Salisbury farmers protest in Roseau

salisbury farmer

Farmers from the Salisbury community are now in the capital city Roseau protesting what they say are “poor road conditions” leading to their farms.

The farmers are driving around the capital in their vehicle in an effort to have their voices heard.

“We have spoken to government, our parl rep has also done so and they are not listening,” one farmer said.

They said that their protest in the city was a “last resort” to have their concerns heard.

“We are hoping that someone will hear us and take the necessary action … we need better roads to our farms,” they said.

Parliamentary representative for Salisbury, Hector John is with the farmers ‘in solidarity.’

When asked for a comment he said, “it’s the farmers’ time, speak to them…”

Danny Lugay and his committee sourced funds to fix Lindo Park and the government stopped it. So those of you suggesting that the farmers should fix the road themselves. …will the government allow them….hmmm. Be careful what precedence you set….

Haitian Farmers Protest Against Astier Demarest

Haitian farmers are protesting against Astier Demarest because of slow payments and breach of contracts

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Haitian farmers are protesting against Astier Demarest for violating payment terms of crop production agreements that the farmers had with Astier Demarest.

According to Stephane Laferriere, a Haitian farmer, Astier Demarest deliberately slowed payment for several months and then underpaid him and several other small Haitian Vetiver grass farmers even though the crops had been delivered in good order to Astier Demarest.

There are approximately 30,000 small farmers in Haiti that cultivate Vetiver grass on their farms. The Vetiver roots are sold to Astier Demarest and used to make perfume and other fragrances.

As the Haitian farmers depend on growing Vetiver for their livelihood, the underpayments and payment delays by Astier Demarest have caused major financial problems for many Haitian farmers and some have lost their farms.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and its farmers are some of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

The underpayments and repeated delays in payments have angered agricultural organizations and officials in Haiti, and several groups are demanding a boycott of Astier Demarest for unethical business practices.

Are you a . You Dominicans are really wicked to think that the little money farmers make can fix roads. What about mouths to feed? Children to send to school? Vehicle parts to repair and replace as they that get destroyed on the bad roads. You people have become as insensitive as the party you support.
I have a brother who is a farmer and I know it is just the love of farming that is keeping him in that business. Farmers are honest hard working people who do not to depend on handouts. Give them what is due to them as any other Dominican!!!

Shame on the people of salisbury to wait at this moment in time to protest about road. These people have been supporters of the United Workers Party and their roads have been in a deplorable condition for many years and long before.

So proud of our Farmers of Dominica,

More farmers need to join in the protest. carpool my people , farmers from all over the island need to protest, be peaceful and use only your head , heart and lounge , but protest.

People od Dominica we are rich in soil, go back to the soil. Plant , plant , plant ,plant in the front yard back yard , side yard, and in your gardens.

when you plant the fruits and vegies ,you will be able to sustain yourselves and avoid the temptation of handouts , bribes , and dependency.

Keep the rives and the sea clean, do your part and stop littering ,when you keep the rivers and sea clean the livestock and sea creatures will survive .

The fishermen should go back to fishing there is a good market for fish, go back to the sea young men, if you do, we can start nation building again and restore our dignity.

Parents ,push education on your children. Read books young people , read to your parents and grandparents who cannot read and write , so they can make a decision of change .

WAKE UP EVERYBODY THE TIME IS NOW , a CHANGE IS GONNA COME CHANGE IS A MUST.

Labour party supporters see you as a joker, a little boy following behind Lennox. So do your thing. Boycott like them too. Don’t worry, you only had a few farmers with you but you must try another boycott again. Let Lennox see you can do just like him. Boycott, boycott, boycott with no damn positive results. Toneh!!!!

The only natural resources Dominica has is it fertile soil. When any government turn their back on the productivity of the soil that country and its people will suffer. take a look at carholme and machouchrie and ask how much money is that land bringing to the country. The young adults could use the land as a form of employment.

Do the people from that area pay taxes? if so why do they have to raise funds when it is the duty of the government to fix the roads. I remember as a child, it was alway the Salisbury people passing by on vans selling local goods such as watermelon and vegetables, they are very good farmers. It is a shame that they have to beg soo much for help with their road condition, all politics aside. it is a bloody shame.

