Thieves have struck another village council, this time, in the eastern community of Good Hope, police have confirmed.

“There is a report of a burglary in the Good Hope area where over $7,000 belonging to the village council office (was stolen),” Police PRO, Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes, said.

Police say they believe the robbery took place between December 26 and 27, 2014.

This is the second reported village council robbery in less than two weeks.

On December 19th 2014, thieves robbed the Morne Jaune Village council of $20,000. The two, Cliftus Valmond 24 and McPherson Thomas 18 of the same area, have now been formally charged with robbery and are on remand at the State’s prison.

According to reports, that money was allocated for “Pauper’s Allowance” (Government Public Assistance Programme) and was to be distributed to the recipients in the south east of the island.

Weeks said no one has been formally charged with the Good Hope robbery, and he is sending out an appeal to the community to collaborate with the police.

“Good Hope is a small community and we trust the people, as has already been done, to work with the police with a view to realizing a successful outcome.”

The Police PRO is calling on the local authorities to “look at or revisit strategies,” for the safekeeping of funds whether it is large or small.

He said investigations are ongoing.

These thieves are looking for big money. It is a shame that they do not have a conscience, stealing money from the poor.
You guys are possessed by the devil. You should consider this. Having committed this crime what will happen to you as you age and when you die?
The government will have to find a way of providing financial help for the poor. Money left in an office should be in a secured vault and under constant security guard watch.

what we need to do , is to find common ground and to take our stand together regardless of political persuasion stand against the common enemy which is crime , corruption and other ills which can cause decay in the fabric of the nation as the good book says Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Let us all stand against the wrong regardless of who does it.

What ever happened to Bank accounts and cheques? Since when did Village Councils started having so much cash in hand? Why not let the Dominica Social Security administer these welfare funds? No transparency, no accountability, but we like it so! Easy come easy go!

Don’t give a darm. In fact I say to thieves go on take the money and run. It is to much hypocrisy to imply that only these incidents are worthy of invoking and high lighting the plight of poor people. As far as I am concerned the thieves did not steal from the paupers- they took money from the treasury and I am ok with that. My rationale is why some can rob the treasury in bold face and others cant. The bin Bobol, land tax fruads, fertilizer bobol, passport scandals are all high day rubbery yet I must condemn a few thieves who stole $7000 and $20000. Well the garbage bin fraud was above $500000,passports scheme there are hu dress of millions missing. Just think how much these stolen money could do for the paupers and the young people who are riding an insincere NEP program.

No justice no peace covers much more than the idea of street demonstrations etc. BwakaYing the government hand out at this point is fair play based on the grave injustice that the people of Dominica have endured

You have committed grave crimes/sins by encouraging theft and having no compassion for the poor people this money was meant for.
Some of you have such wild and evil imaginings that there is no peace and what D/cans have endured. :?: You should be residing behind the iron curtain, somewhere as North Korea, Iraq, Syria, Iran and the likes. Then you would have something to gripe about.
You lack appreciation and gratitude. One day you will suffer for that which is also called idle words. It could be the work of nature. Stay alert for 2015.

The difference between you and me is that I don’t come with hypocrisy. Peop it is.le like you hang in Canada professing to be Christ like whereas your heart is filled with evil and you condone criminal behavior. You put ethics and good principles aside to defend corruption and criminal behavior among politicians. As for me I come with consistency. I won’t congregate with pretending pokwit suckered like you. Lang Mama won’t profess to be pius nor holy . I call it for what it is. I don’t sugar coat nor brown up my nose.

There are some comments which human beings should never make. You are too free with your tongue/fingers. Surely, you cannot expect others, sensible, law-abiding people to be pleased with such comments and laugh at them?
When some of us read them, we ask ourselves, what type of person would make them, to inform the thieves to take the money. It all depends on your mentality. No one should water-down words but they should speak/write words which will not encourage others to keep stealing.
You consistently repeat yourself. Is that the type of patriotic person you are and always speaking ill of and blaming the government? If I were your relatives/friends, I would find you boring, consistently negative and uninteresting. What can anyone learn from you and your comments which do not enhance D/ca?
I am no hypocrite. My nurturing, education, experience and maturity will never allow me to make such comments.
The election is over for 5 more years. Put a lid on your criticisms.

What is the big deal about these robbery while Thomson has to go to court to claim what was stolen from him. A thief is a thief. These young people are practicing what they were taught by the powers that be. Why bother arrest them. To think that this is news makes me puke.

