DNO can now confirm that a young man drowned in Trafalgar on Thursday afternoon.
He has been identified by police as Dravid Johnson of Pont Casse.
He is the son of Dominica’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Johnson.
Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said the incident occurred around 3:10 pm on August 29.
He said Dravid was among a group of eleven students who were bathing in the Trafalgar River when he submerged and disappeared.
The fire and ambulance services were notified and upon their arrival, the fire officers recovered the body of Dravid from the river in an unconscious state.
The body was transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital and Accident and Emergency Department where it was examined and pronounced dead by a medical practitioner.
A coroner’s inquest will be convened and a post mortem will follow, according to Inspector Carbon.
My deepest condolences to the family. Only when one experiences a loss can they tell of the feelings. However, credit must be given to people when it is due. Not once did they mention the men of the village who were diving for the body. Did the fire officers go in the water?

Phew! I know the father, mother and sister as well as several relatives on both maternal and paternal sides. I am lost for words! I am a father too with four beautiful children and I know I would end up by Benji if I suffered such lost as David is suffering right now. I feel your pain, parents and sister! I can hardly imagine the first night at home without Dravid.
My wife is from Trafalgar and I lived there for four years, so I am well knowledgable of that river stretch where it is claimed Dravid drowned. It is actually a gorge and has been named “Narrow Lane.” The river flows between the vertical rocks and has etched quite some depth. When I was taken there by my wife several years ago, I refused to enter the water, though I am an above-average swimmer. When she revealed that the village legend is that no one had ever touched the bottom of the river at Narrow Lane, I knew it was time to say bye-bye to that spot and return home.
I have adopted a risk assessment strategy for bathing in seas and rivers. I do not enter any sea or river till locals from the area enter and I am convinved all is well. So until locals enter the water, swim about and return safely, I will stand on a rock or beach and enjoy the view.

really really sad..i got teens as well and it hurts my heart cause i know my children like to explore but we just do not know when and how these things will happen i just pray and ask God to guide and protect them because we cannot b with them at every spot.
I think swimming is skill that should be thought at all elementary schools. We are surrounded by water and have so many rivers yet still very few of our people can swim. This is a life saving skill – the education ministry should begin looking at that seriously.

Parents must take more control over their kids especially teenagers. This area where the child died is very deep and scary to bathe. The kid from the village that took him there did he consult with his parents that he was taking his friends to that area called Naroline so the parents could advise that child so he could be more cocious of the place he was taking his friends. So many more appropriate places he could have taken those kids for a nice river bath without endangering any one life such as the Trafalgars falls etc. To many times these teenagers have their own way without the imput of the parents. Question like where are you going to? Is this place safe enough? contacting the other parents and informing them of the engagement that your kids will be having with their/your kids. Who knows many life’s could be saved. I believed if the parents not specifically the Johnson family but the parents of the kid that endagered the life’s of the kids and caused a life to be lost creating so much pain for so many, they would advised that kid.

Person who is lost, I’m assuming that initially little info was available. since then the young man’s body has been recovered and medical assessment done. as for falling or not, it is possible that an investigation is ungoing and they are questioning those who were there. i understand your initial panic comments, but, please see the updates.
