ramp safely. So you can try to…

Some of the comments being made here are ridiculous, and demonstrate the worst in human kind. Here it is individuals, one of which is a minister in our country along with other people who do so much for this country had and accident and I sense joy coming from certain quarters. Mr. Austrie is not a perfect man but he works tirelessly to ensure that there is portable water through out our island. He is also the man behind the highly praise housing revolution which is credited for changing the lives of many; significantly and positively impacting the economy.
The other guy is also a hard working official in the ministry of housing and in his community. These are men who work for Dominica lets stop being like this. Politics is politics but here our humanity is under scrutiny.

Admin, I do not understand why you allow someone to call a professional Jackass, ridiculing me, however , by the same token removing a comment I made regarding the accident. If you are allowing someone to abuse his/her privilege by making such comments about me. It would be fair not to censor my comments so that every should see what I said, and judge as to wether this nobody has the right to call me a “professional jackass!

I am sure I am very much better educated than that charter: In case he wants to know my professional background, let it be known I am professionally an Electronic/Electrical Engineer retired; and one who can get involved in any electrical, or electronic business to make an honest living, apart from that I have a medical background which can afford me employment in the field of Health Science any day of the week, I am beginning to think I should not even bother to write comment on your site, if my opinions are censored!

    Be fair about!

Admin: We agree that an an error was made in allowing that comment about you. However, your comment, along with some others, was deemed to be inappropriate given the nature of the story. While DNO strives assiduously to accommodate freedom of expression, we reserve the right, depending on the nature of the story, to disallow comments that we consider to be in poor taste or which, in our view, may be exhibiting some form of inappropriateness.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      January 14, 2015

Anyway Admin, I appreciate you releasing that one in a timely manner, I do understand you position; with all thing unequal in our country some in your business do have to let the balance (the scale) determine what is appropriate, and what is not!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha!

I am sorry, but I cannot pretend, and be like a hypocrite; I write it as it flows, some people may get offended, but, I believe every one do have a right to their own opinions, and that is how it should work within a democracy, unless, someone is threatening, the life of another on your site, or their posting is loaded with profanities I see no reason why their comments should not be allowed.

      Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

    • January 15, 2015

“I am beginning to think I should not even bother to write comment on your site, if my opinions are censored” Telemaque

It would be too late for my sake, if your stop writing comments here, because you have used DNO to speak the most disgusting lies about me, time and time again; how often have you cursed my relationship with God, through your wicked and evil judgment; thereby cursing God Himself–and yes DNO printed them. So now your time has come, humble yourself and take it like a man.

That is what God wants you to do–stop quoting His Word, which you most definitely do not live by, or else you could not have spoken about me to the public so rude, so disgusting, and so deplorable–I gave you no reason for that sinful attitude. With God, true justice will always prevail–this is His Vengeance on my behalf–I thank Him.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        January 15, 2015

“thereby cursing God Himself–and yes DNO printed them. So now your time has come, humble yourself and take it like a man.”

Elizabeth, seriously, only now I am certain that something is wrong with you! I cannot believe you are saying that I curse God himself! Elizabeth, there is a part of scripture which advised us to fear God, who can destroy the soul. I am careful in anything pertaining to God. You on the other hand write all sort of nonsense retaliating it to the word of God and expect people like me who has studied the word and knows better to indulge you in your nonsense!

Elizabeth, you are not God; though you may think you are a god; in any event, you are far from being a Christian. And as for the lies you said I told on you; name one! You think I did not read where you were happy when the person curse me out? It takes a liar to know another. Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!

        • January 16, 2015

          Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!—Telemaque

That expression of yours above is the thing that will bring you face to face with your demise–you will call for mercy from the devil who is not motivating your bold face attitude and conduct. Continue with your ‘boldface” lying about God, with your claim “people like me who has studied the word and knows better”; you don’t even know that you are speaking blasphemy against God, each time you talking about studying His Word–because He knows you are lying, He has spoken this fact about you to me.