I think it is time that folks adapt the self-reliance method. The same way they were able to come togather to protest, why don’t they do the same and fix the roads, since they are the ones who will benefit from that. No govt in any part of the world can do everything, people must stop depending on govts for what they want. It is time that parl reps create incentives and show the govts you can do things without them. On another note, Hector should have been in the house the past two yrs rather than boycotting the house.

I agree with ur statement where people should be able to come together and do things for their constituency however the government needs to help them as well. You do not expect the farmers to fix the roads on their own. That’s the reason why a government was elected, that’s the reason why we pay taxes. So yes we can help but the Government needs to do for the country not just their “supporter”

    • Tri-State Beauty

    • Chupes
      October 30, 2013

Ordinarily I would agree, but not where tax payers monies are concerned. We pay income taxes, people with vehicles pay duties, licences; everything we buy there is a 15% value added tax (VAT), every utility bill we pay there is the 15% tax. So if government is receiving all this revenue, it is their duty to provide these services such as maintenance of roads and bridges. We are not begging them, this is their job. And if the farmers protest, its because they are feeling it. Do you know what it feels like to farm in the interior of Dominica and have to walk 20 minutes with heavy produce on your backs just to get to a proper road? Some farmers go through this every day especially in areas of Castle Bruce and Carib Territory.

  32. Nature Spice
    October 30, 2013

I read on another social media post where someone said that the government ask farmers to go and produce and now they protesting?

Here is my answer to that person:-
How can the farmers continue to produce when they (the farmers) cannot even go to their farms because of bad/poor farm roads conditions. Their vehicle are always down and in bad condition due to the roads. The little money the farmers make have to be spent to repair their vehicles instead of buying inputs for their farms in order to produce more.

Don’t even mention that all the produce gets damage when it is being transported to the market or buyers thus the farmers are getting less monies for their produce. With this scenario, I support the farmers 150% in their effort to bring their plight of bad farm roads to the government.

The farmers also pay taxes and have a legitimate expectation of good farm roads and should also benefit from the services provided by the government.

More groups in the country should take a leaf from the Salisbury Farmers and make their dissatisfaction know to the government.

More action than words is what is need now.

Nature Spice: “Here is my answer to that person:-
How can the farmers continue to produce when they (the farmers) cannot even go to their farms because of bad/poor farm roads conditions.”

Well, Nature Spice, here is some breaking news for you…while some farmers from the west coast choose to complain and whine about poor roads, the Haitians are using the same “poor roads” to produce and enrich themselves. Are you aware of this? In other words, while we play politics and choose to be lazy, foreigners are coming to Dominica to make the most of the very programmes and opportunities that exist.

In addition, does it not seem curious to you that although today feeder raods are in better conditions than they were 40 years ago, farmers today seem to complain and blame their low productivity on “poor” roads? Think about this!

Now, don’t hate me for educating you on this fact, look at the politicians who have fed you misinformation and look at the lazy farmers who choose to play security guard in Roseau and hate them.

Do you think that $1.50 can maintain n repair all the damages caused to the the real farmers’ vehicle from driving on that road. What you know about that? Instead of sitting behind you computer talking about what you don’t know, take a field trip to Carholme using the Salisbury access road and then and only then you can talk….. smh at Dominicans… Is ignorance like this that have all young people taking scholarship from the government to go study and never returning to that backwardness

All of these are things farmers of yesteryear did to get to their farms and to produce the Green Gold: Walk, hitchhike, vehicle pool, etc. Today, Haitians remind us of those years while some farmers politick, play lazy, and complain!

BTW, who sets that 1.50 price? Do the Haitians hold a gun to the farmers head to force them to accept that price? And, are you implying that those D/can farmers trasnporting Haitians should expect to rely on a fare from a few Haitian farmers to maintain their vehicles? I hope not.

The answer to productivity has always been one word: WORK! This truism has not changed since then; just asked the many successful farmers from the west coast and allover D/ca.

I beg to differ sir, if the farmers are to fix their own roads, then why are they paying taxes, licenses, and other fees. furthermore, when they fix the roads themselves, do they raise the price of their goods, to cover their expenses? or are you saying they should use their tax and licenses money to fix the roads and let the government find their own money to pay their salaries and allowances?

