UPDATE: Suspected suicide in Pottersville

suicide scene1

Shock waves rocked the community of Pottersville on a wet Monday afternoon when news of a suspected suicide spread through the area.

Reports are Russell Carbon’s body was found by his girlfriend who came home for lunch and discovered him hanging in a bedroom.

It is reported that Carbon, who celebrated his birthday a few weeks ago, had also came home for lunch.

Dominica News Online understands that he was found still wearing the clothes with which he works in at a car rental company.

One woman, who referred to herself as “a very good friend” of the deceased, told Dominica News Online that she got to know him while working at the car rental company.

According to her she heard of the incident on a local radio station but the name was not disclosed.

“So I called my parents and they called somebody in the hospital and they said who it was, so I just came down to see what was going on,” she said. “Right now I am shocked and sad because that that is not the person that I would imagine would do something like that …the personality he had. I am really disappointed.”

She described Carbon as a “very upbeat,” and a “very jovial” person, adding that up to Friday night she was at her friend’s bar in the area and he was also in attendance “talking to us and giving us little jokes…”

Similar sentiments were heard all around the scene.

“He was the happiest man on earth,” another woman, who also knows him, was heard saying in disbelief.

The body was seen transported in a body bag and into a mini bus belonging to one of the funeral homes on island.

Police officers were also on the scene collecting evidence and keeping a large crowd at a safe distance from the green colored house that Carbon once called home.

Attempts at getting official word from Police PRO, ASP Claude Weekes, have been unsuccessful thus far.

Everyone keep asking Why, Why, Why! Who listen when he asked for help, what did they do when they realized he had those thoughts?

You all should be looking at yourselves, because he surely needed help and no one did!

We hope the truth comes out. We could speculate that he had enemies; also he may have come home from work and met someone inside or someone followed him inside and this occurred.
I expect the police will talk to his employer and co-workers. Did he have problems at work?
Whatever occurred, after the investigation and post-mortem are complete, the police authorities should inform D/cans. After all, everyone is curious to know what occurred.
Imagine reporting the news and then we hear/read nothing about it again. It is not fair to D/cans. The truth must be told.

My dear friend, u lived, u loved,u worked hard, dedicated, u were always the life of the party, u cared, encouraged, stood up for others, made us all laugh in bad situations. It was a pleasure working with you in the Hospitality Sector, and you were a great mentor to me; you taught me well and you will forever be missed my friend; I will always remembe your smile, your laughter and the encouragement u always gave me, I’m sorry I wasn’t always around to observe whether u were going thru any difficult time or moment… I pray god forgives you as he always does, and he alone knows what really happened, to your girlfriend and family, may the lord grace u all with forgiveness, peace, hope, and most importantly love. Rest in peace my brother in Christ, and thank you for being my friend, pray for me as I have always prayed for you…

For some reason, whenever somebody is found hanging it is immediately assumed that they took their own life. I swear if you suffocate someone and hang them, thats like the perfect crime in Dominica.

This is why a thorough examination should be conducted of the premises and the area it occurred including what was used to perform the hanging, for fingerprints. This should be done.
If he has a cellular or whatever technology, this should also be checked for possible relevant conversations.

    Still in disbelief.
It is a sad situation. Especially for his mom, who has to bury her son. We all need someone to talk to. Never believe we can do it all on our own. Help may just come from people we least expect it to. The one who smiles the most, laughs the hardest and never complains may also be the one struggling with the most problems. Depression is a silent killer indeed. Surround yourself with positiveness and keep nothing in that will drive you to think you are not worth life.
We all go through tasks in life, but is how we come out of it that is important. Russell made what ever it was get the better of him, and oh how we wish he had spoken to someone. But only he and God knows.
This is why we have to appreciate what we have before time makes us appreciate what we had. Hold our loved ones close. Make happy memories. Don’t make issues linger to another day. Life is a gift, Cherish it..
My condolences to his family, close friends and girlfriend.. May his soul R.I.P.

“Nothing shows on the outside, it’s whats on the inside that matters”. Nobody knew what was really going on inside despite what he put out, despite all the laughs, good times, friends, collegues, & family he had. It can happen to anyone, it can be me or you. Make sure to talk to Someone, it doesnt have to be more than one person, just One. Nothing you’re going through is worth loosing your life over. Life will always be your restart button as long as you have life you can let go or fix whatever your troubles are and start over. You will be missed by alot, but never forgotten by many. Sleep Well. Prayers to your family. & To his friends, be strong, he’s gone in the flesh but with you always.

DNO, you trying to make me believe that Russell killed himself? Awah! I doe believe that! I saw Russell and spoke to him early Monday morning at the PMH. He was there with some friends, jovial and friendly as ever. Of course, he could have been hiding his personal feelings, but then, he would have been doing this for the last few years because his behaviour on Monday morning was same as it has been for ever. If Russell took his own life, something bad happened at work on Monday morning. Barring this, I doe believe Russell killed himself.

Your comment is so senseless and harmful that I feel compelled to write: You seem to suggest that the government had something to do with this tragedy because he complained about them. Shame on you for bringing politics into such a tragic situation!!!! In my opinion, limited as it may be, your comment suggests to me that people like you will stop at nothing, just like the nut who entered a church in South Carolina during bible study!

