UPDATE: 12-y-o girl killed in bus accident; 11 injured (SEE PHOTOS)

A 12-year-old girl, Keyana Emmanuel, died and 11 others injured after a taxi bus overturned on a public road in William, Pond Casse (Tarish Pitt) at about 9:30 Saturday morning.

Keyana was pronounced dead on the scene by a Dr. Jacob from the Castle Bruce District, Acting Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes told Dominica News Online.

Weekes added that two persons have been admitted at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Reports are that the Nissan bus (HE262), plying the Marigot to Roseau route, overturned. Keyana was thrown from the bus during the process.

Weekes said the driver seemed to have lost control of the vehicle after it “slipped” and flipped two to three times.

When Dominica News Online arrived on the scene, police and fire personnel were present while curious onlookers parked their vehicles to take a peak at the grisly scene.

The girl’s body was seen on the side of the road, covered, in the bushes, about 20-30 metres behind the bus, which rested on its top.

When asked if any charges will be brought against the driver, Benoit R. Guiste of Sam’s Gutter, Marigot, Weekes said investigations are in its early stages.

He said a coroner’s inquest and post mortem – normal procedures in such cases – will convene soon to determine if any charges will be laid. Weekes said the bus is owned by Paul Guiste of Concord. He was unable to say immediately if Paul and Benoit are related.

teach individuals to do CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR), to save life instead of standing observing until the ambulance or a trained person arrives. assess the situation, maintain a safe environment, and place in a recovery position if patient is breathing if not start CPR, 30 compressions to 2 breaths observe patient, keep them warm

    Deal with the immediate danger.

Fire and further collisions are the immediate dangers after a crash.

Any vehicles involved in the crash should be approached with care. If it is safe to do so, turn off all engines, and alert oncoming traffic to the danger ahead.

Do not allow anyone to smoke; there could be inflammable substances present.

Get Assistance. Attempt to get the help of any bystanders.

Ensure the relevant emergency services are called as soon as possible. They will require the precise location and the number of casualties and vehicles involved in the incident.

    Help for those involved.

Do not move casualties who remain in their vehicles, unless they are in danger by doing so. Never remove a motorcyclist’s helmet unless deemed necessary.

Casualties may be suffering from shock so must not be given food or drink.

Try and keep them warm and comfortable but avoid unnecessary movements.

Try not to leave them alone they may wander off, and give them plenty of reassurance.

Provide the necessary emergency care. Before caring for the casualties you should ensure you are not putting yourself in danger.

Is the casualty responsive, ask them questions and if necessary shake them gently by the shoulders. Ensure normal breathing and that their airways are not blocked and are kept open.

If necessary place a hand on their forehead and two fingers from the other hand under the chin and gently tilt the head backwards.

Check to ensure breathing normally for up to 10 seconds if necessary. If they are not breathing correctly compressions should be administered to keep circulation going. This is done by placing both hands in the centre of the chest and pressing down approximately 4cm to 5cm at a rate of about 100 compressions per minute. This should be done for about 30 compressions then the head should be tilted back gently, the casualty’s nostrils pinched together and two breaths of about one second administered with your mouth over theirs. Then repeat the process until normal breathing resumes.

If the casualty is a child it may only be necessary to use one hand for the compressions, and use gentler breaths for small children.

If the casualty is breathing but unconscious, place them in the recovery position if safe to do so until medical assistance arrives.

If there is bleeding, first check if there are any objects in the wound.

If the wound is clear of objects apply firm pressure over the wound. If there are objects embedded in the wound do not press them, and build up padding around the object. If a first aid kit is available fasten a pad to the wound with a bandage.

If not using the cleanest materials available fasten a makeshift pad to the wound with cloth, this may mean ripping up clothing.

If limbs are not broken but are bleeding, lift them above the level of the heart to reduce blood loss. If blood circulation is restricted for more than a short length of time long-term injuries could occur.

If there are burns do not remove anything that may be stuck to it. The burn should be cooled if possible by dousing it in clean cold water for at least 10 minutes.

The Police used to patrol the roads in the city and its surroundings giving people summonses for various vehicular offences including overload, smooth tyres etc.
Im not certain whether this is still on but please if not, bring it on. It will save a lot of lives and save the Police from unnecessary embarassment and thus commendation.
Come on people. Dominica is nice so lets put reality in perspective.

    Perfect formula for an accident

Smooth tires, speeding on wet road = Fatal Accident.

