Dominica to host Week of Agriculture

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Samuel Carrette

Dominica will host the 7th Caribbean Week of Agriculture in October, an activity expected to profit the island.

Described as what may be the biggest agriculture event to be hosted by Dominica, the Week of Agriculture will see the arrival of several ambassadors, and prime ministers, not just from the Caribbean, according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Samuel Carrette.

“You are talking about bringing at minimum 150 persons into the country… We’re talking about the very senior people. You may have heads of governments like prime ministers; you’ll have a number of ministers of agriculture … It’s a hemispheric activity,” Carrette told DBS radio’s Talking point program Monday.

He said Dominica’s management of its agriculture is exemplary, and the country is likely to benefit from the upcoming occasion in terms of the recognition and short-term employment, particularly for those in the tourism sector.  Carrette says hotels must “take a keen interest” in the activity.

A series of meetings have been held to date and an official of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture will be in Dominica this week in preparation for the event.

“He said Dominica’s management of its agriculture is exemplary,” Is Mr Carette being mis-quoted’ or is he referring to Dominican Republic?

This is a big joke,n right? With the present state of the agricultural industry, I would think twice about hosting this event here. The Agricultural Sector is in a shameful!!

Sounds like a party for the heads of state and agriculture is the excuse.

Agriculture is in dire straits right now with a long way to go and virtually no leadership from govt.
That should be a clue. Farmers, get a plan and go for it, money or no money.
You are the only ones that know what is really going on.

If we are happy with the status of our agricultural industry then we are doomed. What is exemplary about the management system when our farmers are abandoning their plantation and running to the other islands. 20 years ago we had a vibrant agricultural sector. Along the thriving banana industry we also had significant export of other agricultural goods, oranges, grapefruits, limes plantains , buffed bananas , yams etc. We had a number of ships leaving Portsmouth sometimes 2-3 ships leaving for Guadeloupe , St Martin , Antigua , St Thomas all carrying agricultural produce. Today we hardly have hucksters in Dominica much less for cargo ships.
Can somebody tell me what is happening.

even for food; they have us running rat race.
a place sooo blessed, a place so abundant, people so intelligent, land soo fertile…
let them continue thier rat race business, one thing i know, no matter who win, they still a rat, so run on…
agriculture should not be an “issue” in this country, for all i care, it should be one of the greatest investments and greatest revenue for the country both internally and externally…
who doe want to hear will go hungry, and a hungry man is an angry man, the people that keep ducking the the real issues will have some strong issues to deal with when Dominicans fed up.
doe say i doe talk ehh… a hungry man is an angry man…
all that crown land that could go for suitable housing for poor people or even agricultural land, is being left to the wild… we need to restructure our goal for this county… if it all about making money for some people, no matter how they get it… well let us all get merits from Jah above and still make our money nuh.. is out little peice of rock, let us take care of it… home sweet Dominica… no more segregation through politics or religion, let us put aside and eat from a healthy and wealthy banquet.. please my people… something can be done… but first… we need to become spiritually strong.. hold on my fellow citizen, times are hard… keep your head up!… keep healthy, even if the market doe have what you want… look for other alternatives, the big boys eating and living happy, while they poison us mentally and in all other forms… they choose thier way of life ut i suggest we all choose a positive way of life… we have to try hard for ourselves. atleast.. try.