There was a time when we had love and reverence for our fellow man, or fellow Dominican. What you said is a reflection of something that is dangerously wrong in Dominica. This particular question is not specifically related to you: it is a more general question about what is happening in the country. And I must therefore venture to ask? Is that where politics in Dominica has brought us? This new paradigm that has invaded the country must be given a new and fresh review, before we spiral into a situation from which no one will benefit.

  18. June 23, 2015

I am not sure if I know the deceased or his family, but it is always sad to hear about any death and especially sudden ones. A suicide and a murder are the worse deaths for families, with suicide making us feel hopeless and those close to the victim blaming themselves for not realizing something was wrong with a loved ones and we didn’t notice their pain.

But we shouldn’t blame ourselves because people tell us only what they want us to know. So family and loved ones should only feel the grief and pain that comes with the death of a loved one.

My sympathy to the family and friends of the young man and may his soul rest in peace.

There is a saying: “I thought I had no shoes until I saw a man with no toes.” This should indicate to us that there is always someone or a few people who have it worst than we do.
As of this moment we do not know if it is really a suicide case. We hope, in time the results will reveal how this occurred.

It is such a sad situation. What could have caused him to take such a drastic step to the unknown?
His family, girlfriend and a good friend knew him better than others. He may have divulged certain matters to them which will shed some light on why he took his life.
My heartfelt sympathy to all his loved ones. It is expected that you will grieve his sudden parting. May God surround you with his love, console you and strengthen you.
I pray, as he took the transition from life to death that God who knows all things and weighs out the reasons, had mercy on his soul.
Those who also speak of love and for one another, keep in mind the Love, Compassion, Mercy and Forgiveness of God with no exception.
Fellow D/cans please join me in saying an eternal rest for him and continue to do so, also for others departed:
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

Many would fabricate stories as to what personal issues they think he might have been going through but only God knows. It’s unfortunate we live in world where no one feels 100% assured in confiding in anyone about anything or everything anymore because “trust” and “respect” has been broken. Depression is a deadly but silent killer and so I urge parents to build strong and open relationships with their children. By that way, we can spot possible signs of depression and seek immediate assistance from professional. It’s one step we can take to reducing suicidal rates not only in Dominica or Caribbean but around the world. (by the said above, I am not indicating or implying the type of relationship that Mr.Carbon had with his mom nor am I judging his moms parenting) Just generally speaking. To the mom, and the entire family circle, may they be granted the strength to bear the pain. God will see you through.

You are so correct. As the saying, “You hit the nail right on the head.” It is the same in other countries as the one I presently reside in. One has to be extremely careful what is stated to others. There are more hypocrites and two-faced ones than there are those who could be trusted and who have respect for others. Know too, they rank among practicing religious people. Experience is a good teacher. Much more could be stated about that.

Yes, it is not a nice way to die. If he did commit suicide, he must have had a serious problem.
I am stating this as a Christian Catholic and from what I have heard and read through Catholic information. All may not be lost with his soul. We leave it to the mercy of God who judges hearts and who has the final say. We can say, “Lord, have mercy!”

In utter disbelief! It’s so painful when somebody that you call friend or even family commits suicide. You often wonder what was wrong, why couldn’t they come to you and talk… When you see people walking on the road you never really know what’s going on with them.

    • The Real Facts
      June 22, 2015

This is true. No one knows what people are going through. You know, they can’t go telling people of their problems or feel they should. Some people do not want to bother others.
How many are willing to listen anyway and patiently? How many can help or are able to help?
It is for this reason we should always be kind to others, even on this Website and though we may disagree on certain topics.
The thought is going through my mind, hopefully, through inspiration, based on what I previously stated: “Let me further inform you. Few Christians live up to Christianity, taking time out for others and making time for them, the same time God gives to them, to all of us, which really belongs to Him since we are on borrowed time.”

If he did, I hope he did not take it seriously that it led to his demise.
There is a time for everything. We must talk, discuss, argue and debate but after all is said and done, we must not eat, sleep and live it which means overdoing it, especially that we are not the government. The government has the greater burden. We have other burdens of life, our personal ones to worry about. We must not unduly stress out ourselves
If there is something we feel is too much for us to handle, we give it all to Our Lord Jesus Christ in prayer and leave it to Him He knows what to do and He knows when.
Having stated that, I thought of Mother – Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. When she had a problem she was unable to solve, she would say: “Jesus, you handle it.”
Trust in God. Know that He would be too happy to handle it and solve it. We should adopt it. It is amazing what peace one would feel.

“Circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this time.”—News article

We cannot know the reasons for a suicide, with the person already dead. Why? Because in today’s world no one is looking at the behavior of another–not even between parents and child–we personally, always think that we have the worse pain, ever.

A person in distress cannot hold that emotion within; many times he/she might want to talk to someone–such as a girlfriend. But we, those someone, are so busy pouring out our own silly little things on the person. already in distress, we can never notice that he or she is suffering, much, more than us.

That reason is, we, human beings, are LACKING in the most important part of existence–that part is “LOVE”. But who can survive without “Love”? No one! Because Love is Life, itself, in us–suicide or not we are still dead without Love–Life from God.

Nonetheless, this is a sad situation, at 30 years old, this is too young to die!

So we come before your face,
        Asking for your grace
Bring your people to a state of kingdom life
        Restore your church again.

        Touch your people once again
With your precious holy hands we pray
Let your kingdom shine upon this earth
        Through a living glorious church
Not for temporary needs but to restore authority and power
Like a mighty rushing wind blowing
        Touch your people once again.

Google the rest. It is also on U Tube.