So tell me,that bus driver dont have comon sense to know that the road is wet so he must exercise precaution? On top of that the bus tires Pas Bon and the road smooth……………………

Balding tires is a serious issue in Dominica. The past few times I was home, I commneted to the car rental company that I used that the tires on the rental cars were no good. Since then I have used two other rental companies and have gotten vehicles with very little to no tread on the tires. This is very dangerous especially on the narrow tracks that we use as highways. There seems to be a laid back attitude when it comes to tires in Dominica. We need to somehow enforce vehicle inspections in Dominica. Loosing lives over this is unacceptable. There has to be a change, please let this young lady’s death result in a meaningful change for the good of all.

i dont think that all of the blame for the death of d lil girl and the major injuries should go to the bus driver. dont get me wrong. although he plays a major roll in keepin the passengers safe but there is someting no alot of things on every vehicle to help prevent the lost of ppl lives! EVERY PASSENGER ON THE BUS HAS ACCESS TO A SEAT BELT! except to those on the 2 jumper seats but a seat belt isn’t a difficult thing to install. if persons were wearing dem they would hav escaped with minor to no injuries in that particular accident. BUT the law that every passenger should wear a seat belt is not enforced down here so ppl neglect dem some dont even kno that vehicles are equipped with dem. and again cause the law is not enforced some stupid bus drivers strap the seat belt behind the seats….so dont go cryin down on only the bus driver….the law has a big part to pay in the child loosin her life. most of us only call on the lord in times of need…askin him y didn;t he stop it from happenin. but “THE LORD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP DEM SELVES….IF ONLY THEY WERE WEARIN THEIR SEAT BELTS THEY WOULD HAV ESCAPED IF ONLY MINOR INJURIES!!!!” again dont take me wrong i’m not sayin that a seat belt is sure to save a life…but in this accident it should would have no doubt about it. the lil girl is my classmate’s sista i feel for dem…also the driver is a very good friend of mine i feel for him too even if he if he really made a very foolish decision on that day. i jus hopin for d best: dat those injured would heal up quick, well d lil girl can;t come back :( , i hope d law is enforced after this and that ppl dont make the same mistakes, also i hope he doesn;t get to spend the rest of his life in jail…

      May 10, 2011

@marigot the girl is his sister’s classmate he is expressing his sympathy as well…nobody is saying the driver is not responsible…of course he is responsible..i agree with u @underwieght about the seat belts and i understand where u coming from…i just read previously that he was on his cell phone as well..if that is true then the cell phone law needs to be enforced as well if we even have a law about that…u cant be driving a bus with bald tires full of passengers speeding and on a cell phone and according to @marigot he wasnt supposed to pick up passengers…he made a terrible mistake!! he made some bad decisions yes and nothing about that accident cud have been avoided unless he didnt make those bad decisions but as commuters (who supposed to trust our drivers) we shud also prepare ourselves for these “bad decisions”.. BUCKLE UP…precaution is better than cure..RIP little girl God has a reason for everything and i HOPE her family finds comfort or “justice” from the outcome of this situation cuz death/loss is NEVER easy..

Am I the only one who notice that the bus tires are bald. How do you not expect something like that to happen on a wet road with tires in such a condition. The driver could have noticed that he needed to change them. Now a young life is lost and he does not have a vehicle to make a daily bread. Dominican we need to wake up. Police officers you all stop the wrong set of people on the road to give tickets. These are the things you all should be looking for.
Sincere sympathy goes out to the young girl’s family…

Generally those searches are randomly conducted. This occurs in every country of the world. Same as when drivers are impaired and some people have illegal drugs on them – in their vehicle. There are times those who should have been searched are the ones who escape and sadly so. You should not blame the Police and not at all times. Police departments consistently issue warnings and directives and some drivers choose to ignore them. There are some careful drivers and there are some negligent ones.
Consider what would happen if the Police were to stop every vehicle. There are those who will complain about the slow-down and delays. I do think with the man/woman power, it will be impossible to stop every vehicle.
Vehicle owners and drivers must be responsible and must be held accountable for not having their vehicles-road worthy including their demeanor as drivers, driving too fast and lack of road courtesy and consideration.
I do wish that all drivers would observe this all-too important road consideration. Many lives would be saved and there would be no injuries.
Time for a change drivers, wherever you may reside. Preserve lives and health. We are all each other’s keepers.
If you think that God will not hold those reckless drivers accountable which results in death and injury, think again. It is a serious matter.
God will hold us accountable for every careless word, every bad advice given, every wrongful criticism and against the religious beliefs and practices of others, swearing and insulting them and calling them derogatory names, be it on this Website and whatever other wrong we have done, all of which are against His Ten Commandments. There are those who do not give this a thought. Mortal and spiritual enlightenment are required and necessary to comprehend this.

