Antigua: Father and son left dead following Carnival Tuesday shooting

Deceased father, Kergus Martin

A family in neighboring Antigua and Barbuda is currently grieving the tragic loss of both a father and son due to gun violence on Carnival Tuesday.

Malachi Martin passed away from his injuries at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, today, just one week after his father was fatally shot near the East Bus Station on Carnival Tuesday.

18-year-old Malachi became the most recent victim to die from gunshot wounds inflicted by an unidentified assailant who fired multiple shots at a group of individuals gathered under a tent near the East Bus Station during the Carnival festivities.

Authorities have interviewed several witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation, but no charges have been filed thus far.

Malachi was pronounced dead at 1:01 a.m. on Wednesday, having sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest.

He was among four individuals injured in the shooting on August 7. His passing follows the death of his father, 43-year-old Kergus Martin from Liberta, who was declared dead on the night of the incident.

Kergus Martin was one of two suspects in police investigations of the murder of two Dominicans in Antigua, in 2013. He had escaped custody but later turned himself in.

Additionally, a 29-year-old man named Wayne Knowles remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Law enforcement in St Johns continues to search for the individual responsible for the fatal shootings of both father and son, which occurred last Tuesday around 11 p.m.

The assailant is described as wearing dark-coloured clothing and a mask.