As I said earlier Peeping Tom. Take a drive on the Salisbury to Carholme access road and then come lets have a discussion. BTW this is the child of a Jean Bawi farmer, who has a farm in Carholme and yes I do go on the farm so I know what I am talking about……. What’s your experience or is your argument based on hear say or assumption.

What insanity! We are not here or the farmers are not talking about someone plant a few yams or bananas to sustain them self. The topic is about having proper roads so that the farmers can produce in sufficient quantities to reduce our food import bill and exporting to earn foreign currency.
I don’t know why persons like yourself feel the need to insult my and other people’s intelligence by advancing such silly ,simplistic and dishonest analysies of the solutions to Dominica’s problems, problems created in large measure by Roosevelt skerritt. It may serve your purpose in terms of fooling the less suspecting amongst us but you should realize that not all of us are as foolish or greedy as those skerritt supporters whom you pander to.

Perfect timing guys! I just wish farmers from all around the country would join you all because Skerrit needs to get it. By their own words this past week they agreed that agriculture which was our bread basket according to the agriculture minister, has been sacrificially murdered by this administration and turned our hard working farmers into patients at the Casualty Ward of the Red Clinic. So yes the timing is perfect as many of the returning Dominicans could feel the pain Dominicans have to endure under Skerrit.

all business that is establish in Dominica is having financially issues an thats best advice you givin the youth is to go and stat their business stupessss what if i want to work for 2 -3 ten further my education would it make sense to run a business for 2 years … and why should a young individual take a loan to finance a business when they could use it further their education remember we in a global world where an associate degree is little … and the jobs would grow the economy so stop being ridiculous the government is voted in to develop the country hence provide jobs

      • October 30, 2013

After graduating from college farming is the best job for the youth after spending two and more years in college I don’t think so and other thing about creating jobs for yourself what job can one create in a economy like Dominica people have no money to spent look around Roseau and see the amount of Dominican businesses that are closing down skeritt promise 500 job where are the jobs!

Where is the MP for Salisbury ? Why didn’t the farmers consult him ? Isn’t he their elected representative ?

Why do the people working and shopping in Roseau have to subject themselves to this madness ?

Take a page from Eddison James. When things in his constituency were needed, he called and met with the PM. Soon after things were in motion.

      October 30, 2013

“Where is the MP for Salisbury ?” – He is right there with them. If you listened to Q95, you would not ask this question.

“Why do the people working and shopping in Roseau have to subject themselves to this madness ?” – This is still a democracy. You should direct your question to Skerrit.

“When things in his constituency were needed, he (Edison James) called and met with the PM.” – Hector John did call the PM. The PM ignored him and the people of Salisbury.

Please get your facts straight before posting your comments.

Sometime we cannot wait to organize a movement we just have to get up and move and the news will flow to the masses
It’s a perfect time for everyone who can to go down and support the Farmers with the protest in the capital of Roasau, especially now that the GOVT is meeting with those from the diaspora.
They should feel the heat because some of them came down and VOTE the present GOVT in power so they should also be held responsible.
, it’s a perfect time for not only Farmers but for all who are involved in moving D’ICA Agricultural systems forward we should all be out there with these guys (farmers) give them our support.

You should be laughing at yourself. So Dominica is doing better than St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada. You kidding right. Well forget about the data and travel to the islands that we are ahead off and then come back and provide your own assessment.

So idiot… u are trying to say that barbados, trinidad and the bahamas are poorer than us…u need to take a class in economics… gdp per capita id nothing really… it is simply gdp divided by the total population.. we have the lowest gdp and a much much lower population dan everywhere… so obviously gdp per capita would be highet dan every where else….

        October 30, 2013

Are you telling me that Dominica is better off economically than St. Lucia and St. Vincent? Are you crazy? Do your homework again because you obviously have not done it correctly. Let me just give you a little snippet on one of St. Lucia’s and St. Vincent’s sectors; electricity production and consumption of which I am most familiar. In 2006 St. Lucia was consuming on average 40+ Megawatts of power and right now they are doing about 60. This is due to growth in hotels and other investments in the private sector which translates to more jobs and greater income. St Vincent’s consumption is also expanding because of major investments in the Grenadines. Domlec in Dominica however have been for years and is still struggling to move pass 20 Megawatts (no fault of theirs); why? It’s because there is no growth in our economy because of the lack of investments. In fact we are losing investments as with the recent closure of Brizee Mart and Clear Harbour.