You speak like a fool. What was stolen from Thompson??? Who taught no one to steal? Who taught you to say what you want without facts. When someone will probably sue for saying what you do not know or have tangible facts (real facts) then you will blame someone for your short coming? Who will you say taught you? I guess you will say the “Powers that be”

    • The Facts
      December 30, 2014

Making excuses again? Who will exonerate them from stealing? When they stand solo before God for their judgment, they will find out, too late, it does not pay to emulate anyone and to steal from the poor. As adults, they are responsible for themselves and their souls. By this they will be judged.

        December 30, 2014

As always people as Grell repeat what they hear which they have no proof of.
I think the D/can government as the PM is lenient with them and their defamatory words. I heard on the Toronto News that a man somewhere in the US was charged for calling a government official corrupt. They do not joke in those countries. It is high time the PM and Weeks do something about it. People as Grell are too free with their words. It is time to clamp them down. Their comments are also boring and not educating. Who is really taking note of them which are like repeated broken records?
I would never consider or dare calling the Canadian/Ontario government corrupt through the Media and on the Internet. Those who do will be liable to be charged and will have to prove it in Court.
These D/cans must cease their defamatory words. It is time for them to exercise some respect. Furthermore, the Lord is taking note of their evil words as imbedded in their heart which they will pay for sooner or later.

“The Facts”: “The Dominica PM is too lenient with them and their defamatory words. It is high time the PM and Weeks do something about it.”

Just last month the PM was making all kinds of degrading and defamatory statements on campaign platforms that have gone viral internationally and now you’re saying he should stop someone from making statements you feel are defamatory. After all the defamatory and degrading statements/words you “The Facts” has said on this very website about Mr Linton?

Are you seriously comparing the Canadian government to the Dominica Government? The Dominica PM told the Dominican population “Go to hell, Go to hell, it’s none of your damn business where he get his money” money which is supposed to be the nation’s. He also said “no law, no constitution can keep him from becoming PM” et al… And you think that anyone should have any kind of respect for him after this and all the other crap he has done?

      • Anonymous
        January 1, 2015

Also you seriously need to stop comparing Dominica to Canada. The PM of Canada does not disrespect his populace. He does not/cannot disrespect the laws and constitution of Canada, he doesn’t have lawyers and judges in his back pocket like Skerritt because he could never get away with crap like that. So what reason could you possible have to call the PM of Canada corrupt or otherwise in the media/internet that would get you arrested and charged unless you are somehow threatening him. No one is threatening the PM of Dominica.

this is sad but not unpredictable. We must all recognize that DA is not the same country we knew 20 years ago, and lawlessness is on the upswing. We cannot be naive in tis respect. Security and situational awareness must be carefully thought of when transporting, storing or transacting depositing large funds of any sort, be it personal, business or government. I hope the police can make some recoveries but going forward things must change.

      December 30, 2014

It’s not just about the theft of money. These people steal anything they want from anybody. It all goes back to how they were brought up and many were not brought up at all properly. They were raised by people who should not have been parents to begin with and left to fend for themselves. And this is the outcome in a country with no future, no work ethic and no jobs.

Are you that incapable of making an informed argument? Is this what Dominica is full of – ignorant people such as yourself, though I doubt you live on island. Every country on Planet Earth has unemployment. Dominica is not alone in this and does not lead the pack, not nearly. Could government and the private sector do more to create employment in the country? Absolutely! But to say there is no work in the country is purely ignorant, even savagery. For how do Dominicans pay rent, build homes, buy cell phones and top ups, drive, party like tomorrow will not ever arrive, travel abroad on vacation, etc, etc.? Hope you get the point,; though I cyan count on that. Give your country a chance. Stop constantly wishing it ill.

I think the time has come for us to start issuing debit cards to the persons on the paupers list and credit the amounts to their accounts like is done in other countries. In this day and age no council should be still having cash around like that to make these payments

    • anonymous2
      December 30, 2014

That the government has to support so many poor people while the politicians abscond with thousands speaks volumes about the path that DA is on.

    • Pedro
      December 30, 2014

Sounds like a good efficient innovation but considering who is being served it simply won’t work. To be practical the debit card system will not work for the people being targeted, without revolutionizing how business is conducted in all of Dominica. Where are the atms in the villages? There are none. Village shops don’t deal with debit cards either. Get real Derrick!

While I agree they should modernize the way they handle money, I would not hold my breath on that one. I was in Dominica last month and visited a couple of government departments and they were still doing things the same way as they had been doing before I left DA 35 years ago.

I don’t remember the last time I saw carbon paper being used where I Noe live. In DA those receipt books and carbon paper are alive and well in government departments.