Here is the real story: The driver of the bus at the time is NOT the owner of the vehicle. He was asked to take the bus down to town to so that the bus could get a TIRE CHANGE. Thus the reason why the bus had BALD HEAD TIRES. He had no right to pickup any passengers because i(most likely) may not have been certified to drive the bus(c class license) OR on the insurance of permitted drivers for that particular vehicle. ((many people talk about that place as a problem and accident prone area. That’s just nonesense. Every where in Dominica and every road on the island is accident prone. Its how you drive the vehicle. Understanding the road conditions(at the time), understanding the limitations of the vehicle and knowing your LIMIT or LIMITATIONS when it comes to driving)).There should be a law/insurance policy that condemns him as breaking the law and thus he should/has to face a Magistrate.

But you know Dominica already. Nothing here is taken seriously. DUIs walk away free after having accidents – some fatal, and they just go free. The standard of law in this country is so LAX, the only law that is being enforced is the drug law(it might seem).

The Government, as he sole elected PARENTS/SUPERVISORS/LEADERS of the country, supposed to have law an order on the top of the list…with a budget to facilitate that – a budget that allows them to have more patrol cars, more patol officers, more (keep the peace) persons. Law supposed to be the absolute priority in every country. Not just for drugs only but in general.

My condolences to the family and friends of the young lady. You are in God’s Memory Dear. Grace Mercy and Peace to all!

This is so sad, the passing of 12-year old Keyana due to an accident.
My heart goes out to her grieving family. Please accept my condolence. It is not an easy time for them that their loved one has passed on and at a very young age. What makes it more difficult to accept is that she was not sick and the manner in which her passing occurred.
As the adage and consolation, “God protects us from something worst than death.”
Be consoled that Keyana is resting in God’s glory and peace. She was young and no doubt innocent, a young healthy child who had a bright future ahead of her. It is sad though that she did not have the opportunity to grow to adulthood. All we should consider as sad as her passing is, a loving God knows best.
We were born into this world. We know not how long we will live and what will happen to us as we grow up and as we go about our business and whether we will return safely.
I am one who fear accidents and getting into one. Whenever I am leaving to go out, I ask the Lord to protect me and keep me safely. When I return I thank Him. He holds the key to life and death and He protects us from every possible bad element.
Recently a few of us were on our way to a funeral. As we approached an intersection on the Toronto highway, we noticed that the traffic was heavy. Then the fire truck and ambulance drove by to the scene of an accident which had just occurred. This slowed-down traffic both ways. This delayed us a bit but we were not late.
As we got closer we noted a small car had overturned and thought the person may have died or injured; fortunate for the person or the people in the vehicle if they were not injured.
Accidents occur on all sorts of roads. The problem is, more often than not, it could be due to speeding. Other than speeding, it could be due to carelessness, other drivers or another driver trying to overtake. Some of them are always in a rush and will not give pedestrians right of way at the lights in the case of in a big city.
Drivers must consider that they are transporting human beings, precious lives. They should always be alert and keep their eyes on the road.
Hopefully the vehicles are in good condition.
They must drive on their side of the road.
They must also learn from other accidents and drive cautiously. How many of them pay heed and keep this in mind? I suppose that some of them soon forget about what occurred to other vehicles and passengers.
As one of those who comment stated, some vehicles are recalled. I hear this frequently on the news. Who knows if those vehicles are not sold to places as Dominica, where vehicle inspection could be lax or that there are not appropriate procedures or the means of inspecting them for road safety.
Recall the lady who lost her leg (or legs) in an accident last year. Recently she crossed my mind. I wonder how she is doing. We read of accidents and injuries but later hear nothing on how the injured are doing
Other accidents have occurred in Dominica which resulted in deaths and injuries.
At this point we do not know what really occurred to cause this terrible accident which resulted in the death of this young child and injuries to other passengers. We hope soon enough the results will be released.
My advice at all times is: Drivers, be careful. Observe road courtesy. Keep in mind the safety of your passengers and also yourself – all precious lives. Lives lost can never be regained. In addition, think of injuries which accidents can cause.
Drive safely. Do not speed. You will arrive at your destination and back in time and all in one piece.
The government should look into the possibility of having signs installed on the roads pertaining to speeding and speed limits.
Life is worth living and safely, free from accidents and other incidents. We must treasure our lives and that of others.
May God bless and sustain Keyana’s family at this time and during their period of mourning.
Your loved one has passed on but never to be forgotten. Only time heals the pain as memories of her remain in your minds and hearts.

