The Ministry of Agriculture on its quest to ensure that agriculture remains an contributing sector of the economy has imported new varieties of Irish potatoes as a means of encouraging farmers to diversify.
During a tasting exhibition of the new potato, Taletha Laudat, a representative of the Division of Agriculture revealed that two new crops have recently been introduced to Dominica.
“This year we did research on three new cultivars: Cheftain, Challenger and Spunta. We’ve tried our best to introduce these potatoes to the consumers to determine whether they appreciate the new cultivars,” Laudat revealed.
She notes that these new varieties have been introduced to other parts of the island.
“The optimal growing condition for potatoes is the southern agricultural region: Bellevue Chopin and Giraudel. We have introduced potatoes to new areas like the north-east: Woodfordhill and Capuchin,” she said.
Asked about the optimum areas for potato cultivation on island, Laudat responded, “We have different agro-ecological zones and the climatic conditions are different however in the north-east, the yield was excellent.”
