Bobb says Calypso Day on the agenda again this year; urges support for art form

Daryl Bobb

Executive member of the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) Daryl Bobb has called on the public to embrace Calypso music.

His call came while addressing a press conference held recently.

According to him, the DCA hosted the largest, most patronized, and memorable event for the Carnival season, the Calypso Finals.

“At the DCA our work will continue and it will include staging another big event which started about two years ago called Calypso Day where focus is placed on education and climax with a big show,” he said. “So, look out for Calypso Day, it was very successful last year where we brought in the Mighty Gabby from Barbados and he really impacted the minds of our people as to the importance of Calypso to us.”

He continued “That is why we should embrace calypso. We should not fight down calypso.”

Bobb added, “We are a Calypso people. It doesn’t matter your religion; it doesn’t matter where you are from…”

Furthermore, he pointed out that Calypso is not just for young people, Calypso is for everyone who wants to be part of their culture, their economic development, they want to learn and they want to be part of the process of getting that to happen.”

He expressed his opinion that, unfortunately, Calypso does not promote the nudity, and crass lyrics, that young folks are drawn to.

Bobb urged all to support calypso events, “and our calypsonians when you hear calypso events are occurring go and check it out, make a contribution.”

“Stop [King] Dice on the road sometimes and put something in his pocket because our economy cannot pay this man what he really deserves from all these years of success and representation of our brand,” he advised.

Meanwhile, Bobb called for an extension of the Carnival season next year to avoid the cluster of events, too many of which are occurring on the same date, “as it is only common sense that our economy cannot sustain what they seem to be trying to achieve.”

As long as you have an Art form that is polarized by Politics and dominated by people’s ego the art form will go nowhere, unfortunately that is the situation we see in Dominica with Calypso. Calling for the art form to be embraced by people is one thing, but it is not the solution nor is it the magic bullet. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got, is this what you want people to embrace.

Isn’t it time to question what we mean by Dice success and what has he done for Dominica, see Thea LaFond waving the Dominica flag after winning her gold medal, making a statement quote, “Stop [King] Dice on the road sometimes and put something in his pocket because our economy cannot pay this man what he really deserves from all these years of success, ” wow, let us not forget the saying “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” I hope this is not just another Calypso day again.

Hey Bobb, just use this opportunity to ease into Bouyon and upgrade the Bouyon lyrically with political satire, masking, innuendo, gospel, mepuis, clean sex etc etc. I’ve heard Signal Band and I think you got a jump-start for free.

I do hope that the association review the judges list. And do a better job than recently. Even if we have to bring judges from other Caribbean countries. But until then I am not willing to spend money to come to Dominica buy an expensive ticket to go to calypso show when someone on the street can tell the result of the show before the show.