Praise the Lord, it was just one death. It could have been more people. According to what I saw, the driver is totally at fault. The bus have four tyres to run on. Out of the four, three have wire which means they are passed “NOT GOOD.” I think the police should lock up the driver. U cannot run a passenger bus under such conditions. Plus i heard he had no class “C” license. Lock him up………………….Yesterday was mother’s day… Think of the child’s mom.

I am saddened that a young lady lost her life and I express my heartfelt sympathies to her family at this time. I also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured in this accident.

I think we seriously need to consider speed limits on our small roads. They are wet more often than not and when wet they are slippery. The speeds that some drivers travel on these roads are much too fast for the conditions.

Bus drivers in particular with passengers who put their trust in them to transport then safely to their destinations need to exercise more restraint from speeding and slow down.

I understand the temptation for making as much money as one can to first repay the loan for the Bus and also support one self and family, but a young girl losing her life due to speeding and careless driving is not worth the extra money.

I implore the police and government to look at these avenues to encourage the drivers to slow down and travel at better or more manageable speeds.

I feel badly for the relatives of the deceased and for the people who were injured. We are blaming the driver even before the accident report comes out. Maybe we should investigate where some of the car dealership get their vehicles from. often times, most of the vehicles we see on the road have been recalled by other countries because of faulty breaks and loads of other stuff that are wrong with them.
The dealers get them at such a cheap rate that they don’t bother to ask questions. All they see is dollar signs.

I understand that the driver was on his cell phone while driving. Can anyone confirm if this is true. And if it is then the driver is definitely to be blaned. He would have had more control of the bus had he not been on the phone. Again I say if the reports are true.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. We can never predict tragedy but we can be prepared to meet our God.

To the law makers of this country and the politicians who turn a blind eye at things which do not affect them, please dig into your hearts and find a conscience. Instead of wasting time quarrelling in parliament, please amend the laws governing bus drivers. We would like bus drivers to obtain a special license to drive a bus. We would like bus drivers to do a mandatory 6 month training. We would like all passanger buses to be regularly inspected. We would like buses to be impounded when they do not observe the rules. Unless we become serious, bus drivers will never adhere to the laws. We need to have a special speed limit for bus drivers.

Fix it before we lose more innocent lives.

You have made the best comment ever.

It is entirely too easy for any Tom, Dick or Harry to just purchase a bus, procure a class C drivers license and start to collect passengers on the streets of Dominica. A lot of those buses are not even properly insured and the person driving it sometimes are not authorized to drive the vehicle.

I refuse to travel on some buses from my community because their buses are not up to standard and they are they ones who have the most attitude.

I will have to conclude that my country does not care about its citizens. For a bus driver to transport tourists he has to join the association, undergo certain training and checks, but that is too much to do for locals to ensure our safety? That is why people can say what they want but when I am on a bus I will open my mouth and talk when I see a bus driver doing nonsense on the street and playing his “Need for Speed” game with my life.

Dominica law. get a speed limit AND PUNISH THE ‘ROAD HOGS’ THEN THE SPEEDING WILL BE UNDER CONTROL. A lot of the drivers in Dominica are illeterate and will not pass a drivers test so most of them drive without licence and the gov’t does not care. Wake up Dominicans, Wake up Government of Dominica

As I look at the pictures of this unfortunate accident, I couldn’t help noticing the state of the tires, completely bald. I suspect this was a contributing factor.
I know things are tough for people running their vehicles, but it’s about time the government put saving lives first by forcing drivers to have tires that are safe. In the wet there is no way you can get grip on the road with these tires.

There is over 180 comments here, as I am writing this one. So it is possible that some people could had have addressed what I am about to point out, maybe not. So here is what I am going to say.

Last week as I read about the developments of the road from Roseau to Portsmouth, I noticed that some people complained, concluding that the structure of the road was flawed–still too bumpy.

