Alick Athanaze equals fastest ODI half-century on his debut, setting world record

Alick Athanaze

Dominican cricketer Alick Athanaze, 24, who plays for the West Indies team, has equaled the Fastest ODI Half-Century on his debut, setting a world record.

This happened on the third match of the West Indies ODI series against the UAE where he hit 65 off 45 Balls. West Indies swept UAE 3-0 in Sharjah.

He made his List A debut for the West Indies Under-19s in the 2016–17 Regional Super50 on January 25, 2017.

In November 2017, he was named to the West Indies squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.  Following the West Indies’ matches in the tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Athanaze as the rising star of the squad.

He became the second batsman for the West Indies to score two centuries in one tournament, and finished as the competition’s leading run-scorer, with 418 runs.

In June 2018, he was named to the Cricket West Indies B Team squad for the inaugural edition of the Global T20 Canada tournament.

He made his first-class debut for the Windward Islands in the 2018–19 Regional Four-Day Competition on December 6, 2018.

In October 2019, he was named in the Windward Islands’ squad for the 2019–20 Regional Super50 tournament.

He was the leading run scorer in the 2022–23 West Indies Championship, scoring 647 runs in 10 innings.

Nice vibes my brother! Keep yourself humble; you will have few regrets.

Sad that good news is lacking comments; says a lot.

Clearly the best west Indian batsman in the Caribbean bar none.if Alick was a bajan he would have been the captain of the west indies ,so the quicker they realise and make him captain the quicker west indies will dominate world 🌎 cricket 🏏 again. I know this will not happen so west indies can play 11 bajan and loose every match.

Congratulations on your achievement my fellow Dominican and I wish you continued success.

However, I hope the coach, Mr. Sammy foremost, his team mates, and all in his tight circule has and will point out the importance of playing good standard regulation cricket and within this very promising youngster’s own personal style and skill. I say this on the backdrop of the way he got out which to my mind (I’m not a cricketer myself) was an unnecessary shot. Although a none cricketer myself, merely an avid West Indies supporter, I felt his shot selection, which got him out, was a poor an immature judgement on his part.

My comment is not with an intent to condemn the you man, but in a hope that he will be encouraged to maintain a level, mature mind throughout his career. His altimate focus and objective must always be to make the most runs he possibly can and to place him team in a winning position. Style, fashion and flamboyance ought not to be foremost in his thoughts.

He should only play that shot when he has mastered it…He hasnt!!! He is tired of throwing away his innings time and time again with the same shot. He better learn dam fast, because he is not from Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana or Trinidad.
      He threw away a hundred!

Dominica! Dominica! Dominica! – Reminds me of what I read about the primitive age of civilization.

If things continue the way they are at present concerning the police, DPP and the court, Vigilante Justice will become the preferred method of settling grievances and disputes..

Dominica lacks visionary LEADERSHIP. Where there is no vision the people perish.

@Sonia Barton – Your question made me chuckle slightly. Out of curiosity, are you a new follower to international cricket and/or West Indies cricket and how it works?

Well done batsman Alick Athanaze on his debut innings. His innings included some clean breathtaking eye-pleasing shots.

Alick is unstoppable! But selectors have been tirelessly trying. He struck a massive blow when he put on that awesome batting clinic today. Oh, we’re all bursting with pride! Viva Grandbay!

Alice, is not that same reverse sweep that tripped you up on your previous innings against Bangladesh A? If I can see that, far less opponents who do that for a living. That shot not ready for prime time. I’m a bit upset with you Alick. You deserved not only the century, but to seize that record all to yourself! Hallelujah anyhow! West Indian cricket fans everywhere are in one voice! Carlos Braithwaite said it all: you are ‘the future of West Indies cricket!”

Athanaze was manhandling the UAE bowlers until he tried an ill-advised low percentage, risky reverse sweep shot.

That faux pas aside, the sky is the limit for this up and coming classy batsman who lit up the scoreboard in a hurry.

Just say it as it is brother. The young man needs to stop playing that stupid reverse sweep…It does not mean that you hate him. It means that you love him more than those who can’t say so!!
He better do so fast, and be a quick learner, if he wants to go places in the sport.

That’s the type of comment i like to read. Unless he learns fast, he won’t get far. That’s a fact!! We have to be frank to the young man and ourselves. He has to stop throwing away his wicket time and time again with a stupid shot he has not mastered!!! Otherwise he won’t get far!!!
We have to stop the flattery and constructively criticise the young man. Maybe that’s how he’ll learn, because we all love him.

If you are from South City, and you want the young man to go places, please advice him to stop playing the reverse sweep shot. He is hard headed!!! Hard headedness has no place in competitive sports. When you say that to him, it means that you love him more than those who know it, but keep it to themselves.
He better learn dam fast, because he uselessly threw away a HUNDRED!!!

Congratulations to the young man, Alick Athanaze. This is welcomed news for Dominicans as the citizens are bombarded with negativity everyday.

Hope your next outing would be triple digits when you go out to bat. All the best in your future games.

Keep your politics out of it and learn to bat and bowl. Is anything bothering you, old man?

Well done young man…Keep a cool head. Kind of disappointed that you got out playing that same shot that has led to your demise so many times. PLEASE leave that shot alone, you have not mastered it!!! Listen only to those who will help you to excel…Heard a caller on a radio programme today saying that everyone should dismiss those who thought Athanaze should score 100 today…That’s the kind of bad advice the young man should disdainfully reject!! Masterful batsmen are largely defined by the number of centuries scored, not 50’s…B C Lara, IVA Richards, Tendulkar, Javed Miandad, etc..
Centuries after centuries should be your aspiration young man!!!
    Well done!
