DOAM hosts workshops on Soil Management for Organic Farming

The Dominica Organic Agriculture Movement Inc. and the Florida Association of Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas (FAVACA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will host a series of one day workshops from July 19 to 22, 2011 on Soil Management for Organic Farming.

The training is facilitated by Dr. George Fitzpatrick, Professor of the Environmental Horticulture Farm Department at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center who will be assisted by Dr. Mary Lamberts, a horticultural extension agent at the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service.

The workshops will be held at four locations namely Bellevue Chopin, Calibishie, Castle Bruce and Delices / La Plaine.

The primary objectives of this initiative is to train farmers and other interested persons in the techniques of soil nutrient management for tropical organic crop production systems and to provide intensive technical training at composting sites with the potential to lead a composting industry.

The week of activities will begin with a public lecture on Monday July 18 at the Fort Young Hotel Conference on ‘On-Farm Methodologies for Compost Production’ presented by Dr. George Fitzpatrick.

The lecture begins at 7.30pm and will be carried live on DBS Radio and video streamed on the internet.

Registration for non-members is $30.00 to include 1 year membership and DOAM members register for free.