Well I travelled a lot during my work, here in Canada. Of course, Cananda is one among the countries with well structured roads. But there is one thing that cannot be avoided, and causing tragic accident on highways and byways, no matter how well structure they are. That is the effect of extremely slippery roads during heavy rain–and for Canada, snow and ice.

And so, on a rainy day, and especially during rush hours, driving, on highways and byways, or even a city street, can become the most difficult situation to deal, with. Drivers must slow down, creating the most sickening situation called the bumper to bumper situation, otherwise multiple accidents would cause numerous death, much, much, more than ever.

Therefore, it is possible that the bumps, in Dominica’s newly structured roads, are not flaws; but they are left purposely to avoid the tragic effects of slippery-ness on a rainy day. Drivers must realize that they need to slow down drastically, when the road is wet, because of it smoothness.

My sympathy goes out to the relatives and people of that 12 year old girl. I pray that they can maintain patience, self-control, and trust in God, until He has decided to reveal to them, the reason this tragic happened in their lives.

May those who survive, recover with much thankfulness for continuous Life, and to give God the glory.

    May 8, 2011

My condolence to the family. Could it be that the wrong type of asphalt or finish? looking at the shine and smoothness of the road, it looks like the asphalt in that area is not porous enough to absorb/dissipate the water when it rains. If this is not corrected there will continue to be accidents in this area or others like it, especially if the vehicle tires do not have the safe amount of thread for rainy conditions. Get a road engineer to take a look at this.

It appears to me that anyone who has got a drivers license today can drive passengers the next day but i would like the traffic and licensing department to take a serious look at these practices.
I am not saying thats the case in this accident but we need to start tighetning all the loose screws that exist within the departments laws ASAP.
One day someone unlucky person will be hit with a very SERIOUS LAWSUIT.

I was on the scene of the accident from a few minutes after it happened up until the mother was taken away on an ambulance. While quite a bit of the comments/statements made here are true, some are completely inaccurate. Keyana was not thrown from the bus but was physically removed from it by someone who arrived on the scene almost immediately after the accident occurred. The young man said that when he got there, the bus was smoking and he thought that it was about to explode so he removed the child and placed her away from the bus.
It was a very heartbreaking experience to stand in the rain and listen to the sounds of grief and physical pain, to feel like it was hours before help arrived, to look over again and again at the life-less body with the makeshift cover of an umbrella and a bag, knowing the reason why the bag was placed over the head, to feel tears creeping in on you but willing yourself to stay strong for those suffering around you and to offer all the assistance that you possibly could under the circumstances.
There is nothing I can say to take away the hurt that the families involved are going through so I won’t even try. Let us as a nation take this as a lesson for us all; treasure the time that you have with your loved ones because in an instant your whole world can be changed forever, try your best to ensure that your vehicles and the ones you ride on are road-worthy and RESPECT WET ROADS!!!
    Rest easy, Keyana

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this child. May they be healed from the lasting effects of this tragedy. I found it in extremely poor taste the way Matt Peltier interviewed the mother and sister on the radio. What was the point of that? I feel that it was an exploitation of these people’s grief and totally uncalled for. I do not think hearing the poor mother sob on national radio enriched any of out lives in any way. I think we should think of the things we do before we do them. That was just wrong on so many levels.

Shame on you Matt, as an experienced journalist you should know that sometimes the scoop is that there is no scoop and not everything needs to be put out there like that. Thats my opinion to which I am entitled. Feel free to disagree or have discourse in any way that you feel appropriate

    P.S.

Is not this a time to be humble and no that we are just humam living on borrowed time from god.
I am addressing the people that are putting their feet on Alvin Alexander neck because of his grammactical errors. Even the greatest writers and speakers makes mistakes, down to the presidents of countries. That is why they have proof readers to look over their writting. To crucify someone for that and trying to make him a nobody is not right. While we at one another’s neck , the other none dominicans are busy making their way up the ladder in the country. This hatred and jealousy are black people’s down fall where ever we are. That hate and jealousy take root after slavery days. The caucasian has done it to us so we cannot and afraid to do it back to them so we are turning on ourselves. That is why we are so backwards when we have people constantly looking for faults in others. Instead , of correcting and lifting up the person ,we would rather tear them down. By doing this i surpose make those haters feel good in their miserable dutty, unforgiving lifes they are living. When when you point one finger , four is pointing back at you. He without sin , cast the first stone.

