PM Skerrit expresses condolences while urging caution this rainy season

Monday morning's landslide. * Photo submitted

(DNO) Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has described as unfortunate a landslide in the village of San Sauveur on Monday that claimed the life of three individuals and injured two others.

Skerrit and other government officials visited that community on Monday when they heard about the tragedy.

He said people there were looking forward to celebrating when the landslide occurred.

According to Skerrit, several persons including the ambulance, fire officials and other members of the community played their part to ensure the roads were cleared and those who needed assistance received it.

He said as Dominica gets set to face the rainy season and the entire nation needs to be vigilant.

“Dominica is prone to landslides and we need to be very careful,” he said

Harrison Stout, 51, Jael Stout, 5, and Flora Stoute, 75, were pulled from the rubble several hours after their home was completely covered by the landslide.

To my Aunty Flore; to my cousins Jael and Cecang

May the roads rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields
    And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

I cant believe that the police would stop the ppl from digging to look for their love ones
how stupid could these pp are, sometime i wonder if this guys have any education or a high school diploma i mean come on.they stop these ppl so that they could wait for the baco to come all the way from portsmouth ,i mean what are their chances of survival after all that time

My condolences goes out to the family ,— The Bible teaches that someday ” dead in christ ” are going to be resurrected , at which we shall be given new bodies . We don’t know exactly what these new bodies will be , except that they will be spiritual, permanent, and glorious; ”And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven ” ( 1 corinthians 15: 49 , niv ) .” But we know that when [Christ ] is revealed , we shall be like Him , for we shall see Him as He is ” (1 john 3: 2 also 1 corinthians 15 : 51– 58 ) . Thank God we have hope beyond the grave .

I am so saddened by this tragedy. Just last month I was in the area. Subjected to correction, but i think it’s just about a year that a member of that same household fell from a tree and died. My condolences to the family and community. To the folks in the immediate vicinity, please get out of there, and relocate to a safer area.

It was a very sad day for the community of San Sauver and Dominica on a whole. I must compliment DBS radio and especially Curtis Mathew the lone reporter on the scene to report on what was happening to keep the people of Dominica and the rest of the world informed. It was sure good broadcasting. It sure was a relief when he reported that the bodies one by one were recovered. He did it with dignity and pride and respect for the dead.
No one knows our hour. It was really a sad tragedy and I pray that God give the other living relatives the strength to move on. To the young boy’s mother my deepest symphathy. As a Dominican you are in my prayers.
Just hold hold on have faith in the Lord.

Sympathies to all the rest of the family and the people of San Sauveur in their time of so much pain. However, the article should help us who were not at the site to virtually see the efforts of the fire and ambulance department. police and the many community persons who worked tirelessly in that tragic accident. People always come first, especially when they go that extra mile in assisting their community brothers and sisters. Certainly not enough Kudos for the local people there.

facts of life and all those who are putting politics in this are just being ridiculous. where is politics coming in – in this situation. people are sorry and are sympathizing and are still in shock, it is just sad to read what people are writing about politics. the PM nor the politicians did not let that happen so what are you people talking about. you mean our politicians are so mean and bad that they would wish that on somebody? that’s the impression some of you writers are giving and it is just unbearable. come one people and get constructive. we are not children here… be adults people. stamp out the negativity!

on another note, i would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to the family and villagers and all those who are affected by this incident one way or another.

May God bless and comfort you all!

the Almighty is looking and following the works of the land. Yes this was an incident but look at the

    May 25, 2010

This has been tough for the Stoute family, and the entire San Sauveur community. Nonetheless, we are comforted knowing that we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. For we know in whom we believeth and we are persuaded that He is able. So we mourn but not as those with no hope for we know that “the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words”. May the family and community find strength and comfort in God’s Word.

The Stoute family and Toussaint family in Houston send their condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

my prayers r with u my pips…..for some moments in life there are no words…we just have to place all in the lords hand…

..If tears could build a stairway,
    And memories a lane,
I’d walk right up to Heaven
    And bring you’ll home again.
Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy…

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

I know that the God of all comfort will comfort your hearts in such a time like this. This is one of the times when we ask “Why?” Take comfort in the verse which says “And we know that ALL thing work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Even in the midst of tradegy, God speaks and his divine will becomes perfect. God is in control.

my condolences to you and your family Elz…. this is a tragedy but as we know God has plans for each and everyone of us.. as much as they’re gone together, and as much tears fill the eyes of everyone who are some way connected, lets continue to pray to God and thank him for the many blessings we receive. This is still so sad even if i don’t know the victims, but i know some of the relatives. Please accept my sympathies. In life sometimes we can only pray for continued guidance and strength to live tomorrow. May their souls rest in peace

I have followed this news on the internet – via DBS and Google. Much sadness was felt on hearing the deaths, as I was praying someone would be found alive and wept when the bodies were discovered.

What was truly touching is how the people worked together throughout to speed recovery. As Dominicans what happens to one affects all.

Many condolences for the family of the deceased.

I really pray God they survive. These days with the heavy rains we must all be careful and pay attention. Especially bus drivers and people travelling into the city from areas like Marigot going through Concord, and under cliffs. After the rains the land becomes saturated and unstable so anything is possible. I pray God they make it out alive, and it really depends on many circumstances like the amount of air in the house at the time, where they were, and how long the dig out took. So I pray for the families involved, and hopefully we will have no victims but survivors. God Bless.

I am very sorry to hear such a tragedy. The government must look very closely at the cliffs/mointains in these areas. Why don’t they (the government) give some french contractors a job to either blast these cliffs/mountains or seal them in such a way to avoid such disasters from occuring.
I wish the families and friends of the victims the best.

man u think the geology of dominica can handle that im a royal engineer with the british army and i am from dominica and i can tell u blasting only gonna make things worse in dca plus shorring up the cliffs is next to impossible cause there is nothign to blot the netting onto cause its all loose material in dca u may have forgotten that dominica is a very young island in gelogical terms and the soil is not consolidated as in martinique to the south
the only way t limit slides on the island is by a process called step cutting and that till leave alot of the land above our roads on my beautiful island deforested for years to come

      May 27, 2010

My condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

I think the government and people of Dominica need to take this threat a little more seriously. One way is restricting where people can build.
Soil is very heavy – about twice the density of water and it can cause a lot of destruction in the case of slides. We also have to be careful during those rescue missions to protect the rescuers. Typically here in the US there are very strict codes when entering trench – whether in construction or to rescue someone. The soil does not have to cover an individual completely to kill that person- soil covering someone up to their waist can restrict blood flow and kill a person eventually.

Looking at that slide, it looked like one that did not give much warning- either a debris flow a mud flow – very dangerous. Some other slides are much more slow moving and can reach a tipping point if rain or earthquake or other factors trigger it. However, we can still predict the likelihood of a slide prior to those traffic event. Water is a big factor that triggers a slide. And people in vulnerable areas should relocate, at least temporary, in case of intense rain – treat it like how you treat hurricane – move to safer area.

There are several other ways to stabilize the land but some are very costly. Dominica terrain is very difficult. Maybe the cheapest is terracing and vegetation,, but in some cases to avoid tragedy we just need to avoid living in certain places.