No one is cursing you, they are giving you the warnings which they receive from God to you, that warning is from several people here, on DNO, but you continue in your self conceited pride and pomposity–in response to them; claiming they are under you because of “education” and “profession” all of which is lies upon lies–your whole life is a disgusting lie, we all know it; except you, yourself.

          • January 16, 2015

I can’t believe that you are reading all of those scolding that DNO readers is speaking to you in writing and you simply, arrogantly, laugh it out. But all of those persons are right about what they say to you–that is a sign that you have no conscience–but that is where God connects to us, by His Holy Spirit–so what in hell are you talking about studying God’s Word–He is not with you!

For example here is what someone named Zuma said to you: “It’s a new year but you continue with your wrath.. You should ask the almighty for forgiveness”

That person has responded to your comments with that same theme time and again. I do not know who is Zuma, and I would also imagine he or she does not know me; but we have the same claim about your attitude. Jesus has assured us, saying: “Where two or three are gathered in My name, I am in their midst” So do you think that all of us here, who is saying the same thing about you, are wrong? I don’t think so!

You can’t mention that fact on DNO. All accidents are due in part to careless and reckless driving. Road conditions never seem to play any part in vehicular accidents in Dominica. That corner in particular, needs a redesign.

But, knowing how passive our engineers are, more accidents and unfortunately fatalities may occur before they even consider redesigning this portion of road.

Why do you believe I am full hate? If he had done something personal to me, then I might have a reason to hate him, nevertheless, I am not the kind to hate people, because hate breads stress, and stress dictates medical issues, such as strokes, and heart attack, and in most cases aneurysm in the brain!

For someone to hate another person, they have to wake up in the morning every day thinking about what the person have done to them, that remembering, and thinking causes the hater as much pain. The hated person feels no pain; and could care less about the hater’s hate, sometimes they are not even aware that they are hated by the person who hate them!

I am too smart, too educated, to civilized to involve myself in hate!

Are you serious?!!!!! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!!!! Cant even open your ignorant statement with a “Thank God nothing happened to him?”
Dominicans really has some screwed up mentalities due to politics. I saw the same type of ignorance when it was Mr. Linton now Mr. Austrie.
Bloody Hell…. Stop inviting death and evil into our country and when it comes start making stupid comments.

Anyways, Thank God no one was hurt. Drivers please be very, very careful on the roads especially when it’s raining.

Your comment is the only sensible one here. It breaks my heart to see how Dominicans want bad for eachother just because of a political event which took place December 8th. At the end of the day, we are all in it together to build but too much. A politician has a right to speak what he feels strengthens him and his party and people so give the man a chance. Blessings on everyone.

That is just a bunch of bull you just typed there. I m certain that supporters of UWP are in accidents everyday. Should they consider that as a wake up call also? Or is it only a wake up call when it is someone from Labour? If my memory serves me right, Mr. Linton was also in an accident a few months ago, so should I be saying the same thing to him? I guess what I am really trying to is that we need to stop politicizing everything. Its a motor vehicle accident. Wish him well and forget about the politics for a moment, and this goes for the Labour supporters also.

It also happened that you will take note and also of your words. Are you invincible that nothing could happen to you? Some of you are ignorant fools. You do not know what will happen to you in a wink of an eye, today, tonight, tomorrow or in a few weeks, months and years. People also die suddenly and in their sleep.

I live on the west coast and I know this road very well. I hope the Minister’s accident will put things in perspective for the Ministry of Public Works immediately.

You could not have said it any better… Just watch the oil on this piece of road. I remembered they ripped it off after it was done, I guess they added too much tar or something…the mix was surely faulty, the rest of the road is not like that. It is indeed scary. :(

The roads should not be constructed smoothly. It probably has no grip. This could be the cause of the problem. When it rains the situation is worst.