  56. The truth
    May 8, 2011

It’s simple to me that we need to implement speed limit signs on the roads. We need to assess the road condition and give speed limits to fit that condition. The government then need to get themselves some speed guns and get the police on the road to police speed limits. In Dominica drivers are too ignorant and don’t realize that they can kill other people on the road with their ridiculous driving.

I find it crazy that the driver almost always survives, yet I have never heard of one being prosecuted after such accidents. the government have a million police on the road. Get them away from Roseau and actively in the streets. People do not need tickets for parking. They need them for speeding. Get them on the roads!

Some of ya’ll need to stop being ignorant……talking about dont blame the driver, we were not there, the bus had 11 passengers, thats enough wait to keep the bus well planted to the ground at a reasonable speed of 60 since the road is soo wet, the only other reasonable explanation is the driver ran over some huge bump or was not paying attention to the road, so alot of blame is to be put on the driver!!!!! Dominica is one of the countries that hasnt adopted any modern transit system. Most countries have public transportation with equipment tailored for such purposes like. Big buses that provide better protection for occupants in the event of an accident.

Dominica uses these tiny mini-vans as buses. These vans are meant to hold 12-16 passengers often fitted with 22 people. Which is crazy!! I feel sorry for the family of the deceased. My heart goes out to them but blame the powers that be and the government for their lack of forsight!

My prayers and well wishes go out to all affected by this terrible accident.

@ block 44, the driver is always responsible, unless it is an act of God. Even if oil or ice (which may not be in this case) is present, the first driving rule we are all taught is that the driver of a motor vehicle should never operate such vehicle at a speed that he is unable to avoid an accident.

Did anyone notice the “bald” tires which may have been a contributing factor?

Here is something which could work. apart from getting their licence, the gov’t should oblige the chauffeurs to go through some kind of first aid and road safety course, before going on the road with passengers.there is alot to be done.

    • Bus Rider
      May 8, 2011

I agree with this. As emergency services are not just minutes away, the more people who know CPR and first aid the better the chance for survival. It was tough to read that they could not even get a hold of an emergency service. I don’t believe the government is responsible for everything but I would think a proper emergency service agency is mandatory!!!! People die of heart attacks all the time here, maybe even while someone is waiting to reach the ambulance. Please take this into consideration.

Every blessed day I HAVE to take the bus to and from work. The first thing I do is to cover under the blood of Jesus, the chauffeur and all the passengers including me. I have seen some madness already in the life re bus drivers. Sometimes where you live there is no choice so you must take what comes your way as the buses are far and in between. Now that the gas price is raised buses have reduced their running time therefore one is forced to take anything even bald tires. God help us.

This is so sad. I pray that the family get through this. They may never forget but this is the time when Dominican’s can be supportive to others instead of often times seek the negative in every incident. 12 yrears really sad. And for the drivers, the tend to forget that anyform of transportation is a weapon. When it makes contact with anything it can kill or do damage. And i have seen them drive with very little disregard to the lifes they are carrying. The roads obviously when wet will be slippery, there’s so many tunrs and twist in our roads. It would be common sense to drive slower. I pray that other drivers learn from that. RIP my dear child

This is a very sad and tragic incident. My sincere condolences to the family and friends. Every mother’s nightmare and on the eve of Mother’s Day.
The authorities should make something positive out of every negative incident, Pay attention to the reckless bus drivers on our roads and there are many. Do some monitoring, you can start with the Soufriere/Scottshead route, there are at the very LEAST, 3 of them you may take off the road.
Some drivers seem to forget they have other people’s lives in their hands when they drive a bus.

      May 7, 2011

I could not agree with you more. Also on the Grand bay road, those bus drivers have no regard for human life, they speed and they over take other vehicles even in the sharp corners. Just this morning on that wet slippery road, a driver wanted to force me into a precipice to go ahead of me right in a corner (with passengers) and I mean this is so unbelievable. I think it is high time that passengers begin demanding that bus drivers proceed with caution, if not (God forbid) this will not be the last road fatality due to crazy driving.
As a driver I think the police should keep an eye on those crazy bus drivers (and in my opinion most of them are) who just pull over and pull out of bus stops without looking or indicating.

Please do not let this precious life be lost in vain, let it be a wake up call for all of us

Deepest sympathy to the family. However, some people were making comments with regards to seat belts and international standards. The accident in the vehicle was a hired bus and not a private ride. Passengers do not wear seat belts on buses not even internationally. Only the bus driver and passenger infront could have had a seatbelt.

