Salisbury man’s mother says his behaviour was unusual

The mother of 37-year-old Keith Williams of Salisbury, who is believed to have died from ingesting a poisonous substance, said her son was mentally ill.

Eucila Bruno admitted that Williams’ behaviour was highly unusual days leading up to his death.

“He is a boy that love garden; he cannot stay two days without he go in his garden and for two weeks as if he wasn’t in the world again. He didn’t go garden for the two weeks,” Bruno told Dominica News Online.

Bruno said while she was lying in bed at about 11 p.m. on Friday night she heard knocking at her door, and on opening it saw Williams standing there soaked from the rain. “I asked him what happened to him… I [asked] ‘they beat you’? … His tongue seemed heavy,” she added.

One of her sons residing near her home told her that Williams appeared sick and he should be brought to the hospital to seek treatment. He was admitted to PMH that night, and succumbed on Sunday morning.

While up to press time, doctors had not informed Bruno the cause of her son’s death, she said he had told her he drank “something”.

“We go in the house [and] I didn’t see no poison, but he drank something… Keith tell me he drink something … he never tell me what. He never explain to me what,” the elderly woman recalled.

She said that people in the community also believed he ingested a poisonous substance.

“It seems to me he had a problem … like he was grieving,” she added, remembering his behavior before his death.

She said Williams had been admitted to the Psychiatric Unit of the PMH a few times. Bruno also said that he was not taking his medication consistently.

Nonetheless, her son has left good memories with her. “Keith was a good, good boy. January to December is Keith that bringing food for me…  anything I asked him to do for me he would do it … he made six beds of potato for me in July. Everybody that meet me telling me how Keith was a good person. Anyways I’ll miss Keith, I’ll miss him, but you know when people mentally ill what their mind telling them to do is that they will do,” the grieving mother said.

    @Educator

    You need to re-read your post and think of what you’re saying. A mentally ill person is sick in his/her BRAIN. Which means that his/her BRAIN does not function the way it should. Sickness in the brain (mentally ill) is no different from sickness in other parts of the body. In that, treatment and/or medication is needed. I believe that the young man was indeed mentally ill before he drank or was given “the drink”, because his mother said his behaviour changed. His mother knew him better than anybody else. I say all this to say, if he physically ingested “the drink” on his own, while being mentally ill, he would not go to hell based on this action as he was mentally ill and could not mentally process what he was about to do. The scriptures are not all black and white, a certain level of insight and wisdom is needed when dealing with things of this nature. Ask Jehovah for wisdom who gives freely to all who ask for it genuinely.

    A lass, poor mama. She is a wise old lady. She knows her son best and she was right when she said when a person is mentally ill and their mind tell them to do something they doing it eh. The poor man probably was depressed for a long time especially as he was not taking his medication. Anyway he is not going through turmoil anymore. I hope he is in a better place now. May his soul rest in peace. What a very sad story. We really need to monitor people with mental illness a little better so that they get the correct medicine and that they take it. We need to educate families too so that they can know what to look for in order to help them.

    Different things may have caused the guy to die. Because he is mentally ill, he may have followed some voices telling him to drink poison….(but where could he have gotten the poisonous substance from?). There are wicked people out there who may have known of his illness and had the nerve to put poison in either food or drink for him. Poor guy, may his soul rest in peace. Sincere condolences to the family especially the mother. Only God knows the real answer

    Oh boy! Not over any woman and not over losing vote. The only person that could tell the truth is gone. Assumptions are sometimes write but I believe that young man and God himself are the only ones that know the cause. I feel sympathy for his family.

    Boy gopwell is a bad thing to get er. I hope is not over woman you drank that er my boy because all tonight she .. with someone else, so your death would be point less. Now @Anonymous: when people take there own lives I feel no sympathy for them because that wasn’t how they were meant to die. Everyone feels like killing themselves now and then, even the rich people who have everything. The marigot death I feel sympathy for because someone else took the guys life but this there is no bit of sorrow in me.
