Officials of the Dominica Fair Trade Organization are worried about the sustainability of production within the banana industry despite reports that Dominica has recorded an increase in production so far this year.
Business manager at the Dominica Fair Trade Organization Dave Lloyd said an additional investment in the sector is urgently needed.
“The issue that concerns us is the question of sustainability and whether we can sustain that increase. We are working with fewer farmers than last year and we see that the decline we saw in 2009/10 has levelled off, but the program was originally built in to have increased sustainability,” he said.
Lloyd said what was given last year by government has contributed to the increase and improvement in the industry. He is calling for other investments of such magnitude.
Mr. Lloyds you need to step up your game. Stop depending on the Government to do everything. I agree that the Government can assist however you need to help yourself by being innovative and try to develop strategies that may work. First of the Board of Directors are very incompetent and from what I understand they are not receptive to ideas and positive suggestions. They need to go!! They are unable to make sensible decisions to improve the operations of the organizations. There is a lot that can be done to improve your operations as a unit so explore the options.
much respect to the farmers