    • mya
      May 7, 2011

You are right about internationally but most of the buses here are equipped with seatbelts.

      • starr
        May 8, 2011

yes they are.there is enuff seatbelt for each passenger except those small seats.but the drivers tend to overload the buses therefore more ppl remain without seatbelts, and besides,if u go on a bus and wear seatbelt, the driver and other ppl look at u like ur a freak or something for wearing dat so most ppl just dont.hhmm

  95. Accept my sympathy
    May 7, 2011

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of such a young life. Drivers take care to drive with caution in this wet weather.

  96. Crazy Bus drivers need to wake up
    May 7, 2011

I have had enough incidents with bus drivers already. I blocked one on a bridge and told him he is responsible for the life of his passengers so he better drive with more care. He was fuming, but fuk him.

The last one ended up crashing and a lady lost both legs… I think passengers need to take a stand and get out of a bus if the driver is driving like a fool. Until that time the passengers have to take a portion of the blame.

God has given us a warning system against to let us know when we are in probable danger, but if we choose to ignore it then this is what can happen.

    May 7, 2011

That bus looks like the bus I saw doing a madness yesterday in Fond Cole……

There need to be some serious laws in place to deal with these bus drivers…all jokes aside. I think enough is enough, these people take the lives that are entrusted in their care for a big joke. I see madness every day, and I pray for my family who one way or the other have to find themself riding on these buses.

I think people have to start boycotting these crazy bus drivers, if you know the person do not care to take care, my friend look for another bus, try to get to your destination some other way. I do not take chances like that, I know we all have to die, but life is precious, and as long as we have it, we got to be appreciative.

I do not take the bus often but when I do I always get in trouble with the bus driver, I cannot sit and see you attempting to kill me….these types of foolishness on the road with a bus filled with passenger to me is nothing less than attempted mass murder.

I feel for this family, the mother oh boy…you will find the strength, it will be hard but God is going to walk every step with you….

oh my gosh. this is very sad. It not easy to wake up in the morning, go on DNO and see that sad update. My condolences goes out to the family of that little girl and i wish the injured a speedy recovery.

First of all, the bus driver seeing all that rain and he driving at a speed he cannot control? Damn it man. You have people precious lives on board that u cannot replace. Bus drivers have to take carrying passengers very serious man, Is not garbage u carrying man. Some of the money the bus drivers making on the road should be in a savings account to take care of their damn bus especially buying new tires. All they want to do is bit race with each other and see how many trips they making a day. Alot of the bus drivers have fowl brain.

I HOPE THEY TAKE AWAY HIS LICENSE!

yo the reality is there is a time and place for everything…but never a time to be driving to fast like allu drivin a race car! so dere is sumthing called average speed,u cruise along the way instead of speeding or driving slow.if u on a open stretch,u can hold a steady cruise speed, but if u on da same open road and it wet and ur tires not good,u shud kno u ought to go much slower dispite wat passengers say cuz in the end u have to do wats best…God cant please all men,so dont expect to..but he does for us whats best!so i blame the driver…he had to be moving a bit too fast for dat to happen, any experienced driver should able to know dat from seeing this.

I got on site soon after the accident and those who were there said they could not reach emergency services. I had to call. To get to fire and ambulance in an emergency, please dial 448-2888 and NOT 999! You get instant response with 448-2888.

This was a most gloomy and tragic day, especially as the rain kept pouring throughout the whole ordeal. My condolences to the family of the young girl and wish the injured a speedy recovery. Please, speeding on wet roads is not a good idea, especially with bald tires!

  131. what the hell are people thinking
    May 7, 2011

sorry to hear that my condolences goes out to her family but this is only going to get worse in Dominica as we getting better roads the paving of the road is flat which is good but the surface texture to fine the gravel they using to make the tarmac is to small so if that can happen on that road that has a reasonably rough surface texture imagine what its gonna be like when all the roads in dca paved so smooth no matter how new yr tires are as a little rain fall u will get less and less grip so people be careful on the roads yes they will soon be paved and looking good and nice and wide but the surface texture to smooth be careful take yr time my fellow Dominicans

    • Onlydominican.com
      May 7, 2011

The new roads are not Gravel based. they used gravel in the past to maximize savings. The smooth surface provides more grip as more of the tire makes contact with the road than with portions of the tire making contact with gravel.

