UPDATE: Man injured in accident has died

Luke being placed in the ambulance

A man who was rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital following a vehicular accident which occurred on the road to Soufriere has died.

Canefield resident, Laplee Luke, died at approximately 5:30 am on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 4:00 am on Saturday August 31st , 2013.

“We were coming down to Soufriere and the vehicle slide and hit the left side of the road and next thing I know we upside down in the car,” stated 23 year old Marshall Paul of Pottersville, an occupant of the vehicle.

He stated that the vehicle left the road and flipped approximately five times, before coming to a stop in a 15 to 30 foot ditch on the right side of the road.

“My padna was outside the vehicle already as he was on the passenger side next to the driver, but I was at the back and my hand was trapped, so I had to force my way out,” Paul added.

23-year-old Donnie Defoe of Canefield who sat next to the driver, Laplee Luke, said when the vehicle stopped and he looked at his friend Luke, it seemed as if his neck was broken as it was turned backwards which frightened him. He said Luke also had difficulty breathing.

“We pulled him out of the vehicle but we could not carry him up the hill as it was too steep, as all three of us kept sliding back down, so we left him, called the ambulance then made our way up,” Defoe explained.

He noted that the driver was driving at a reasonable speed but the wet road may be what caused the vehicle to slide, as it was raining lightly at the time of the accident.

Defoe said what was frustrating is that a number of buses passed without stopping to offer any assistance other than instructing them to call the ambulance.

The young men’s clothing was stained with blood but they suffered only minor scrapes and bruises and say they are thankful to be alive after witnessing their lives flash before their eyes.

However Luke was not as lucky as his two friends and had to be stabilized on a stretcher then pulled out of the ditch by fire and ambulance personnel, before he was placed into the waiting ambulance.

The car the young men were traveling in, was a grey Mitsubishi.

To everyone bashing the bus drivers; I know that unless you are a trained emergency responder you can do more harm that good when you try to ‘assist’ in am accident. The best thing is to call the professionals and wait for them to do what they are trained to do. Even his friends moving him and trying to head up the hill with him could have agravated his injuries more especially if his neck and spine where injured in the accident.

The government must make it mandatory to use seat belts; also an airbag in front of the wheel. In the event of a collision the bag would activate and protect the chest.

one day we all will learn to wear our seatbelts which coud have would have saved the brother, but nooo we do not respect seatbelts which is the law.

Not an excuse for the bus drivers who did not stop. However with the way people being hijacked these day wonder if that is why no one wants to stop to pick up anyone these days. Dont be to quick to judge. God’s merci on us all

I am sorry to hear of the passing of the young man. But fellow Dominicans I am admonishing you to wear seatbelts even if you are in the backseat. I do not know whether the guy had seatbelt or not but seatbelts have proven to save lives, especially in roll-over situations like this. Better be safe than sorry.

I am not saying they could saved his life, but if these bus drivers had given a helping hand who knows he could have lived a couple hours longer. This is real bad I doubt they had an emergency for not stopping. Sorry to sad but these bus drivers might need help one day you never know. They refused to assist friends in helping their dying friend whereas maybe rushing to made money.

I`m seat at work this Sunday morning with tears in my eyes after reading about this sad and unfortunate accident. I don’t know any of the victims but was saddened at the fact that one of the victims stated “what was frustrating is that a number of buses passed without stopping to offer any assistance other than instructing them to call the ambulance”. Unless these bus drivers were dealing with an emergency themselves, it hurts to know they are fellow Dominicans. Why would you pass by an accident on such a remote road without offering assistance? I am not saying that Laplee Luke would have survived, but I hope this stays on their conscience not knowing if their intervention would have made a difference. I hope they are never in the same situation, whoever they may be.

Buses passed and no one stopped to help what kind of bus drivers with on courtesy that’s a real shame. They should be able to help others on the road in time of need. I recalled the car I was travelling went into a gutter in Dosdane when we ask a bus driver for help he said he was busy, it was disgusting to see how our drivers behave.

Help them to do what ? They should not have moved Him in the first place if they noticed He had a serious neck injury .trying to get Him up the steep slope and sliding back several times with him only aggravates the injury,Would have been better to just wait for the Fire and Ambulance service .The Bus Drivers gave them the best advice of course they could have stayed with them and given them some kind of support by reassuring them that the Ambulance was actually on the way for their Friend!

They should not have moved Him in the first place if they noticed He had a serious neck injury.

I agree completely. In sports injuries and accidents the victim should not be moved unless by trained professionals. Nonetheless, the bus drivers could have stayed a while and at least offered some comfort and prayed with them. That would have been the right thing to do.

FYI the slope was muddy and sliding downwards. They did not land at the bottom of the cliff but the bumper got stuck in the mud. There was a chance of them and the vehicle sliding further.

My condolences to the family.. Why would’nt the bus drivers stop to help? My goodness, we are getting selfish these days. We must be careful, buses have accidents all the time. Perhaps they did not want to get their pretty buses soiled.. We also need to get more members of the public to learn some basic first aid; that could be a big help in times like these.

While what you’re saying is accurate, you can look at it from the perspective of the bus drivers. It could have been a fake cry for help with the intention to rob the bus drivers. With the level of robberies and crime/violence, persons have to be so wary these days about whom they extend help to.
