Cocoa coordinator appointed to boost production – Walter

Government has appointed a cocoa coordinator in moves to boost cocoa production in Dominica.

The coordinator has already begun implementation of a cocoa rehabilitation program in the northeast of the island, according to
Minister for Agriculture Matthew Walter.

“He has galvanized the support of approximately 77 cocoa producers in the northeast alone,” Walter said.

He has appealed to local farmers to make the best use of opportunities for cocoa production; but the minister has assured cocoa will not replace the other traditional crops of Dominica.

“We understand that we cannot turn a blind eye on traditional crops that used to bring in a lot of foreign exchange to Dominica.

“I would advise the farmers of this country that they should take advantage of the programs that the government is putting in place,” Walter highlighted.

Once again we are presented with what is supposedly a news report with no real news value. Last week we were told to keep our fingers crossed about the promised coffee program; this week we are told that an unnamed person has been appointed to lead the cocoa program.

As has been pointed out by several other readers we are still looking for answers about the program. Why ,oh why is there such secrecy about the identity of the Cocoa Co-ordinator? What about the government’s pledge to be more transparent?

Clearly the operating principle seems to be one of keeping the populace in the dark while feeding them a lot of verbal manure. This is very sad indeed.

Mr. minister cocoa has always been a traditional crop of Dominica. I grew up on coco tea, roast plantain and saltfish.I drank coco.a tea everday when I went to high school.
Unfortunately cocoa was abandoned by the ministry of Agriculture. There is a demand for
cocoa at home and abroad. We need to find a way to add value to our cocoa and not just
export it in it”s raw form.

But who is the Cocoa Coordinator, what is the big secret about the name. We need to know, so that we can dialogue with the individual. Doesn’t Mr. Walter understand that this is our business and if the state is paying somebody to be a Cocoa Coordinator we need to know who it is. This is not his pig pen in Paix Bouche you know, this is the State’s business. What is going on.
Last year during the election campaign, I saw Mr. Skerrit signing a contract for 60million dollars with a Chinese man, and up to now its one year and almost one month we have heard nothing about the Chinese Hotel, now he tells us about a Moroco Hotel. When will these men stop treating us like dummies. Oh My God. Now this one comes with a Cocoa Coordinator, and he cannot disclose his name. Eh Lass, poor us in Dominica

People should know the truth and they are not being informed. There is much more about this cocoa hype. Now that organic pure dark chocolate is known to have medicinal purposes there is a high demand for organic cocoa world wide. Presently, this product fetches a high price on the international market.

    January 8, 2011

why is it that everything this government does is a secret? who is the coordinator? what is his role? what does the minister want us to do? I grow cocoa dosent know anything about this, however i am happy that this is being considered cocoa is very good for people suffering with high blood pressure cocoa can make chocolate. Dominicans like imported stuff over naturally grown unlike the American who will go to lengths looking for organic and fresh produce so this is a good move if it dosent fall through

Alas so the man expressing his opinion. I cannot see how that can make some body vex. Just because he give his view from two different angles you have a problem with that. Since when asking a significant question turn to government bashing? Is people like you that turn every thing into politics.I am so fed up of this, every thing some one says is interpreted as a political statement. So tell me please, because you support the government you cannot ask questions?? Does that even make sense?? Because you love your kids, you will not correct them I f you think they going wrong?
Thats what DNO is all about, people make statements, ask questions. For all you know DNO might be able to answer the man questions or find out for us who is the cocoa coordinator.

good start..! continued proper support is what we need. There is need for value added goods, We need our signature brand and flavour of chocolate products, this should be the ultimate goal of your “programs” Mr. Minister. We tired export raw material and in return pay with our life. Peace

what are the programs for cocoa production that the government has put in place.. do we acctualy have a market for our cocoa? can we compete with ivory coast?

    • Snake in a canoe
      January 8, 2011

If our cocoa of a better quality and demands are raised. I’m sure that alone would spark the cultivation ofmore of the crop. Chocolate is a bigggggggg business as the price for chocolate is going higher each year. That’s great news.

So why is the identity of the coordinator being kept a secret? WE

    • Cocoa Coordinator
      January 9, 2011

Because the position has already been taken the advertizemnt is just a formality.
But skerrit want, so does Julien,Alic, Nanton ,Reggie,Ambrose want it, even Toni interested with a cavate. The opposition leader sent in an application. But hear that ,Julie coco say he is the authentic coco man alias julie coco.So now it’s between Julie coco & Skerro.
