Citing challenges faced by the farming community in the Marigot area as the reason, Local Government Commissioner John Fontaine has announced that the annual Market Day with a Difference in that community, carded for this weekend, is cancelled.

The event is a permanent fixture on the country’s Independence celebration calendar, but conditions before and after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika have taken their toll.

“Pre Erika period, we had partial drought, hot period, and so that affected production and post Erika, we’ve had impacts on farms,” Fontaine told DNO on Thursday. “There were landslides and the problems with access to farms and basically impacted on the production so this has caused the cancellation of Market Day with a Difference. We do apologize for the inconvenience caused and we look forward to continuing to work with our partners as we strive to build Dominica together.”

He noted that the decision to cancel the event was not an easy one.

“The decision was a bit difficult because the vendors and the farmers in the Marigot area look forward to Market Day with a Difference every year, the people who go and purchase the items as well but it’s beyond our control so the decision had to be taken,” he stated.

Fontaine pointed out that activities of such nature are economic drivers in any community and its cancellation will have an impact.

“We at the department of Local Government, we promote economic development and we know that the impact of the cancellation of activities like that will definitely have an impact on the local economic situation,” he stated.

Market Day with a Difference is normally held in different communities to highlight the island’s agricultural produce and the farmers that grow them.

Sorry this show is cancelled. TS Erika took its toll on Dominica and its produce. Poor Dominica. This is a real test for nationals.
Yes! You will rise again with the help of God and all others who have assisted Dominica and others who will help.
God does not let his people down. He said: “I will never forget you, My people. . . .”
Patience and time Dominica will be restored to what it once was before TS Erika and even more beautiful. Wait and see!
The vegetables look sumptuous, ready for cooking/baking. I love pumpkin. Recently, I bought three different types on sale. There are different types of pumpkin. There is the acorn, butternut and a few other names. They could be baked, roasted, stewed and baked in casseroles. Delicious!
Try cutting an acorn one, the round green one in two, across and bake/roast it. Simply cutting it, it looks beautiful.
Google the recipes. I got some from Google. Pumpkin and Squash.

Didn’t you read Mr Fontaine said the decision was out of his control. Neither de ps nor de minister for local government have de power to cancel it.
De power obviously rests in de supremo pm.
You want lennox to go beyond de pm and organize it with his own money?
Doesn’t skerrit have a lot more money than lennox?
And de miss wob and madam wob?
You have more confidence in linton than our pm. Seriously!!

You did not read the article properly. This has something to do with TS Erika and the aftermath. The areas to the farm are inaccessible. This also means they lost crops due to this terrible storm.
Dominicans need to pray that they never experience such a storm again. I hate to say this, the next one, whenever it occurs will be even worst. Some people of the world in general are getting worst and so storms may be more frequent with devastating effects.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, The Divine Mercy said: “Unless mankind turns to My Merciful Heart, there will be no peace.”
This includes the disasters which are occurring including increased crimes, godless people and unloving ones. Turn to God and also perform good deeds in Jesus Name which will appease Him..
A religious song, entitled: “Jesus Needs A Few Good Men (women).” Indeed! Our Lord said: “The Harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. . . ” God needs more laborers in His Vineyard, genuine ones.
