Agriculture ministry providing supplies to interested farmers for white potato season

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy has announced the ongoing import of seed planting materials for white potatoes. For the 2024/25 agricultural season, a shipment of 1,160 bags of the Spunta and Desiree varieties will be brought in to facilitate the cultivation of more than 40 acres of white potatoes.

This planned production is set to occur between December 2024 and March 2025, specifically in agricultural areas with optimal climate and soil conditions to ensure effective and fruitful growth. The Extension Services Unit of the Division of Agriculture aims to involve over 125 farmers in this initiative by providing them with seed materials, farming inputs, expert guidance, training, and assistance with market access. This effort will be in collaboration with the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA), WUSC Dominica, the Caribbean Research and Development Institute (CARDI), and the National White Potato Farmer’s Cooperative.

The seed potatoes are scheduled to arrive on November 22, at which point a mandatory quarantine and diagnostic and phytosanitary testing period will follow. Farmers who are interested in growing white potatoes are encouraged to register in advance by sharing their details with the Regional Extension Officer or at the farmer service center in their respective regions.
