Dry season affecting banana production

The Windward Islands Farmers Association (WINFA) says a decrease in size and volume of bananas is placing further pressure on banana production in the Windward Islands.

Renwick Rose, WINFA coordinator, says the problem is a consequence of the prolonged dry season currently affecting the region.

He said the dry spell has caused a significant decrease in the production and export of bananas in the Windward Islands, which is concerning banana officials.

“Clearly that is increasing pressure on us at a time when we have enough worries in the market place in Europe, with all the problems with the tariff and so on,” he underscored.

Rose expressed fears that a longer dry season will worsen things in the banana industry.

‘We can only continue to pray that the drought is about to pass to try and see how we can get back significant volumes,” he added.
