Another man sent to jail in ‘Codfish fiasco’

Another culprit has been discovered and punished in the ‘codfish fiasco,’ which has grabbed the attention of Dominicans at home and abroad.

Hilarian Luke Cuffy will spend over six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to trespassing and removal of waste from the Fond Cole landfill although he claimed he knew nothing about the entire matter.

Last week, Steve Pond, was given a six-month prison sentence for the removal of waste from the facility.

Reports also indicate that Cuffy was among those who sold the contaminated codfish which was removed from the landfill.

He told the court that he has been working at the landfill for over 12 years but on the day the codfish was removed, he was not at work and he knew nothing about it.

“I am guilty,” he nonetheless insisted, although he was told a ‘not guilty’ plea would be entered on his behalf.

It also appeared that Cuffy had another surprise up his sleeve. “The big boys take things…..I have list of names of those who took codfish,” he told the court.

Then the matter took another turn when Police Prosecutor, Claude Weekes, informed the court that information from the management of the landfill indicates that Cuffy did not actually work there as he claimed.

He was jailed for six months for removal of solid waste and six weeks for trespassing.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

These people should have known better. They had no concern for the health of Dominicans.
Going to a garbage landfill, taking contaminated codfish and selling it? It is shocking and scandalous that they would do such a thing. What a disgrace. They are not afraid that it could infect and kill everyone who ate it? The Law should deal with them accordingly as they deserve. May this never recur in the future. The area should be cordoned off so that only few authorized employees have access to it.

Culprits have been discovered and not punished in the ‘Bin & fertilizer fiascos,’ which has grabbed the attention of Dominicans at home and abroad.

Top officials of the current regime will not spend any months nor years in prison after they could not escape being guilty to cheatin the public and selling of bins and fertilizer from a seller from the misty woods of Pennsylvania Cole although they claimed the bins were the wrong size and I guess the fertilizer the wrong strenght while others said they knew nothing about the entire matter.
They continue to slide into larger bobols.

Over two thousand people bought the saltfish, directly or indirectly. Adults and school children included. The jail could never have space for them. If you cant punish all, punish none.

Dominicas wealth is in the pockets of a few thieves, who are keeping the majority poor….People who get involved in these things like the landfill business, need help. They are Dominicans too. Stop all you crap about jail. HYPOCRITES! The real crooks and criminals all you have them on a pedestal.Help the man to reform and let him help to feed himself. Many of you commenting on how he should be jailed, merit the jail more than him.

You are the one who is sounding like a hyprocrite. This is pure greed and not a matter of poverty. Why didn’t he keep it for himself and have a years’ supply of codfish instead of selling it to the shopkeeper.

On another note I am not hearing anything about that shopkeeper.

Would like to find out from the authorities why aren’t they charging the shop keepers who bought this product, knowing full well that the persons were not authorized sales men or worked for a particular company.

They too have a major role to play in this incident and should be taught a lesson

from my understanding these people are being sent to jail for ‘removal of waste from the land field..’ i think that management of the land field need to be revisited as i believe it is the managers responsibility to ensure that these things do not happen.

thing should be done the right way and we need to first place blame on those paid to manage/secure the land fields.

Around the world in every civilized country it is anathema to admit adult surgical cases to neo-natal(maternity) wards. Yet in Dominica when ministers of government are sic with any type of disease they are are allowed to be housed in the pristine maternity section, this wanton desecration, exposes the ward to contamination and place the newly born infants at morbid risk. Yet Many people here, with their hypocritical double standard, chose to ignore this gross offense. They prefer simple cases where poor people commit opportunistic infractions (out of social desperation), then they all jump and howl for blood.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander. The ministers need to stop using the maternity ward and al those who are involved in this dastardly practice need to face similar punishment to the ‘codfish’ culprits, since they are carelessly exposing the newly born innocents to illness and death.

Why do most of us degrade our name and what we stand for as a county. People within our tourism sector are not pleased to hear that. We Dominicans selling and stealing these waste foods for each other.
Remember we are all Dominicans so we must stand up and stop this foolishness. I am only 19. Aren’t the older people supposed to advise me???

    January 22, 2013

This is not entirely about Dominica and the state of things down here; its all about man and his greed, the ones who sold the items and those who bought it. I remember seeing a TV documentary where restaurants in the USA were knowingly buying vegetables retrieved from dumpsters and selling the items to unsuspecting patrons!! And this was all for the sake of “saving” money.

Proper disposal of solid waste is needed in Dominica. The primitive and dangerous practice of landfill is awaiting a health catastrophe.Landfill harbours rodents and germs are able to float across wide areas during windy condition.the fumes also pose a health hazard. We need modern incinerator plants to ensure that solid waste can be disposed in a safe manner. There will be crew 24/7 for operation and security.

    • lcm
      January 22, 2013

Incinerators cost more money to operate and generate more fumes than landfills because of the simple fact that you are burning materials some of wish are potentially deadly. Now you have to think of wind and location and where you gonna place an incinerator. Bottom line is waste disposal is and will always be a challenge. If we want to think green we should recycle as much as possible. If the geothermal plant becomes a reality here’s a great opportunity to recycle cause we have cheap source of electricity.
landfills mainly give off methane gas which by the way Canberra harnessed for good use. Either way effective management and education is key to proper disposal and safeguard of waste

      January 22, 2013

Excuse you! Maybe you have, since you said “we”. Most Dominicans are particular about what they eat and from where. Those thieves and who stole from the landfill and those “sooteewair” who bought from them are the failures. That business of 6 months jail is a waste of time. They have put the lives of themselves and others in jeopardy and as such they should receive steeper penalties.

      • ....................
        January 22, 2013

@ Attitude…What do you expect those who are hungry to do? Going to the landfill to do these things will continue, since the people are getting poorer. Reality hitting us including you in our faces.

How can Dominica be a failed state because a few people decided to take codfish from the landfill and resell it? Haven’t you seen the show Dumpster Diving with even educated well balanced people going into dumspters and retrieving food? Even roadkill they feast on. Those in the wrong must be punished but it will not be the last time this happens sadly. Its not as if all of Dominica in dumpsters getting food.

I think when the person above referenced the buyers, I would hope he or she meant the shops/bar/etc who bought the codfish directly from the those who dug it up and re sold it. The 2 guys are not wholesalers so where did they get the codfish…the shop keepers/bar owners should be fined higher and imprisoned as well.
