Another contract signed, this time, for a $9 million dollar Hillsborough bridge

Dr. Adis King, parliamentary representative for the St. Joseph constituency

The government of Dominica continues its series of consultations and contract signings across the island.

Two days after the signing of a contract for a bridge at Dublanc,  the government, on Wednesday, signed a $9 million contract for the design and construction of the Hillsborough Bridge in Layou  with Offshore Civil & Marine Inc.

The easternmost of the two bridges at Hillsborough was severely damaged during Hurricane Maria which resulted in the use of only the western bridge for traffic in both directions.

“This project is therefore welcomed wholeheartedly since it will impact quite a huge section of our people,” Dr. Adis King, the parliamentary representative for the area, said while delivering remarks at the ceremony.

She continued, “This has not only created the level of inconvenience for those of us who use this route several times a day, but it has also led to chaotic activities at times.”

Dr. King said the bridge is one of the main bridges connecting the northern and the southern communities of the island with thousands of commuters using it on a daily basis.

She said that is happening at a time when most economies of the world are collapsing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Quite a number of talented people in Layou and St Joseph area will get an opportunity for employment during the implementation of this project,” the MP noted.

Dr. King also indicated that in July 2021, the government will also begin work on the rehabilitation of the Layou Valley Road from the Hillsborough Bridge to the Yorke Valley Bridge.

Minister for Public Works and the Digital Economy, Senator Cassanni Laville, who also spoke at the function,  said this project is in keeping with the government’s policy to make resilient infrastructure part of its thrust to build back a dynamic Dominica.

“We will continue to build bridges, walls, road maintenance…,” the minister stated.

The construction of the Layou Bridge is expected to be completed within 8 months.

People, remember this bridge went down 6 years ago, BEFORE hurricane Maria. Only NOW! they see it need some sort of fixing. But 9 million dollars? 9 million dollars. That is they new laundry? Bridges? They realize the houses not being filled anymore so now is bridge. Each one is 2 million and up. The bailey type bridge they put in bagatelle they say is 2.3 million dollars, meanwhile the wall around the PM farm have more concrete and steel in it than what they do in bagatelle. Over price every project, and hold the change for themself. What is in Layou will NOT cost 9 million dollars.

When governments are undertaking work, in order to ensure that the processes are fair and not simply a gift to supporters, transparency is important. For example, we are told that contracts are being signed for important work. However, were the contracts put out for public tender, where all qualified parties are given the opportunity to bid for the work?

It is said that headline stories that gain national attention have but two or three days shelf life. DNO, I’m urging you to change this being the most popular local news site.

Why not create a weekly article dubbed “LEST WE FORGET” or some similar heading. Under this heading some of the most pressing or significant unresolved stories/events will be resuscitated until there is some sort of resolution.

Examples – Sherwin Prosper’s death in police custody, the 1.2 missing billion from the CBI program, the bogus charges against Mr. Linton where he has to attend court this coming June for the umpteenth time, the public library which is in ruins, etcetera.

What do you think DNO? Anticipating your response.

A better title for the suggestion above is Let’s Not Forget.

Nothing much is happening in Dominica but the construction of million dollar concrete monstrosities and the restoration of some roads and bridges. Do you know why?

The no bid contracts handed to foreign contractors by any government reek with corruption. This method is where most corruption in government takes place. This is precisely what is happening in Dominica.

Any country where CORRUPTION is rampant can be easily detected. The masses of the population live below the poverty line; wages are unlivable; infrastructure is inadequate; the gap between the living standard of the few elites (politicians and their cronies) and the rest of the population is enormously wide.

At present in Dominica, homelessness and vagrancy are at an all time high; unemployment is higher than ever before; the once thriving Middle Class has been totally eviscerated; public servants live from paycheck to paycheck. These are the objective truth.

    It’s a fact. Dominica is a FAILED STATE!…

IBO FRANCE, get a life and be at peace with God. Nothing the government does is of any value to you. Well Sir, Lennox Linton will never be PM of Dominica, not in this life, not in the next one. When will you have anything good to say? You are so frustrated with yourself, don’t know what next.

Let me dedicate a well known hymn to those doctors that chose to inflict pain instead of soothing pain, those educators that chose to brainwash the poor instead of educating them, those police officers that chose to teach lawlessness instead of law abiding citizens and those so called Christians who are pastor’s wives, who chose to be members of an evil gansted instead of light shinning in darmness, just because they are all greedy for filthy lucre according to 1 Timothy 3:3-8

    ” I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
    I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands.
I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand.”

So many contracts being signed. Great!
But why can’t the Roseau river walls be completed?
    Contracts were signed years ago.
Completion of the Roseau river walls should be a top priority since contracts were signed, and money allocated.

They do not care, however they can hide and pocket money is their concern. They do not want to teach you how to fish so you will always come back. Roads being built without gitters or sidewalks. Bdridges over priced, They cannot even create a proper industrial site for all agro procesors to properly produce, they didnt even plant cash crops in mass after maria to ensure food security and supply to agro processors, they do not improve any sporting facilities around the island except windsor park in the last few months yet to finish and bleachers propped up by pallet and loose wood. Thes peple just have no class or decency. They have no sense of order. Country just untidy and unruly. Money wasting on treating and bribery no economic stimulation, people brokes, everything is ghetto mentality, youth have no respect for elders and vice versa, Politicians and public officers sleeping with known criminals (literally and figurtively). But go ahead buold the bridge. Kelver couldnt do it.

      April 25, 2021

Oh, plenty happening in Dominica but not all of it is good. People are still poor and hungry and some living under tarpaulin almost four years after hurricane Maria. That’s why we must shout about the few good things because there is so little of it.

Only a brainless diehard cannot conceive that this method of building apartments, roads, bridges and health centers is the easiest way for politicians in power to rob the finances of government.

My concern is, i live in an economy where about 95% of the citizens are hollering for help. People can hardly have 2 meals per day, begging is rampant, unemployment is super high, purchasing power is almost zero…..but Dominica has a SECOND ECONOMY where about 5% of the population can live in opulence, there are millions of $$$$$$, even billions to build buildings towering to the sky, bridges, hospitals, health centers, etc..
I hope the day will come when some people will be JAILED for their reckless stewardship of this country.
You all will never fool me!!!Something is wrong.
No agriculture, no tourism, no manufacturing, very little tax revenue.
Where the hell is that money stored, and why cant the entire population get a slice, in those hard economic times!!!
EC$64 000.00 is good just for the liar in chief????
