Insurance coverage could soon be given to those involved in the agricultural sector.
That was a decision taken at a regional agricultural insurance symposium in Antigua this month.
Agriculture Minister Mathew Walter told a press conference on Tuesday that Dominica will soon be looking for an entity that will give coverage to those involved in the crops, livestock, fishers and forestry sectors.
“There are persons who are involved directly and indirectly. We are looking at giving coverage to all those who are involved in the agricultural sector. Dominica cannot do it alone. The risk is so great that Dominica cannot take up that responsibility alone. This is why we in the Caribbean consolidate our efforts and energies,” he said.
According to Walter, the meeting also concluded that the only way to respond to disaster risk mitigation is by coming together, “working together, putting this entity in place that will be able to share the risk among us in other for us to be able to respond to individual farmers within the agriculture sector”.
The Regional Agricultural Insurance Symposium also addressed the institutional challenges in disaster risk management in the sector.
Mr Minister how is the insurance to be funded? What are the mechanics of the whole thing?
