Young farmer establishes piggery in Bagatelle

Chrisroy Fontaine hopes to expand the business
Chrisroy Fontaine hopes to expand the business

More livestock farmers in community of Bagatelle are getting into the business of rearing pigs.

Four young farmers have gained Government’s support for their efforts to supply the growing needs for pork and its by-products in the area.

The new piggery is starting off modestly with the intention of expanding in the coming years.

Chrisroy Fontaine is one of the farmers.

“There’s really only one establishment like this in the entire south. We think it’s a good way to elevate ourselves. We’re starting off with 15 pigs and as time goes on, we will expand the business,” he said.

The young farmer added, “We got a lot of assistance from the Hon. Kenneth Darroux for funding. We are thankful for that daily. We’re putting it to good use.”

The Parliamentary Representative for the Petite Savanne Constituency which includes Bagatelle, Dr. Kenneth Darroux says, Government has invested up to $25,000 in the building and start-up stock.

Dr. Darroux says this will add to the ever-growing Pork Festival in Bagatelle.

“We know of the importance of pork to this area. The festival has really grown. A lot of time, however, when the festival comes around, the vendors will most times have to purchase the pork and products from outside Bagatelle.”

The piggery will complement the abattoir already established in the Layou Park area.

The young farmer says the piggery should be operational by the end of September.

Good luck to your endeavor of rearing pigs for Dominican’s consumption.
Yes! Keep it local. Someday I hope you will be able to export the meat.
Just think at Christmas, the smoked pork. This is mouth-watering.

Dominicans stop the negativity. Lets compliment and encourage young people when they are doing well. Too may time we bash and discourage young people. Because of too much negativity that why Dominica is in that condition. Lets be Positive and have a positive attitude to move our county forward.

Do “they” understand their plan for this abattoir… based on this scenario there are 3 simple yet pertinent questions. Where is the production base in terms of animal rearing to be concentrated and where is it presently? What is the overnight holding stock at the abattoir? What is the projected time interval for animal slaughter?
So this young farmer in BAGATELLE upon successful completion and based on the size of the enterprise (starting up with 15 animals!) will be expected to travel all the way to LAYOU PARK to slaughter… (how many miles) but more importantly STRESS on the animals. Now without an overnight holding facility slaughter will be done THE SAME DAY!!! I beg to be totally wrong on this, So then what kind of equipment does the abattoir CURRENTLY have in order to monitor animal vitals before slaughter (i.e stress induce hormonal changes etc caused by long travel – qual insur). Is there adequate transportation? Factor in farmers coming from CAPUCHIN, WESLEY for…

The state of the roads to get to the abattoir are appalling! Any animals traveling to be slaughtered are bound to be stressed if they do not die on the way?????

I like enterprise but explain to me why as a consumer, when I do my shopping I must subsidize a farmer who does not pay tax in the first place, no tax no matter how much profit he makes. Can anyone explain that to me logically without troubling my mind? I don’t like the idea that a government, any government would be buying votes at the expense of my pocket book to keep themselves in power.

Ma Moses…I could be wrong, but I believe we are all paying the piper considering we are subjected to VAT.

Green gold, I may be aged but not stupid. Of course, we all are paying vat and in that we are equal. You can all give me a thumb down but the fact is that farmers do not pay income tax. Already I am paying more for chicken if it is not back and neck. You see, the Govt. is preparing us for higher prices for locally produced meat, because it will cost more than imports. But I have news for them, I will keep buying my meat direct, unless they stop that too and force farmers to supply their abattoir only at intervention prices. Dominica becoming like Venezuela more and more every day and I don’t like it.

Butchers need to look into all the avenues of meat. Not just slabs of miscellaneous meats, but make sausages, hams, cured meats, etc. Be innovative and become the most aware butcher there is and definitely things will move forward.

It is much more profitable and healthy to plant/sell ganja (no law, no constitution etc.) Illegal?….”Go to hell” x3….than to rear swine….
Imagine, a so called doctor encouraging pork. More shame on Darroux  Bagatelle and Fond St.Jean were always associated with FISH. Educate yourselves

Pork is meat. Have you ever asked yourself why the world has pigs and why through the years most humans eat it? Surely, there must be a reason for it and the first commences with God who created it for us to eat.
The ham, if you eat it, where do you think it originated from?
If you have become a vegetarian, that is your business. Allow those of us who love pork, the privilege of rearing pigs, selling and consuming the meat.
Pork is healthy meat; unlike the illegal drug that you stated about. Health wise, you cannot go wrong eating pork but you can go wrong ingesting illegal drugs.

only the red can get help from the government. so while I am happy for them I am mad at the government because if they were for the people the headline would probably be 50 new livestock farmers from all around the country.