Poor tires, Poor Alignment, and suspension in need of replacement coupled with stupidity are the cause of these accidents.

my good dominican im a construction engineer with the british army and the shooth surface they laying down are only used in 2 applications 1) on race tracks where slick soft compound racing tires are used and grip like hell when there warmed up 2) on low speed residential roads where tires dont need a rough surface to girp to cause high speed is not used .and in dca we have no speed limits and i was dominica christmas and ill tell u the mix there using to pave the roads is a mix of fine gravel and very heavy tar thats a smooth surface what they need to use is a course gravel slightly smaller than what is used in house construction and a heavy tar that produces a good wear surface with a rough surface texture so the corners of the thread on ur tire have somethgin to bite into a smooth surface road does not produce that and trust me myfriend even if u have the best tires in the world on those roads there in dominica where they recently paved the surface is to smooth myfriend next time u comment on somethgin make sure the person u reply to is not a speacialist in the field ur commenting on

into drugs or a line of crime. The brother is trying to make a life for his self. You rather the foreingners to progress that your own. This is self hate. We are always finding petty fault in people.
I hope you have no children. Would you have like someone to down your child like that , who is honestly trying to make a living by developing his talent. You are just plain cutting him down. Shame on you. You are of the devil. Here is someone who is innocently doing his work on earth , and here you are as satan cutting him down. what a waste of you in the human race.

My sincere and heartfelt sympathy goes out the young girl. i know it must be hard 4 her family and close friends but if we put God first n leave the problems and heartache in his heart, we definitely will get through it. The bus driver must be feeling awful about the situation so now is not the time to be blaming and pointing fingers. just say thank God, it could have been worst. R.I.P YOUNG GWENETH.

How many more accidents in that exact same area before something is done, that piece of road is dangerous, its way too smooth it needs to be resurface with immediate effect. That’s way to many accidents in the exact same place, check the records, up to recently, about a 2 months ago there were two back to back accidents in that exact same spot.

Or maybe as drivers knowing the road is dangerous could take more care… I drive on smooth roads all the time and this has nothing to do with accidents. If it is smooth and nice then slow down proper where necessary. This is a bus driver, he knows the road well. He should know when to slow down. Just saying

      • Anonymous
        May 7, 2011

Remember that road is not their regular route they usually pass thru belles but because of the road work they r passing dat route. Drivers fron the East and South East know dat area very well. Wet or Dry, slow or fast you have to watch out

    • Former Student
      May 7, 2011

yah because all accidents that happen more than once in a particular area is because the road that bad……….it doesnt have nutting to do with the drivers and their speeding with passengers on board at all………illiterate.

@ Former Student…papa met how foolish can you be and even calling people illiterate.

If the road bad bodia you should drive carefully to prevent accidents don’t you think? Any wise driver should know that. So for you to say it has nothing to do with the drivers you are being very illiterate.

        May 7, 2011

to former student driver it has alot todo with the driver, and the speed on that wet road with passengers lives on board, because weither road smoothe or rough it always slippry when wet with motor oil residue, drive slow 10-20 miles below the regular speed limit, regardless of the hurry you are in, you love smooth road dont you ,you complain when the road is rough. then drive carefull or drive slow when it rains thats how we save lives in the driving world dont blame the road. retarded, precaution is better than cure, dont blame the road, blame the driver.

    • mya
      May 7, 2011

The road is not the problem. The way people drive on the road is the problem. Roads are supposed to be smooth. The problem is that because the road is smooth & the road straightens out in this stretch drivers want to act like they are on a race track. They drive to fast & can’t control there vehicle, the situation is made worse by poor vehicle maintenance & rain. The same thing is true with the area in front of Public Works & the stretch in Sylvania. When going at excessive speeds SUVs & Buses are also more likely to flip over due to their shapes.

I’m so sorry for all those involved in the accident. I pray you all make a quick recovery. To the family of the young girl, please except my sympathy. May her soul rest in peace. I pray God gives you the strength needed to get through this difficult time.

wow,sad news for dca this day.im sure this guy was speeding.some of these bus drivers dont care about the passengers life and wellbeing at all.all they see is the dollar sign in front their eyes so they rush to try and get every passenger at the cost of their own life.time passengers start speaking up while on speeding buses or avoid them so they wont have a choice but to take heed.wet road,no need for speeding.just yesterday a 12yr old girl was crushed to death in sxm by a truck while she was crossing the street just from exiting a school bus.hey whats really going on???Jah knows…
