Dominica has sought assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its fight against the deadly Black Sigatoka disease on the island.
A major consultation to develop an integrated Pest management system for the control of the disease in Dominica is taking place today (Thursday).
One of the World’s leading Black Sigatoka experts Dr. Luis Vincente Perez is currently on Island to help formulate that plan.
Plant Protection and Quarantine Officer in the division of agriculture, Ryan Anselm, says today’s consultation is critical for the sector.
“We are targeting the farmers, the hucksters, the exporters, major stakeholders, fair-trade and DAPEX … everyone involved in the banana sector. It is important to remind the Dominican public that Black Sigatoka is a very serious disease, it is a disease of significant economic importance and that is why the Ministry of Agriculture has seek the assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),” Anselm told Dominica News online.
He said the objective of the consultation is to discuss foreign and integrated pest management strategies for the overall control of the disease.
Also on island for the consultation is Food and Protection Officer at the FAO Vayju Lopez.
The consultation takes place at the Garraway Hotel this morning from 8:00.
