Residents in Antigua and Barbuda plunged into mourning yesterday after National Cyclist Andre Simon passed away in a medical facility in Texas.
According to reports, he died after fighting for his life for over a year.
Simon was one of four men knocked down by a motorist on Sir George Walter Highway on May 8, 2022.
The other three riders were Sean Weathered, Ghere Coates, and Tiziano Rosignoli. They were injured but only with minor cuts and bruises. Simon, however, received the brunt of the hit.
He suffered from serious head injuries and had to be airlifted to the US for further treatment in July.
The entire country had banded together to provide financial support to him in the hope that he would recover.
Simon was reportedly struck down by Kenyatta Benjamin of Hatton who is charged with dangerous driving.
He has been in and out of court for several months for his committal hearing but now that Simon has passed, the charge may be upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving.
