Farmers and residents of the Layou Park and Sultan region received a first-hand tour of the recently constructed and soon to be operational National Abattoir.

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries along with technical officers of his Ministry, Parliamentary Representative of both the Mahaut and St. Joseph constituencies took the lead in the familiarization tour to enable the residents to walk through the over EC$10-million structure and address their concerns regarding the operations and its impact on the farms and homes in the vicinity, employment for residents, purchasing of pigs and poultry from the area’s farmers and management of solid and liquid waste from the operations.

Minister for Agriculture Hon. Johnson Drigo urged the residents to take ownership of the Abattoir whether through their farm initiatives, by supplying animals for slaughter or through seeking gainful employment to ensure that the project is successful.

Parliamentary Representative for the Mahaut Constituency Hon. Rayburn Blackmore reminded the residents that the success of the Abattoir is also dependent on them.

Those from the area who will be employed should strive to be professional, hardworking and honest and not engaged in vandalism or related criminal behaviour.

Parliamentary Representative for St. Joseph Kelver Darroux said that he was elated as jobs for his constituents is top on his priority list.

Supervisor of the Abattoir and Chief veterinarian, Dr. Reginald Thomas took the lead inside the facility explaining the process of slaughtering, packaging and storage.

In attendance was also Director of Agriclture- Ricky Brumant, PS Agriculture – Harold Guiste, Special Projects Co-ordinator (MoAF) Nicolls Esprit.

I’m hearing everything about the abattoir but the price per unit. Per pig, per chicken, per pound, per ounce, how are the farmers getting paid?

The problems with Africans every thing we try to do even before we start we think its going to fail. If you tell them lets export water , o no its going to fail we can get water from Trinidad cheaper. Even when they migrate to the Bronx o no we cannot get rich the white man will not let us. We have told our selves we arenot capable of doing nothing. We were born to just serve other people. We actualy believe we are an inferior race of people. We will never succeed until we fix the mind. Every other race on earth can feed their selves except us. After slavery we were left to be proffesional beggars. Yes the Abbatoir can work go and learn to make feed , raise pigs and chickens thats not to complated, if we use our brains we can create millionars and export meat and chickens to Caricom countrys and employ people. Stop the nonesense that you can not. Please get to work and think of how you keep the price down.

Yes Jack. You’re exactly the type that the White Man likes. An uncle Tom. Someone with no back bone. A sell out. Someone who will denigrate his own to look good in the eyes of the White Man. You my friend are a traitor. A Judas and a Benedict Arnold.

What a Joke! This is a failure before it has begun! Only a matter of time! Very, very sad! Why is this not a juicing factory! Dominica has plenty still of fruits here. The cost of getting the pigs and chickens to the abattoir plus the price of killing them will then put up the cost of the end product! Everyone is hurting for money how on earth will anyone be able to afford the product?? This is a no brainer failure. At least the Layou river will be spared being contaminated! What a waste of money and time.

If it was a juicing factory you would say why not an abbatoir. If it was both you would say why not export more bananas.

The truth is nothing can work when you oppose the people who do it. Just be honest and say you wish them mal and be yourself. Noone will think less of you. You not too high up already.

Putting emphasis on an abattoir now is not the best use for the scare resources. Already the price of locally produced livestock items are higher than imported ones. There will always be a small market for fresh locally produced items at the higher prices, but this will not produce the strong incentive for self sufficiency because imported items will be cheaper, and government can’t just raise taxes to help the farmers out because of treaty obligations. The first emphasis should be on providing the bulk of the feed and reproduction matters,on island at competitive prices,to stimulate the needed production levels, to begin driving down prices to be competitive. The cart has come before the horse. The donkey’s tail is in front of its head
